so, i've started waking up at 8am every day for class - this is the earliest i've woken up in something like 6 years, so i'm obviously having a little bit of a tough time adjusting

for the past three days i was drinking some instant coffee, and the caffeine was really helping me out. however, it had an unfortunate side effect on me - i would get awful stomach cramps and pain (often resulting in needing the immediate use of the bathroom while in class), or now, it's progressed to the point where if i drink coffee i have stomach pains for 10+ hours after having drank it.

the last two quarters i drank tea, and i love tea, but i just don't think it has the kick i need. is there anything else stronger in the same vein as those two things, that i can substitute in for the coffee that i so desire? i don't feel like having terrible stomach pains any more.

You can try Yerba Mate. It has a somewhat similar chemical compound to caffiene so it may or may not cause your stomach cramps.

Also, try popping some vitamin b once a day.

You could always try making stronger tea—start with something heavy and black, and use twice as much tea leaf as you ordinarily would (or two tea bags if you use those). What I wouldn't recommend is steeping the tea for any longer than usual; it'll get bitter and all the caffeine leaches out in the first minute anyway.

I'm in with the Monster energy drinks. Green being the fave, but they make a ton of them now. Some are brutal, some are very very smooth (in terms of the tum-tum). Drink 'em slow or you'll be racing around like a pisshorse, but they have all the kick you need and then some.

I have an Irish Breakfast Tea that is pretty strong - I wouldn't put it quite up there with coffee, but it's at least a bit more potent than some of the other teas I've tried.

Just curious - were you drinking instant coffee every time you had the stomach pains? If so, you may want to try real coffee and see if it has the same effect.

It's weird that coffee would give you stomach pains like that. I'm worried that it's not just coffee itself, but something about the rest of your diet, or the timing of the day, or how you have your coffee, that may filter into other alternatives.

Arguably if you just want a boost of caffeine, get caffeine pills. Split them in half and have one in the morning.

Caffeine will make you jumpy and potentially give you headaches or stomach aches if you're consuming it on an empty stomach. I can't have a cup in the morning unless I've had some form of breakfast, even if it's just taking a baggy of cereal to work (I don't put milk in my cereal, just dry like a snack). I'm also lactose intolerant, so I only put a little heavy cream in my coffee (on weekends) or non-dairy creamer (weekdays), otherwise I too get stomach pains from the lactose.

Do you drink the coffee on an empty stomach? I find that when I do, I often get stomach pains...

This happens to me, too. It also happens when I drink it in the morning, even if it's when I'm eating.

You should also avoid starbucks coffee or similar brands because they over roast the beans to make them stronger and incidentally more acidic and irritable to stomaches. This works for them because they mostly make lattes and drinks with whipped cream which need a stronger brew to keep any kind of coffee flavor, but it will turn your gut if you drink it black (i learned this the hard way).

Unfortunately, western cultures frown upon arranged marriages, so the vast majority of people have to take risks in order to get into relationships.

As an unabashed coffee addict, I feel for you. I also second both the recommendation to grind one's own beans and the shout out for yerba mate.

Yerba mate is amazing. Strong as hell. Some find the taste objectionable, but I quite like it. There's an Argentinian steakhouse in San Francisco that I enjoy a lot, and there's nothing like a properly prepared mug after a big ass flank steak. But I digress. If you can't stand the stuff, try the recommendation of black coffee. If there's a decent hippy-ish market in your area, you should be able to find a chinese black tea called "Pu-ehr" which is quite strong and delicious to boot.

I drink a thermos of black coffee every morning, so I can't help out too much on the stomach front. However, you may want to spend a little more on a 1/2 of properly roasted mild breakfast coffee - as you most likely don't have a grinder, have them grind it in store. And seriously, avoid instant coffee if at all possible - it is coffee in name only.

thanks for all the suggestions guys - yeah, this only happens with instant coffee. it also pretty much only happens on a relatively empty stomach. i mean, i'll eat a bowl of cereal + coffee, but maybe it's not enough...

starbucks and other coffee places don't do anything like this to me.

right now i'm drinking an english breakfast blend (tea), and it really... doesn't have a kick at all, but it's still tasty. i'm going to try the suggestions of getting real coffee beans ground, and maybe eating a bowl of cereal, then drinking my coffee.

this yerba mate stuff sounds interesting too - is there anything you can compare its flavor to?

Well, a friend of mine compared it to "dirt, but in a good way." Take that for what you will. I think it definitely has an earthy character, but is also naturally sweet in a very nice way. Not much else like it actually.

I don't know Seattle well at all, but my intuition tells me there's a good chance you can find at least one cafe which serves it so you can give it a try. Fairly cheap in stores too.

Hot mate after a steak dinner??
    That actually sounds quite....sensual. :winky:

The ass steak part kind of turns me off, actually...

The caffeinated soap on ThinkGeek actually works. Got me through many a final exam.

I have a high tolerance for caffeine, and the stuff worked great

Aye, aye. And there's usually a bottle of good Malbec involved as well.

For anyone near San Francisco interested, the place is called El Raigon, in North Beach.

Anyway, to get back on topic, food before coffee is, when one has the time, generally a good idea. I personally avoid stuff like Monster and its ilk, but I can't stand all the artificial sweeteners they're packed with. Caffeine pills are generally a last resort for me, generally to stave off a headache when there's absolutely no coffee / tea available.

Really. It picks me up better than coffee, soda, or tea.

In the Seattle area at least tully's has a matte latte which I find really good, normally has a shot or two of vinnila in it too, very good.

Matte in general has a really kind of grassy taste, but I find it quite good. You can get just the tea style mix for it too, but I am not sure where to find it around, I would try it at tullys and I assume they have the straight drink too.

QFT. Also, per ounce, you're getting less caffeine from a Starbucks drink, and paying more than double for it compared to a regular cup of coffee. Basically you're paying $5-7 for a cup of steamed milk.

I personally stay away from any caffeine pills. I can drink coffee all day long but if I take one vivarin or something I get nauseous.

Try a different brand of coffee. When I drink the coffees from Trader Joes for more than three days in a row they do horrible things to my GI tract.
