My buddy and I are looking to rent a puzzle adventure game, or perhaps pick one up used to play over the weekend but we have been having trouble finding anything interesting. Something along the lines of one of the Myst games, or Longest Journey/Dreamfall would be awesome. We can play it on just about any console.
We tried Uncharted but, it wasn't anything like what we were hoping for.
Has anyone played anything like this recently? Is it just a dead genre?
Professor Layton and the Curious Village for the DS is pretty good, though it's a more of the direct "if such and such, then such, so what is such?" variety instead of the "click every object on-screen with every item in your inventory in hopes of catching onto the train of logic only the developed possessed". Some of them are malicious or poorly-worded, though, but overall it's quite satisfying.
The controls sometimes made me sound like I had Tourette Syndrome, but Zack and Wiki was a really cool game. They just should have realized all of the waggly bits sucked and canned them.
Thank you for all of the suggestions guys. We are definately going to check out Zack and Wiki, though it doesn't appear to have the kind of drama that I was hoping for.

Haha, that was one of the games that got us started down this path over the past couple of weeks. I just finished it the other night. We have Hotel Dusk on the DS now ready to be played but DS is a bit problematic since only one of us can really enjoy it at a time.
Are the Monkey Island games something you guys think would be possible to find used at a gamestop or something?
Well, a little bit on the horror side, you have Echo Night: Beyond for the PS2. You navigate a derelict space colony and encounter "ghosts", trying to solve their problems and your own.
There's also Lifeline for the PS2. It uses voice recognization technology to guide an AI character through many challenges on an infested space colony (I sense a pattern here). It's a very unique take on the adventure genre, and while it gets frustrating at times due to some commands not being easily accepted (your friend should enjoy you shouting out "SHOOT THEIR STOOOMACKK!!!"), it really pulls you along for quite a ride.
There's also Indigo Prophecy, although it's a love or hate type of game. "Action" sequences are played out in Simon Says format, but the rest of the game is great with convincing dialogue and a crazy story. Well, except the stealth parts.
On the DS front, don't miss the Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney series. They are just simply amazing, because you wouldn't expect a lawyer game to have so many cohesive elements to it, in and out of the courtroom.
If you liked Hotel Dusk, try out their earlier outing, Trace Memory. It's a short romp that utilizes ALL of the DS's features.

Sam and Max is coming out on Wii very soon. I'm hesitant to mention it but there's also a working scummvm homebrew emulator (I think scummvm IS one we're allowed to mention!) for the Wii now. It only supports Gamecube controller input at present but it's still pretty cool. Combine that with Beneath a Steal Sky being free and you have a great night in
Indigo Prophecy is definitely worth a go.
Psychonauts isn't your typical adventure game but it's done by Tim Schafer (Of Monkey Island and other such games) and features an inventory and a fair few puzzley bits. It's more a platformer though
Possibly any of the Silent Hill games if you don't mind them being spookey?
Monkey Island 4 on the PS2 was a very good port.
I don't know what consoles you have at your disposal but Snatcher on Mega CD is pretty good.
Lost, whilst a pretty crappy game, is fairly adventury.
Would Shenmue come under the adventure game category?
If you have a megadrive then Cosmic Spacehead is a good one to pick up
I take it you're more after point and click style but there's nowt much on offer really on consoles so the above my be close enough. 'fraid I can't think of anymore.
I'd recommend Stilllife(maybe one L too much,I'm not sure) for the old xbox. It's a nice adventure where you have to go after a serial killer.Except for two puzzles I enjoyed this game very much.

Still Life just makes me want to cry. It was so amazing up until the abrupt end. They ran out of money, so they had to just finish the game. They had several more chapters planned and a much better ending, from what I've read.

Another Zack & Wiki recommendation. I hear there are a couple other point-and-clicks on the Wii as well, but I have no idea if they're good or not. There's an Agatha Christie one and a CSI one.
Broken Sword, if you don't mind breaking out the PS1. The second one is on the PS2 and Xbox (and should be playable on the present gen consoles, but don't quote me on that), but I haven't played that one. The first one is pretty good though.
If breaking out the PS1 then go for Discworld and Discworld 2. I bought the second game today at a carboot sale and it's still fun (And was only a quid!)

One of the Monkey Island games was, I think it was the 3rd.

The 4th actually, it'ss called Escape from Monkey Island.
The 3rd, which looks just like a Disney cartoon, is Windows only and is called The Curse of Monkey Island.

While it's a PC game, Sanitarium is pretty cool. And really fucking creepy.
Can't remember whether it was good things or bad things.

Good things. This is an excellent game. The DS version of it however is terrible.

So the whole series is in Post Mortem?
