look at the map wit the crane and the crates, its snowing and there icebergs and everything from like my map. Thats retarded, is Epic really going that low to steal others work? I can't believe this...
The maps do look really similar even if the boat idea isn't that original.
Edit: Both pictures are from the original mod. Remind me not to get news from gametrailer's forums.

How many shooters have desert maps? How many shooters have jungle maps? I'm pretty sure there was a boat in Shadow Warrior, Deus Ex, Unreal Tournament 1, Call of Duty 1 and 4 and a shit load of other titles.
Maybe it's payback for all the people who pirated their games.
Yeah that would be good, you know what companies should do...let people go online with copied games and then check the copy to see if its real...with a cd key or something and if it isn't they should like do an update thats acutally a virus that makes your monitor explode and shoots glass into your face, then screams OWNED or something from the UT vocabulary

How many shooters have the exact same jungle/desert layout between them?

If there really was nothing up, then they wouldn't have reacted the way they did.
Why wouldn't they? Even if nothing was up they don't want to something that could be financially damaging to them on their own forums.
Well okay OTHER than the common 'shitty game, bugs all around, n00b gun is n00b,' stuff.
It makes them look suspicious. If they wanted to appear honest, they would simply just explain that the mods only look similar because the idea of an antarctic boat level is really common. Instead, they ban the use and delete the thread. That is like screaming out "I did it!"

Or maybe the guy had a history on the forums being a complete twat, and this is was the point they got annoyed enough to do something about it.
Not really taking Epic's side here, just making the point that we really don't have enough details to make a judgement.
A: Any and all user created maps adhere to the EULA, stating clearly in plain English that any maps you create using the tool provided are property of Epic Games.
B: The map he created uses Epic created assets not featured on other maps. He didn't hand paint every texture nor model every single object in the world. IE he stumbled upon a work in progress on the disc.
C: 'Boat in the Arctic' is hardly an original idea.
D : Whining about it on the official forums is a sure fire way to be shut up quickly.
Conclusion: He has absolutely no moral highground here.

It would have been trival to prove the maps were not the same.
Plus, just locking the thread would have been enough, banning and deleting the thread? A bit overkill.
Trivial if that was the only post on the forums ever, but that is not the case. Better to just wipe it out and then only worry about it if a big brouhaha ensues.
Besides, they may be investigating it now but legal doesn't want such a matter public I would think.
Oh come on, are none of you using your eyes? They're using the exact same boat model, with those weird arches and the satellite dish and everything. They're using the exact same skybox as demonstrated, complete with twisters.

It's a complete rip. 100%.
And this random internet person made that skybox all by himself?

That's because the OP has accidentally posted 2 screenshots of the Epic made map, not the user created one.

This is a question, because I would assume so but don't know -
Doesn't said agreement also have something along the lines of "Epic games will credit any user created content to the creator"?

How many boat models would UT3 have? I know nothing about the map editor so no I can't say it's a complete rip till I know what kind of resources are offered for modders.

Follow up: Has anyone here bothered to check if they did instead of assuming?

A:
(a) The Software (but not the Server-Only Software) includes an editor and associated tools and utilities (the "UnrealEd") which were developed by Epic and by other licensors of great software tools. UnrealEd is a really cool feature which allows you to modify the Software (but not the Server-Only Software) or to construct new variations for use with it. These modifications and variations can be both playable and non‑playable. UnrealEd is NOT shareware. You will not combine the Software with any software that is licensed under the terms and conditions of the GNU General Public License or any other open source license agreement. You may not freely distribute it to any BBS, CD, floppy or any other media. You may not sell it or repackage it for sale. When you finish reading this License, you will see that there are additional licenses for specific software that is included as part of UnrealEd. Even though their tools are included in the Software, you must read and agree to those license terms before you can use the software that is specifically referenced.
(b) Using UnrealEd, you may create modifications or enhancements to the Software (but not the Server-Only Software), including the construction of new levels (collectively referred to as "Mods"), subject to the following restrictions:
i. Your Mods must only work with the full, registered copy of the Software, not independently or with any other software.
ii. Your Mods must not contain modifications to any executable file(s).
iii. Your Mods must not contain any libelous, defamatory, or other illegal material, material that is scandalous or invades the rights of privacy or publicity of any third party, nor may your Mods contain, or be used in conjunction with, any trademarks, copyright‑protected work, or other recognizable property of third parties, nor may your Mods be used by you, or anyone else, for any commercial exploitation including, but not limited to advertising or marketing for a company, product or service. iv. Your Mods will not be supported by Epic, MIDWAY, our third party tool licensors or any of such parties' affiliates and subsidiaries, and if distributed pursuant to this License, your Mods must include a statement to such effect. v. Your Mods must be distributed solely for free, period. Neither you, nor any other person or party, may sell them to anyone, commercially exploit them in any way, or charge anyone for receiving or using them without prior written consent from Epic and Midway. You may exchange them at no charge among other end‑users and distribute them to others over the Internet, on magazine cover disks, or otherwise for free.
vi. The prohibitions and restrictions in this section apply to anyone in possession of the Software or any of your Mods.
Emphasis mine. As far as I can see, there is nothing in there that claims Epic has rights to your created mods, only that you can not sell them.
B: No clue
C: Yeah, since when did every arctic map or desert map or kin look exactly the same? The fact that they look to be the same map, even with the same skybox, is a bit bad. If it had changed a bit, then it would be fair.
D : Getting banned and having a thread deleted for wanting credit to a map you created is a surefire way to ruin a company's reputation

But.. those aren't just similar.. they're practically the exact same.

If it's just static meshes and stock textures, then it's meh.
But if they're stealing brushwork and custom textures, then it's "What the fuck are you doing?"
