MADDEN 09 - Not coming to PC!

According to PCZone it looks like Madden 09 isn't coming to the PC.

http://www.computerandvideogames.com/article.php?id=186135

Considering the last two iterations of Madden PC were just old PS2 graphic engine rehashes I can't say I am particularly bothered, but for those without a 360/PS3 they will be missing out on Madden Day and that's a great shame!

Discuss, also post Madden Day stories, they make me laugh!

[EDIT: And yes I know it says computerandvideogames.com and not pczone.co.uk]

Wouldn't this mean that only after one year, the Mac would already lose a new Madden (due to EA using Cider)

Is this really an issue? I mean, buy it on one of the other 3432 platforms they're releasing it for.

I'm fairly certain it'll pop up on the N-Gage for pete's sake.

Not really the point. Let's say you don't have anything other than a computer. EA has an exclusive license to the NFL, so you would think that the league would have demanded the game release on all major gaming mediums. PC is a huge gaming medium.

Part of having an exclusive license is not trying to shape the landscape for which gaming traditionally resides. I have never purchased Madden for PC, but the fact is I could if I wanted to. It doesn't take EA a lick more effort to release it, so I think of it as an abuse of their exclusivity power.

I'm guessing that it wasn't selling well enough on the PC to justify the port.

To whoever said "it doesn't take EA any more effort to release it", are you fucking joking? Do you think code just writes itself?

I'm not surprised by this at all, but I am sorta bummed. I'm consoleless, and don't plan to change that, but I do miss playing with my Patriots.

I'd enjoy having a good PC football game (even if it's not NFL licensed) as much as a good wrestling game.

...They had been releasing them on PC?

(Clearly, I don't follow sports games at all, but playing Madden with a mouse & keyboard seems like it would be suboptimal at best.)

They were basically unplayable without a USB gamepad.

PC is the next to smallest market of the 5 (PS2/Wii/360/PC/PS3), no thanks in part to hardware issues and World of Warcraft raping it.

At this point its probably damn near costing EA money to put out PC games that aren't The Sims.

    Well:
While the console versions dramatically changed as the years went by - graphically and mechanically - the PC ones stagnated to the point that side-by-side comparisons looked like they were from the same game.

Might have had something to do with this as well.

In any case, as Rook said, old news is old.

Considering no one outside the US buys Madden, and Europe is where the bulk of PC sales are done, this is not surprising. Why spend effort porting a game very few people will end up buying? That money is better spent elsewhere.

The thing is aside from that, they weren't straightforward ports, which is part of the problem as well. The added cost on top of the fact that what fanbase existed in on the PC market was getting frustrated with re-hashes instead of actually moving the franchise forward was a contributing factor as well. With a stagnated franchise the fanbase is just going to keep getting upset with each new release.

I'm not shocked to see Madden go to be honest. Like you said, it's probably money spent better for them elsewhere. FIFA though, if that were to go, then I'd be seriously worried.

And can afford a $60 expansion pack every year, but not a used last-gen console?

Okay, let's say you're a lake monster in the Scottish Highlands...

Well they have the exclusive NFL license for another 4 years at least. Maybe EA not serving the PC market will help the NFL decide to open the license up to other companies.
