This summer I'll be in rural Peru for 6 weeks and in the fall I'll be in Santiago, Chile for 10 weeks. Right now I'm using a AT&T on a regular domestic plan in the US. I was wondering what my options would be for international calling once I get to South America.
I've heard of just buying a prepaid phone there, but I was also intrigued because my Sony Ericsson w810i headset seems like it might be configurable for online calling via Skype or some other service. I'm not sure I'll even be able to get internet service, let alone cell coverage where I'll be in Peru, but I think I'll definitely need something in Santiago.

Internet service in a home/apartment is going to be 1. expensive and 2. slow, so I don't know how useful skype will be. Your best bet is an internet cafe. For calling to the US, lots of cafes have phones that have very cheap rates (less than 10 cents a minute.) Calling the US from a cell phone will be expensive. But for calling friends, etc. a cell phone is a good idea. You will probably be doing a lot of texting. You can check to see if you can get an international plan with AT&T and use your current phone, but I doubt it would be worth it unless you are going to be calling A LOT.
Hey man, I've been living in Manta, Ecuador for the last 3 and a half months so I have a little insight. When you get down here just buy a prepaid phone if you really need one. The international charges/plans with normal phone companies cost waaaaay more. Movistar is the big company down here so you can do a little research beforehand.
