So I want to get into classical, because I enjoy it very much, but I know very little about it. I need to know the names of some songs and composers so that I know what to download from itunes.
here's what I've heard recently
There's an episode of season 2 in Dexter where the FBI guy sent in to catch the bay harbor butcher teaches Deb to enjoy classical music, and a specific song she listens to while running. I think it's Brahms or Chopin.
Next, There's a song that plays continuously throughout season 3 of battlestar galactica when Baltar is on the Cylon Bae ship
Finally, there's a composer/pianist who does the Final Fantasy music, but I can't find his name or the right album.
I'd like to mainly stick to classical piano music, but some full blown orchaestra would be good too.

Try Rachmaninov and Liszt. One of the best Orchestral works IMO is Mozart's Requiem. You'll recognize a lot of it, and it's good stuff. It's a requiem, so it's very dark and brooding at times.
With the exception of all along the watchtower, and a couple phillip glass tunes all the BSG stuff is composed just for the show. I know the first season was Bear Mccreary, Im not sure if he did the second season score as well.

I didn't even know what the fuck and avitar was until about 5 minutes ago.
Bear McCreary did seasons 2+3 as well as one, and he's absolutely brilliant.
I'm fairly sure he composed the piano piece for Baltar, it's been a while since I listened to it.
Nobuo Uematsu does the final fantasy music up to 10-ish
Also Scriabin has some great piano stuff. And fun to play. Then Chopin obviously, Bartok, Liszt, Part, Debussey, Ligeti, that's the stuff I've been working on recently, so yeah.
If you like Classical Piano, then Chopin is a great place to start. Try his scherzi. I have for some reason never come across the 4th, but 1,2, and 3 are badass.
His nocturnes and ballades are beautiful. Beethoven also had a bunch of good piano stuff, and Liszt is pretty damn sweet too. Bartok is more modern and harsh usually, but still cool.
As for FF music, the piano collection for 8 had some really good classicalish pieces, particularly Succession of Witches, and The Oath, Silence and Motion, and a couple others. 9 had a few like Eternal Harvest, and 10 had Via Purifico.
FF6 grand finale is a BAD ASS cd. Get it. Also, I have all the piano collections and vocal collections and I cant reccomend them enough. The seiken densetsu OSTs are all good too.

Pretty sure that's Beethoven's "Moonlight Sonata", or at least based off of it.
