Okay, so we have a large clunky database for Filemaker Pro 6. We would like to upgrade to version 8.5 at least, maybe 9. As I understand it, converting files from version to version is a non-trivial process. That's about the extent of my understanding, though. Can someone give me a general idea of what the process would be like getting a file from version 6 to version 8.5 (or 9)? I want to know what to expect.

Nobody here has ever converted a file from one version of Filemaker to another?

Not for those versions. In the old days (like Filemaker 3-5 days) it was basically open the file and that was it. It just sort of worked. What are you afraid of happening when you do it?
No goddamned clue. I have been told horror stories by other folks (who also don't know much about FileMaker) that transfering a file between versions involves, to some extent, rebuilding the file, and that you have to be pretty familiar with how the original file was constructed in order to do it without fucking it up. The people who made the files in question are no longer here, and we don't really have any FileMaker experts.
The whole upgrade issue is sort of silly, because people are insisting we get the most recent version since it has more features, even though they don't know what those features are or how it could help them. I'm looking into the issue and trying to figure out what we should do, and part of the puzzle is figuring out how to update the files. I thought some Real World Tales of Filemaker may come in handy.
