Nethack keyboard input problem

I've been playing a lot of roguelikes lately, incursion, dwarf fortress, etc. and the keyboard on my laptop works just fine for them. I decided to give nethack another play, since it's been about 6 or 7 months since the last time I played it, and the keyboard isn't working right.

I know the controls, but I try to use them and it just does other things than what I want it to do. j makes me attempt to jump, for instance. Is there anything I can do to get this game working right on my laptop or am I gonna have to tough it out and wait until my desktop is repaired?

    Check your NETHACKOPTIONS, .nethackrc, or 'O' for options. You may have the number_pad option set, when obviously (especially for a laptop) you want the One True Roguelike Keyset. If all else fails, delete your .nethackrc and try again. (I think on Windows the file is called nethack.rc instead?)
