Ok, so I have been listening to a few bands recently and they're really about the only bands in their genre that I listen to. So I come to you all to see what all you might suggest!

First up, The Offspring, been listening to Splinter and Smash recently and I really like it, but I don't really have anything else like em, any suggestions?

Next Up! Flogging Molly. Now, I know about the Dropkick Murphies but I never really cared for them, not entirely sure why but I havent. I did recently discover the Young Dubliners which is another band which I am greatly enjoying, so things along those lines.

And lastly for now, Big Bad Voodoo Daddy. This one is mostly the fact that I dont know the names of Swing / Big Band groups, I just love the style and its all pretty great stuff.

So yeah, any suggestions would be awesome, Ill hop on iTunes and check em out! Thanks guys!

    Big Sugar
    Yeah Yeah Yeahs
    and, hmm, Hunter Valentine

Ok, the last two I only suggested because I'm totally adoring them right now, but Big Sugar is seriously damn good if you like swing, I find. Not quite the same, more like reggae meets rock meets blues, but s'good.

Ahh, you know, that music I don't think I have listened to very much, but you might like the bands Gravity Kills, Machines of Loving Grace (their album, "Concentration," was excellent), and God Lives Underwater. Really great stuff, after hearing a few good songs.

Something my friend introduced me to recently is Emilie Simon's music. Again, quite different from bands like The Offspring, but if you search YouTube for her live performance of "Swimming" (it is over 6 minutes long, close to seven minutes), you might enjoy it. Like an experimental rock sort of sound.

Faithless is really great for some nice and provoking tech-flo beats and melodies. Their album, "Sunday 8PM" is very very good, as well as select songs from their newest, "To All New Arrivals."

Finally, Cibo Matto is maybe somewhat well-known, but if you get a chance to listen to "Sugar Water," "Sci-Fi Wasabi," or "Clouds," you might really enjoy them (they are a two-girl group, one of which ~ Miho Hattori ~ is in the group, Gorillaz).

Check them all out if you get a chance, mm! ^_^

Older and less California (read: lame) Ska bands can have a big band feel.

I picked up a used copy of The Toasters - Skaboom! at some little mom & pop operation about 8 years ago and it still sneaks it's way into my stereo from time to time.

The newer stuff is way better production quality though.

Theres only one band that matters:

    THE AQUABATS!
    1191867204-THE%20AQUABATS.JPG

    http://www.theaquabats.com

    http://www.myspace.com/theaquabats

    FASHION ZOMBIES!
    SUPER RAD!
    POOL PART!

They are one part super hero, one part rock n' roll, and 3 parts TOTALLY AWESOME! So that makes them have FIVE PARTS RAD AS HECK!

Also, they contain elements (over their long and elaborate discography) of all the different kind of music you've mentioned, they don't like to pigeon-hole themselves to genres, so their music is all over the place. Also, they're currently signed to the lead singer of Offspring's record label, "Nitro Records" and he contributed lyrics to a song on their third album (before they were on his label).

If you're into Jazzy stuff, have a look at Sister Machine Gun's Metropolis album. Best amalgamation of Jazz and modern hard rock I've ever heard. Particularly 'Temptation' and 'Living Without You'.

Edit: Splinter is Offspring's worst cd, Smash is good though. I'd highly recommend you find a way to get Ixnay on the Hombre, Ignition, and Americana.

Big D & The Kid's Table (Good Luck, Shot By Lammi, and How It Goes in that order... Strictly Rude's good too): Boston ska-punk-thrash

Street Dogs (Back to the World, Savin Hill): Boston punk

Mighty Mighty Bosstones (More Noise & Other Disturbances, Devil's Night Out, Don't Know How to Party... everything else is awesome too though): Boston inventors of ska-core

The Delegates (We All Taste The Same, The Diary of Hamilton Fish): Montreal ska-core

Social Distortion (Prison Bound, Mommy's Little Monster, Sex Love and Rock n' Roll): Cali punkabilly

The World/Inferno Friendship Society (Red-Eyed Soul, The True Story of the Bridgewater Astral League, Addicted to Bad Ideas): the best band EVER. NJ unclassifiable anarchist klezmer/punk.

Half of the dudes from Catch-22 (including the main songwriter) left and later rerecorded Keasbey Nights with their new band, streetlight manifesto. The new version sounds more polished but I'd rather listen to the Catch-22 version any day. Maybe mostly because I listened to that album like 200 times before I'd ever heard of the streetlight version.

    I have two recommendations:

    aggrolites1.jpg

The Aggrolites: An awesome, awesome, awesome (did I say awesome?) blend of funk and reggae music. They have some songs up on their MySpace. I recommend listening to "Free Time" and "Time to Get Tough" on there. If you like these guys, buy their self-titled album immediately. This album changed my life. These guys will be on Warped Tour this summer, so if you live anywhere close to where any such "Warped Tour" may show up at...well there ya go.

Not to mention that they played a song on a children's show that is exclusively about bananas and how awesome they are. It's on their website if you want to take a gander.

    339_phenomenauts.jpg

The Phenomenauts: Kind of like the Aquabats, except they're intergalactic space pioneers who play rockabilly and new wave. If you like good rockabilly and you want to listen to music whose sole theme is space, check these guys out at their MySpace. I recommend "Mission"

Matt S, you have excellent taste. Two of my favorite bands. My band was going to open for The Phenomenauts in my hometown but randomly the date was canceled, so we're scrambling to figure out if they'll be able to play our city or not, cause we were super excited to play with them.

    P.S.

Yeah that's how I found out about The Phenomenauts too. They opened that whole tour. They put on such an amazing show. They're the perfect match for The Aquabats! in a live setting. I heard at some of the shows, The Phenomenauts dressed up as The Evil-Robot-Aquabats! and performed a really bad cover of Pool Party and then tried to kill The Aquabats! as part of the CHARGE!! tour, but they didn't do that at our show.

I ended up seeing The Phenomenauts the next two years as well for their tours, and both times Joebot 2.0 and I had really fun adventures. They're all cool guys, but Joebot 2.0 is hilarious and a really fun time.

As for Offspring/Bad Religion, 90-style punk (my favorite genre): I can't recommend Pennywise enough, as it was suggested earlier. having seen both catch-22 and streetlight live, you should forget about catch and just go with streetlight all the way.

Basically the lead vocalist left catch due to whatever and formed streetlight. I've jumped ship and now go wherever Tomas Kalnoky goes. He imo was the soul of catch-22 and i think streetlight is better than catch in all ways. Highly recommend all three of streetlight's albums.

those who pointed out Op Ivy, Bad Religion, and Social D are dead on, some of the great all time punk bands, I might also recomend Rancid and The living End ( though not as great both are still very solid), for Rockabilly though there is one glarring ommision. The Reverend Horton Heat is a must. Also I dont know how much your up on the classics but The clash, and Ramones have that punk without being hard core sound that the Offspring are derivitive of.
