Gauntlet (DS)

US, April 4, 2008 - Gauntlet is a true arcade classic. Designed by Ed Logg for Atari Games, this Dungeons & Dragons inspired action game released in 1985 was one of the first four-player games that encouraged cooperative play to get through the hundred levels of underground mayhem. It was also one of the first games to pride itself on the idea that it was always meant to suck away players' money, one quarter at a time. Over the past two decades Gauntlet's been made into an arcade sequel and ported to classic consoles, and when Midway acquired Atari Games the company continued the line in spin-off sequels for the arcade and home systems. The latest incarnation comes from Eidos, who will publish a brand new design developed by Backbone Entertainment, this time for the Nintendo DS portable system.
The game, which will simply be titled Gauntlet, will feature the same cooperative action design that the original arcade game has been known for. Players take their pick from four different classes of characters, each with their own strengths, weaknesses, and in-game capabilities. They can hit the realms as the lone hero and try to advance through the 40 different maps, but there are 32 different enemy types out to make this trek as difficult as possible. The classic enemies like skeletons, thieves...and that annoying death guy will make a return, but many of the evil entourage will be completely original to the Nintendo DS game. Players will be able to utilize special abilities, like Bait that'll attract enemies away from the heroes, or Glacier Freeze which will halt enemies in their track.
But obviously Gauntlet has always excelled in its multiplayer, and the Nintendo DS will have a huge focus in this department. Four players be able to link up locally and hit the dungeons as their choice of character, but they won't be restricted to being next to each other: Gauntlet will fully support the Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection service. Go online and connect with three other friends to get the job done. And since Gauntlet has always been a social experience, Backbone has included voice over IP support. That's right, you'll be able to talk to your friends during the action using the built-in microphone or the optional DS headset.
The DS version will feature the usual cooperative single player campaign, but it will also feature an assortment of additional multiplayer modes: Deathmatch, Team Deathmatch, and Treasure Horde game modes. These modes will be playable locally or over the internet as well.
And if you've checked out the screenshots you'll notice that the Nintendo DS version will run both screens as a single display for a vertical view of the dungeon. The game will support a 3D engine running across both screens – hopefully Gauntlet's trademark "throw as many enemies on-screen as the view can fill" will be retained without any slowdown. Original orchestral music will accompany the action…and we hope the classic announcer will reveal when our character is about to die and when he or she will need food, badly.
Eidos will publish Gauntlet for the Nintendo DS this June for a retail price of $29.99.
Screens:
I wish I knew how many quarters my friends and I sunk into the original Gauntlet arcade game. Portable Gauntlet on my DS? Someone out there must love me. :winky:
Could this be the first DS game to do multiplayer so, so right?
PLEASE let this game be as good as it sounds like it could be. The problem with the original Gauntlet's gameplay is that it's far too repetitive for today's standards. Hopefully it'll be a bit more spruced up - which it sounds like it might be with things like spells and.. bait.

What? Obviously you haven't played Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles Ring of Fates.
More like Ring of Failure.
Fuck local wireless only. I don't have anyone to play with locally. If it's not legit wifi then it's fucking worthless.
Gauntlet will fully support the Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection service. Go online and connect with three other friends to get the job done.
That's how it's supposed to work.
That said, I used to love Gauntlet back in the day on the NES. I think it was one of those non-licensed NES games so it came on a strangely shaped cartridge if I remember correctly. Hope this game turns out to be fun~
The fact that this is rumored (or reported, at least) to have online multiplayer, with voice-chat in-game is a pretty enticing feature for something like this.
Could this be the first DS game to do multiplayer so, so right?
Pokeymans, fool.
Anyhow, it's been a long time since I've played a Gauntlet game since it seems like no one else likes them, but since this has online I just might buy it.
i spent so many hours playing gauntlet legends for the N64 and gamecube
the flashbacks, they are everywhere, halp
Oh god, yes
I played the SHIT out of Gauntlet Legends for the N64. Got all the way up to level 99, maxed out stats. I got Dark Legacy for the Gamecube, but it was kind of crappy in comparison. It didn't look much better, and the inventory system was a hideously broken unusable mess.
Gauntlet Legends was my personal favorite. In fact, I bought a Dreamcast just to play the most arcade perfect home version of the game.
So much time lost into that game. They could've built a quarter slot into the VMU (and some matter transportation tech to get the coins to themselves) and I still would've played the shit out of that game.
Heres hoping Gauntlet DS can reincarnate those days of 4 player bliss.
4-player online wifi with voice chat sounds impossible (for nintendo). Even if it's limited to only friend-coded friends, it would still be worth it. If the reviews are non-negative, a game-on thread would be imperative.
GSM on
We'll get back there someday.

Agreed.
This means I have until June to make my DS and my wireless router stop hating each other.
I only had the PS1 version of Legends...anyone else find the secret developer level where you go around their office and kill all the devs? Something like that...
Also I think it was bugged so that you could only ever get three of the secret characters, one of the bonus levels never unlocked anything for me. I had the Tigress and the Jackal and the Minotaur, and there was supposed to be another animal and the wizard who tells the story...
me and a friend were reminiscing about all the time we put into legends the other day (on 64). We never beat it though, never found all the ruins or whatever?

Oooh, looks like my buddy was lying to me. Seems that most DS online tunneling dried up after MKDS came out.
Unless you have to move using the touchscreen or some bullshit like that.
Probably not, considering the game is using both screens for the display. I'd imagine you're playing with the D-pad primarily.
I've tried looking into this but had no luck. What tunneling software did you use?
You can't. I was taking a friends word for it that you could, but it seems that no one bothered to finish it after MKDS came out.
Lying sack, I'll get him for this. He doesn't even own the game yet!
Promising.
Now, if only my DS didn't hate my router.
Oh, thanks for checking anyway. Would've been awesome if you could. :P
I'm lookin' forward to this....

That plus it's Gauntlet, so yeah.
But fuck that new one. Maaan, we only have been waiting years for a new gauntlet, and then it gets here and it is 4 hours long.

Elf shot the food!
Shots do not hurt other players... yet.
