getting scratches out of an acoustic guitar

so my buttfuck awesome guitar keeps getting scratched by virtue of the fact that I work with kids (I help them let go of their sexual hang ups). They're not real bad scratches, just little white marks. Any way I can get rid of them?

Can you buff them out with like a buffing-compound and either a rag or maximum-fineness steel-wool? That usually works for minor scratches on stained + lacquered wood.

I don't know what any of those things are. I don't even have a toolbox. I'll totally try them though.

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wood_finishing
They have a chart there that might be helpful, if you know something about the construction and finish of the guitar. Alternatively you could take it to a hardware store and find the oldest old-man employed there and ask him how he thinks you should buff it.

Oh, here you go the English word for it is putty, filler, then finish with thinner.
