Original Star Wars

Hey, I had heard that George Lucas caved a while ago and released the trilogy on DVD in its original format. While I have no problems really with the updated versions; I would much prefer the original unedited versions.

Are these still on shelves? I was not sure if what I have seen in stores contained the original format because it does not really specify. Any help on clarifying this would be appreciated.

Thanks in advance.

You want the ones that look like this:
    517M4V93K0L._SS500_.jpg

    not this:

In fact, I think if they're in individual cases you'd be fine, but the box set is the special ed.

The above post has it right. Buy the single copies, they come with the 'updated' (bad) version and the old (good) version on a separate disc.

For whatever reasons, Lucas did not think it was right to release them in a box set.

So, in summation. Box Set = Bad. Separate boxes = good.

This is probably against the forum guidelines: I gave up on Lucas ever offering the trilogy untainted and bought a set of bootlegs made from the laser discs(That also includes the Holiday Special, THX1138 and special features) I would feel guilty but I have bought so much StarWars shit in the last 31 years*(and at the time Lucas had refused to release the movies untouched) I felt no remorse over it.
He finally did release the originals(He claims) So I bought those to balance any Karma issues.

    *Examples:

    starwarslego003.jpg

Note the 8-track in the background. I have been hooked for a long time.

If it would make you feel better I can get the laser discs here in Japan for about 3 bucks each, and just hold them for you and say they are your copies heh.

The official DVDs are just rips of the laser disc version anyway. If Lucas wants to be cheap...

That, plus the "Let's include the special edition again! 3 releases in 3 years!" are why I didn't purchase them.

I bought the boxed set when it came out for lack of other options. I have the singles set too.

I'm curious as to how Lucas will clusterfuck the collection if he decides to release a Blu-Ray set.

Probably turn all the lightsabers into bubble swords or some shit like that.

Are these the versions that were released with cleaned up effects, etc? When I was a kid we had a VHS set that was pre-special edition but had a number of clean-ups on the special effects side (each tape had a mini-documentary in which they talked about some of the changes they made.

    This is what we had.

I can't tell from the Amazon description what versions those VHS tapes contain. However, I do own the DVDs being discussed and they contain the original theatrical versions of the movies and the re-release versions with new special effects and some added footage.

my wife has the first set of VHS when Star Wars was released. I have to say I watched them on tv for the first time in years and forgot how horrible they are compaired to todays movies.

I have the silver box, but I will also likely pick up the boxed set with all six movies in it when it comes out.

This is my plan as well. I've been waiting for the prequels to come out in a box, and when the reissue of the orginal theatricals came out, I'd already bought the special edition twice (VHS&DVD), so I'm now holding out for the complete saga box. If that means waiting for it to go blu ray, so be it. I just hope it's in time for my (as yet just glimmer in the eye of my wife) children to see it when they're still young.
