sooo, for the past three to four days, when i insert a game into my 360, about 80% of the time it says "please place this disc into an xbox 360 to play"
as in, it thinks i'm just tossing it into a DVD player.
WTF?
is my xbox on the way out? oooh shit

It's impossible for us to without a doubt prove the non-existence of God. We just have to take it on faith that he's imaginary..
Then you're not covered under the warranty. If you can make it red-ring (sacrifice a chicken or something), then you can get it replaced under the special-three-year-warranty for that problem (and that problem only).

Well, hmm, a week ago, I picked up a copy of Oblivion from Blockbuster, and it gave me the same message, but I tried my friends copy and it ran fine, as did all of my other games.
Try running a brand spanking new game, and if it runs, it's your discs, if it's not, call tech support, tell them it red ringed, and they'll send you a free box so you don't have to wait if it does red ring.

yeah, if it was one used game it could easily be scratches, but if it's most disks it's more likely an issue with the dvd drive
"praying" for a red-ring could work, though if they decide to refurb it (can they? i don't remember anymore) instead of sending you a new one you'd be out of luck... you could also look around and see how expensive a repair it is out of warranty

I got a different kind of red rings not too long ago, and took it to Game Stop for a refurb.
As long as I don't remove a sticker I have on it, I can send it into Microsoft should it red ring again.
I had this same problem. You can either A) wait it out and let the problem deteriorate to the point where it locks up with the RRoD or you can Call it in, explain the problem, and then tell them that after so long it will random RRoD. Even if it doesn't. They will cover it for you no questions asked because I believe the problem you (and I) had is directly related to the RRoD, but I am not sure what the relation is just yet.

Edit: Normally I would NOT say anything like this, but we all know that the 360's are shit-tastic and we deserve to have them replaced.
