Like Master and Commander etc etc. With pirates, naval combat, that is exciting and good.

There is the Hornblower series that are based on the novels of the same name by CS Forester. Ioan Gruffudd plays the lead (Mr Fantastic). It is set in the same period as Master and Commander.

Not sure this will scratch you exactly where you itch but I figure it'll at least be a good jumping off point. Enjoy.

Another vote for the Horatio Hornblower series, I believe the scarlet pimpernel was a prominent character in it? anyway, it was terrific and an interesting look backwards a few centuries

Captain Blood. B&W One of Errol Flynns first films. A doctor becomes a pirate. Very good movie, tho it is paced much slower than todays flicks.

Just to add to what Fuelish said about Captain Blood. If you like this one (and hey, it has Errol Flynn) then check out The Seahawk.

If your looking for a pirate movie that is light hearted and comedic, then try The Pirate Movie. Just be prepared to not take anything seriously. And you can blaim my MOM, she loved musicals.

It doesn't have sea combat, but White Squall is pretty great as far as sailing movies go.

If you can find it (and that's a HUGE if), Disney did a miniseries called Return to Treasure Island years and years ago. It had Brian Blessed as Long John Silver and it was really fucking good. I highly recommend it if you can find it.
