Spurred by the awesomeness that is Mario Kart 64, I'm trying to bring the 64 back as the party console of choice with my group of friends. So far so good, but i need my memory refreshed for some more great multiplayer experiences!
What i really want or have;
Mario Kart 64
Goldeneye / Perfect Dark
Xtreme-G 2
Waverace
Smash Brothers
Conker
Stuff i vaguely remember being fun for some reason;
Mario Tennis
Destruction Derby 64
Starfox 64?
Fighters Destiny
Battlezone; Rise of the black dogs
the Mario Parties
4 Player would be best, but anything entertaining for 2 or more is good too.

For the love of god ignore the first Mario Party, unless you want stigmata from rotating the stick so much...
Gauntlet is a bit simplistic and can get rather repetitive, but it caters to 4 people. Also, this may just be my diversion to all Mario Party games, but I'd argue that you stay away from the N64 ones. It's not so much a problem with the games as it is the controller. I vaguely remember playing one with a few people that had a minigame that required you to spin the analog stick around. Best way to do that would be with your palm right? Go try that out and see what happens.

First of all, the stigmata appears below the wrist, not on the palm of the hand. There's no real good place to nail someone right through the hand such that it will support their weight. Actual crucifixion involved driving a spike between the two bones in the forearm. It's much more secure that way.
Secondly, the palm blisters and stick spinning were the ONLY reason competitive Mario Party was interesting. You had two choices: Pain or failure. Just injured yourself winning the 3v1 tug of war minigame to get a star, only to have it stolen next round? Fist fight!
As such, Mario Party 1 is the only entry in the series worth playing.
Oh and let's get this one out of the way: "Wah wah wah steady, deliberate stick spinning worked better you're morons wah ba du ba dur."
No, no it didn't in most of the games. Paddle Battle is the only one that comes to mind. The rest were brute speed. Especially that windup Mecha Koopa thing.
Ahhh yes, how could i forget. Wasnt there tactical nukes to be had in this game as well?
I had alot of fun with Snowboard kids as well, but i never had the chance to try multiplayer. And i remember having a heavy dose of dislike for DK Racing... i dunno what it was but it just didnt appeal to me.
Starfox 64 Multiplayer is so fun if you have two+ people that know how to play the game. New players hate getting totally destroyed.
Really? I thought Starfox's multiplayer was pretty bad. But that's okay because overall the single player was really good.
Anyways, some games I didn't see mentioned:
Wayne Gretzsky's 3D Hockey - My favorite hockey game ever, had 4 players
Bomberman 64 - My favorite Bomberman game. It was one of the few (only?) in the series to have 3D levels which really made things interesting. The pyramid level in particular was really great.

Ditto on Starfox. I actually though it was only fun with people new to the game. Otherwise everyone would be too good at flying and weave between the warp seams at the edges of the map to avoid being hit.
Bomberman 64 was excellent even though my only memories of it involve getting my ass handed to be over and over in 7th grade.
I didn't really like Bomberman 64. The way they handled explosions and the maps in it was such a departure from traditional bomberman games that I could never get into it. All the strategy was gone for me.
Wayne Gretzky however was BRILLIANT. 2v2 matches were absolutely godlike in that game, stealing so often that your friends would punch you in the arm. I can still hear the voice over in my head.
"Stolen!"
"He Steals it!"
"Robin Hood and his merry men are at it again!"
Probably the most fun I'd had in a sports game since NBA JAM on the snes with a multitap.
What about Armorines? That was one game i never got to play and always wanted to. It had co-op... but i hear it might not be worth it.
Wait, is Mario Tennis 4 player? Because that would be amazing.
Because I'm a huge Starfox 64 whore I'm going to tell you to put it on the priority list. The multiplayer was GREAT with skilled dudes. Only problem I tend to have is I'm the only one in my group of friends who consistently gets blue medals every time whereas everyone else only gets them in their dreams. So there's a tad bit of unbalance with us but it's still wonderful. So get it.
Wow I'm seriously dissapointed no one has said this yet:
motherfucking WINBACK!
The grandfather of all these cover system games and I think the most infuential game on the N64. Came out right at the end of the consoles life. Multiplayer so good that we played it more fanatically than Goldeneye.
Of the ones I've played that I haven't seen mentioned yet:
NFL Blitz (though I persoally hate the "Fire Mode" in the later games)
Any Bust-A-Move games
Vigilante 8
F-Zero X
Monster Truck Madness 64
Ready 2 Rumble (depending on stats of the two boxers)
Duke Nukem: Zero Hour (Has anyone ever beaten the single-player part of this game?)

As a hockey fan who has grown up in Edmonton, and drive down the road named after him every day, I cannot continue without correcting the spelling on Wayne Gretzky. Spelling aside, it was a great hockey game.
I think most of the good multiplayer games have been hit on so far. Mario Party 1 is decent. and I will second that Diddy Kong racing is at least an equal to MK64, maybe a bit better.

to me Diddy Kong Racing didn't have enough variety in the tracks. You had like 4 tracks based around a mountain, 4 tracks based in the forest, 4 on the beach, etc...
Kinda like Mario Kart for the SNES and how they had:
Mario Circuit I
Mario Circuit II
Mario Circuit III
Mario Circuit IV
Oh, whats that game where you play as a bunch of tanks and tank-like vehicles?
Also, Vigilante 8.
Battletanx?
I really can't remember. I only played it once, but I had a blast. I remember my tank was like a solid blue color, and I was driving down a city street. OH! and there was a single player that was something to the affect of "all the women are stole'd by aliens, lets get our womenz back!"

That would be the brilliance of Battletanx. nothing like blasting a path through buildings as some little armored trike zips by with your team's flag, only to get shredded by some bouncing betties.
It didnt have much for arenas i dont think, and from what i remember the games i played with friends were almost universally decided on who could combat roll to the shotgun first. That thing ended lives.
We tended to draw out the gunfights sometimes too, just to use cover and feel like badasses.

This. Oh dear god this. I played several later Mario Party games and was bored shitless, but I kept going back thanks to the glorious memories of the first one. It had the best mini-games, "Shyguy Says" as a 4 player game is outrageously good fun for such a simple concept, and "Bumper Balls" was also grand.
I like your points about the potential for painful techniques making for a valid choice of playstyles. Thinking back, that makes so much sense now. If you went too crazy then you might end up with a sore hand, so it was a real choice between pacing yourself or risking shortterm gain for a longterm handicap. Yeah, I'll back up your diagnosis there Dr. Zack.

And starfox's multiplayer wasn't that great. Now single player, on the other hand...
However, mario tennis is really good.

Turok: Rage Wars
What basically is the multiplayer for Turok 2, but much more solid.
Pokemon Safari - Sneasel, Pawniard, ????
The ONLY problem with RW, is that there was a bug and you couldn't complete the co-op mode. I remember it was a monkey level.

Hybrid Heaven was good. It was either really fun, or infuriating (basically depending on whether you're losing by a lot or not).

Was the multi-player on that even decent? Single-player was great, but I remember multiplayer being kind of average.
Everyone's suggestions are fantastic, especially Starfox!
There is however a fantastic FPS not mentioned yet: Duke Nukem 64. The pirate level was godlike.
