so i downloaded the demo because im not familiar with the series, and installed....but when i try to start it up, i keep getting a message saying

"this program has known compatibility issues" and im given a link to civ 4's download page that does nothing to help.

I have vista, and found that the final version gives people similar problems, and some of the solutions were to get a patch or update their graphic card drivers.

Ive updated my windows, and graphics card driver....anything else i can try?

I want to try this game out without having to pay 50$ to see if i like it or not (which as it turns out - i may or may not be able to play)

I don't think you can patch a demo, but for whatever it's worth I've been playing a patched version of the full game on Vista for a while and it's been working fine. Don't worry about regretting purchasing it in terms of the game being good enough, it's easily one of the best PC games ever. Maybe you could borrow a copy from a friend or something?

Civ4 is on Steam for $30. As far as I know, you don't patch demos. They would just include any necessary patches in the download.

Its on gametap. Go to www.gametap.com, sign up for an account. Its only $1 for the first month, and you get to play Civilization 4 and a bunch of other great games. After that, its $10 a month. You never really own a copy of civ 4, but it'll let you play it as long as you have an account.
