We all remember "S.T.A.L.K.E.R: Shadows of Chernobyl (SoC)," the game that was supposed to rise from the ashes and strike all other FPS games down, but ultimately fell short due to a lack of funding and lengthy development time. Essentially, THQ came around and set some deadlines, to meet these deadlines a lot of content was cut, the story felt like it took a back seat to everything else. However, for all it's flaws the game had fantastic atmosphere, this looks to be true for the sequel.
Here is what S.T.A.L.K.E.R: Clear Sky looks like.
Here is a cool Clear Sky trailer you should watch...

Features
- A-Life is now fully operational, read below for a description.
- 50% of the areas are new, the old ones have been completely overhauled.
- Game engine overhauled, check out the screens above.
- Increased firearm modularity, add a heap of new modifications to your weapons, make mechanical modifications and choose from a range of ammo types.
- Non-linear story, lead one of nine factions to victory. Confirmed factions that are joinable are the Bandits, Duty, Freedom, Clear Sky, Mercenaries, Internal Troops (Military), Scientists, and Lone Stalkers.
- A constant unscripted war raging throughout the zone between the factions.
- A heap of other shit, look it up yourself.
Clear Sky is essentially what the developers wanted SoC to be, but were cut short due to deadlines set by their publisher "THQ." Now they have thrown off the reigns and are publishing the game through "Koch media" a local and more savvy publisher that has allowed for more freedom. So now we have this thing called "A-Life," same theory as Oblivion's AI, but the NPCs do more than die and smile stupidly at you.
With A-Life, the NPCs belonging to different factions will fight for control of different territories, the player's interaction with these factions determines his standings with them. The "war" is completely unscripted, every time you play the game, different factions will dominate and whatnot. The factions that control more territory will have access to better weaponry, modifications and armour. You can choose not to join a faction, pitting them against each other and picking up what's left. You can play however you want.
Mutants are still around, these things were fucking scary in SoC and there will be more mutant types in Clear Sky, however we are unclear as to what these new mutant types are at this stage.

S.T.A.L.K.E.R: Clear Sky will be released August 29, 2008
EDIT: Oh yeah, they release monthly calendars, no point in posting previous ones unless you're some kind of hoarding weirdo. I'll keep this thread updated with info every month, or if something big happens, like E3 or something.

Wasn't the original in development for like... centuries?
Anyway, I tried to play STALKER again recently, but I can't bring myself to play it anymore. I get so many flashbacks of playing it at release that I have a near seizure and have to uninstall the game.
Will I buy Clear Sky? Probably. I'm such a sucker.
Note: Thread title is awesome.
what?
god damnit, GSC, god damn you so hard. I want to play this on release date. Why must you release this during pax?
Unless... Shit, KHOO, I need you to set this game up on some freeplay computers for pax.

Currently playing my way through Stalker as well. Opting for a patched but unmodded game for the time being. I seem to have weird problems with NPC's when I try to run Oblivion lost.
Running the latest patch(1.3.3)?
Just curious, I'm actually about to start my first OL playthrough. Haven't played since 1.0003 I think, I'm glad there's been some good stuff coming out of the modding community. I tried to get into it when the game first came out, but I'm not much of a coder, and I can't read russian(which a decent amount of the commentary was in).

If they can finally make the game they set out to make, they've got a winner lined up.
Um, I'm playing it on Vista now.
I tried that yeah. But NPC's tend to wander off and around from where they're actually supposed to be for any particular quest. Usually it's because they've upped the amount of re-spawning animals and other critters a crazy degree, but sometimes they won't even go on their way when they're supposed to either (just stay where they are), even when no animals seem to be around.
I think I prefer the original version a bit better, at least for the moment. I don't care about the lack of a sleeping bag either, to me night time is all part of the atmosphere.
The game actually reminds me quite a bit of Fallout, which is a good thing, and understandable given the setting.
Yeah, seems like the Vista crash bug only occurs when you have certain graphics details enabled. There seems to be a homebrew fix available too, so maybe I should try Stalker again.
I'm so witty

I can't really speak for any configurations or anything. In general I've maxed out the details and turned off AA (and turned down AF), and so far it's been fine for me.
I am running on Vista unmodded and have all the settings pretty much maxxed out. Not a single crash. My only complaint really is how easily some of the more complex scripted sequences can be broken. All the freedom vs duty quests are hard as hell to complete without the scripts breaking.
It's probably due to mods, but still.
AFAIK, it's a prequel, before everything went to crap in the original, and there's going to be a whole bunch of factions you can choose to join or fight (or ignore)
Well, here goes...
Chernobyl, radiation, noooooo
exclusion zone
discovery of artifacts, etc, people start coming in
fighting
then you wake up, don't know where you are, but you need to find a man name strelok
This game falls into the fighting category

I for one can't wait for Clear Skies. Well, OK, I can wait until the inevitable second or third patch, at any rate.
I wasn't aware there was going to be a re-release.
Are you sure you're not thinking of "The Witcher"?
The game is $20 on steam. I highly recommend picking it up and clearing a few days off the schedule because it will suck you in. I logged like 16 hours in the first weekend I had the game.
I've just re-installed STALKER along with several updated skins and the oblivion-lost mod, I'm considering switching out oblivion-lost for the AMK mod though...
But now it doesnt even boot up. what do i need to do so the game doesnt crash on the "nvidia - we paid money for this" video?
Edit - scratch that, i patched it to 1.000000000000005 and now it starts.
So i hear there are mods for it now. i think i'll check those out
I loved this game, warts and all.
What do you mean you killed the wish granter? The wish granter was the monolith.
Will I buy Clear Sky? Probably. Will I again stop playing because I keep crapping my pants? ...Probably.:|
Yeah there were multiple endings. The one where Marked One says
Clear Sky looks great as well, looks like they improved the lighting model significantly. Curious as to whether or not they make the A.I Free roam instead of just spawn at random like they originally promised too.

STALKER is not sub-par at all. It may be kinda buggy (for some), but even considering the cut features, the end product is still awesome (in the true sense of the world). I had a ridiculously great time playing this game, and I'm having humongous amounts of fun now, replaying it. I'm still scared of visiting some places (Oh, god, Yantar), even though I've been everywhere before.
Other times they were just daft.

The mutants will probably be a bit more tame since this is earlier in the timeline. Critters from zone evolution, like the blind dogs, may not be as prevalent yet, and there might be earlier stages of stuff like bloodsuckers or controllers. We may even see other things that died off later or were edged out of the evolutionary chain.
I'm more interested in how they plan to fix the transition between normal activity and combat for AI, since this is a pretty common problem with this kind of game. Oblivion had a similar problem with Radiant, in that its characters simulated day-to-day activities well enough and proved at least competent in battle, but suffered problems switching between modes; refusing to stand down until some target halfway across the map was dead, for instance, or being overperceptive of what's happening on the other side of town.
It can't be an easy problem, but a lot of things worth fixing aren't.
Ah well. GSC had my money before the end of the first game. Freeplay could very well have sold the game all by itself otherwise :^:
Now playing: Teardown and Baldur's Gate 3 (co-op)
Sunday Spotlight: Horror Tales: The Wine
FEAR and DOOM don't have shit on S.T.A.L.K.E.R...
Clear Sky is actually a prequel to the events that happened in STALKER
In terms of keeping and enhancing gameplay mechanics, and attempting to implement the ideas that the devs had originally, I suppose you could call it a re-make in a sense.
