So somebody broke into our apartment building last night, raped my car along with another guy's then proceeded to open another tenant's mail.
We've got the douchebag on surveillance and hope to get the evidence to the police soon. What's scary is the guy has pretty much open access to everything in the building at this point. He looked like he knew what he was doing too and I'm concerned that he'll be back and possibly break into a unit. Short of locking myself out of my apartment along with the rest of the world, I'm not sure how I can protect my shit. (a dog would be phenomenal, but we can't have them here and I don't think a cat will dissuade a burglar)

I don't think thats the right thing to do.
Stay in your apartment, put a wedge in your doors and locks on your windows at night, and let the police take care of everything. Don't worry, he's on video, so he'll probably get caught.
Just sit tight and be extra alert.

I would advise keeping a nice metal bat close by at all times. There are also these cheap alarms at places like home depot and lowe's that work quite well. You attach one unit on the wall next to a door, and then you put the other unit on the door, as close as possible to the other unit, and when the magnetic line between the two breaks it emits a very loud screech.
Biggest concern is protecting my stuff while I'm out and can't watch it. I should have photos of him in the next week. Is it legal to post the pics of him in the neighborhood, talk with local shop owners to see if they recognize him? For whatever reason, I've got a feeling he lives in the area. I'll work with the police, but they don't seem to really care.
Yeah, thats completely legal. Ask around all you want, just make sure to not knock on his front door when you out where he lives.
