small problem with my lips

edited April 2008 in Help / Advice Forum
the last week or so my lips have been incredibly dry, so much so that they are starting to crack.

i have pretty much doubled my intake of water to try and make this stop but it doesn't seem to work. anyone know why this is happening now and/or how to make it stop?

thanks

Is it really cold, are your lips chapped, or possibly like dried out by over exposure to the sun?

Have you tried just using chap stick or anything like that as opposed to just water?

Any other medical conditions currently? Runny nose for instance? Are you breathing from your mouth while you sleep? Any changes in diet recently? (feel like a general practitioner asking these questions).

Done anything to your lips lately that would cause irritation?

I have never really heard of anyones lips just drying up and cracking without something else causing it.

Get yourself some blistex and use it as often as necessary for a few days. That shit works wonders.

I have the same problem. Recently they have been really dry. I have tried sorbolene, which works somewhat.

^ This is very good advice. Blistex (especially the stuff that comes in the little pot) is dynamite for dry lips. I have this problem now and then for no apparent reason and this clears it right up pretty quickly. I've also had mine caused by some medications before. If you're currently taking any drugs check out the side effects.

If it doesn't clear up from regular applications of lip balm it could be you aren't getting enough vitamins.

Blistex is amazing - I used to have a bad case of dry lips. Not only did it fix me up in minutes but the actual recurrances of dry lips has decreased.

Pure vitamin E caps are cool if you don't like chapstick. I used to poke a little hole in the cap and squeeze the oil onto my lips.

Do avoid regular cheap chapstick. The 15 minute cycle you're talking about is pretty common, as it doesn't do much to heal or help your lips, it just suppresses the symptoms for a little while. All natural lipstick (that does not contain any petroleum or petrochemicals like Burt's bees or even the chapstick brand's all natural stick are fine for preventive maintenance.

Probably, your best bet for healing is the blistex everyone else is recommending. Just wanted to give a heads up for future lip health.

Also, if you lick your lips when they dry, you're not doing yourself any favors. So try and stop that, if you do it.

You don't want to heavily use any kind of "chap-stick" or balm that has Petrolatum in it. Prolonged use of said sticks can actually shut down your lips natural ability to produce moisture, leading to more commonly occurring and more severe chapped lips.

You need to try to find balms that contain bee's wax, or lip oils, which contain glycerin. Also, like stated above Vitamin E capsules can be popped and used.

My lips were seriously chapped earlier this winter. I tried Chapstick, Blistex, and just about everything else I could find and nothing worked. Then I started using Vaseline, and in a couple days it was much better. Remember to apply it right before you go to bed too.

    My experience has been that Chapstick is just about useless;

I find that Carmex > Blistex > Chapstick.

I'm down with the V-E. You can actually buy it straight up in the bottle from most supermarkets. It works well with pretty much everything superficial-cracks, light burns, abrasions, friction, rashes. Awesome stuff.

Having dealt with dry lips my entire life, I have used pretty much all of the above solutions, from taking extra vitamins and using vitamin E oil to all of the various lip balms, and there is one that has stood far above any other I've tried in 22 years.

Burt's Bees chap stick. It works better than ANYTHING short of a prescription. You can find it at most organic food stores, bookshops, and specialty stores. It's about $2 a tube and works wonders!

Ingredients: Beeswax, coconut oil, sunflower oil, tocopheryl acetate & tocopherol (vitamin E), lanolin, peppermint oil, comfrey root extract, rosemary extract.

I always keep a tube of this stuff with me. It is as essential as my multitool and my car keys. :)

If you're using Burt's Bees, get the Pomegranate or Honey kind. Too much peppermint will sting and dry your lips out more.

Also, when your lips heal a bit, gently rub them with a wet washcloth to help the dead skin slough off, and after that, keep them constantly coated with lip balm. Don't bite them no matter how itchy they get, and try to sleep with your head propped up so you can breathe through your nose instead of your mouth.

    Lip gloss!

Men hate it on there lip's after you kiss them, but it keeps your lips soft and perfect...in my experience,

Clarins "Moisture Replenishing Lip balm" (it has no colour and doesn't look like your wearing anything, important for the boys...)

    Also drink more water...9-10 glasses.

Lips can get wind burn and sun burn before other parts of your face, so take care. And if your stressed it can happen as well.
