The Guiding Principles and New Rules document is now in effect.
I turned on my PS3 today and saw that a new update had been released, and looking over the changes, it seems BD Profile 2.0 has been supported. This means Blu-ray LIVE discs can be played.
I looked a few pages back and didn't see anything on this, so I figured it was news worthy.
So that PS3... I hear it's a pretty good Blu-ray player...
I am tempted to get a PS3, what with MGS4 looming ever closer, and wouldn't mind getting a Bluray player.
Only thing is, I don't see myself playing many games on it. I can think of 3-4 games I'd get, and that's about it. I have alot of the good multi-system games on 360 already, so I am at an impasse.
Also DualShock 3 is now available in the US. They were due April 15th but I guess they got antsy and released them early. Amazon shipped mine to me today.
Oh. Well cool, but I suspect movie makers won't do too much worthwhile with it, a la the "change angle" button on DVD players. And it might be tough to teach the mass market that their new-fangled movie player can hook up with the intartubes.
Blu-ray live: Bringing to Blu-ray what HD-DVD had from the beginning.
Just keepin' it real there.
So what does BD Live do for you?
1. Network connection means rich content available online. On top of the 50GB of delightful, superfantastic, console war winning storage that you get with a blu-ray disc, you now have the entire INTERNETS at your disposal as a content provider. That means that the connected events, regular content updates and dead websites cause the movie came out five years ago are now available on BD!
2. 1GB of local storage! Yes, 1GB of your PS3 hard drive (or 1GB of on-board memory if you've chosen to buy a third party BD Profile 2.0 player) has now been set aside for the above content as well as for storing informaiton like video bookmarks. This also gives you the ability to stop and resume a BD at a later time.
3. Amazing, fantastic, super wonderful BD-J content! Yes, BD-J is finally ready for prime time. Much like HDi, BD-J is a programming language that's designed to bring rich applications to the BD player. Just think, you'll be able to play games on your PS3, thanks to Blu-ray!

I don't see what the big deal with this is. I got an imported one on eBay shipped for about the same price as an "US" released one and it is exactly the same. It has worked perfectly with all games I have played with it since I bought which was around 3 months ago, if not more.

I don't know how much I'll care about the features. I do know I'm happy that I don't have to even think about it because the ps3 gets updates like this.
edit - with any other player afaik, you can't update to 2.0 you'd need a new player.

Blu-Ray based DLC? Oh god, this is not going to end well. I wonder if this is going to cause any problems with Microsoft releasing a Blu-Ray drive for the 360? The HD-DVD drive had some of it's own storage space, but I don't recall how much.
HD-DVD already established microtransactions for HD formats with 300. You had the option of buying ringtones and cell wallpapers through a web interface that you navigated through your HD-DVD player.

...and nobody really knew or gave a shit about that, either.

Rich.
As for Blu-Ray, the first movie I'll buy will be Batman Begins when Warner release it in a couple of months.
