It all looked okay to me.

It's hard to get a feel for the whole atmosphere of the game and especially how different it is from a short little walk through an old beaten up cemetary with dogs in it and one cutscene that seemed very Silent Hill to me.

The dogs looked a lot more SH1 than it did any of the subsequent games, but SH1's monsters weren't quite as out there and were a lot more standard monster fare.

But I'm kind of just glad to see a woman in a SH game that actually doesn't look like Cameron Diaz. It's amazing!

    SH1 had pterodactyls.

That graveyard in the video remind anyone of the graveyard level in the Buffy TVS game? It's the same developers (or company). I have to see that the graphics are very underwhelming, the animation of the actors is stiff as shit, but at this late in the game (no pun intended) they are not going to fix any of that.

Yeah, how far in development is this? 'cause those animations and some of the visuals looked horribly washed out and jerky -- and that's a big factor in a franchise that can immerse me like SH can.

I will probably rent it, either way.

Just going on record to say Silent Hill 2 is a masterpiece of a game with one of the most emotionally impactful endings in any game in recent memory. It's also one of the titles that comes to mind immedately when people say games aren't as artful or potent as movies.

Silent Hill 2 & 3 have held up remarkably well, gameplay is still frustrating at times but the graphics still impress - to the art directions credit. This new Homecoming Hill of Silentness seems to be attempting to capture that feel but all signs point to grasping at straws. Maybe the name change means that a true silent hill sequel is still in development with a studio capable of topping ps2 era engines.

I know the original Silent Hill looks horribly dated by now, but I maintain it has the best balance of combat and exploration of the series to date. It was actually a viable tactic to turn your light off and creep by an enemy, monsters could be respectably challenging, and there was a lot of ground to cover; in retrospect it's nice having a game world that at least doesn't feel stiflingly linear, even though there was little deviation from the course of the story.

Not to say I haven't enjoyed games since then, quite the contrary I found even The Room to be decent at times. But when the series starts bringing back the above, I'll take the next game more seriously. In fact, if they could give SH1 the REmake treatment, I'd buy two copies.

Sounds like a few people in this thread need to pick up Haunting Grounds. It's a PS2 Capcom game where you play a young girl with a dog companion who, obviously, can barely fight at all. Almost no random monsters, just sinister characters you see in the game reappearing and chasing you so you've got to hide/evade them. Gets scary as hell too because once they're on you, you start tripping over, the screen goes monochrome, heart starts thumping louder and louder, girl screams for her life...

And the death sequences are among the most disturbing I've ever heard in my life (Game over screen, but you hear what happens to the girl D: ), torture-porn movies included.

Anyway, I'm cautiously optimistic about this. I loved how SH4 approached the game but towards the end it was really tedious and really lost what was special about the clastraphoia-enducing room at the start of the game. Bring back the SH2 days :)

What the fuck are you guys talking about when you are hating on the graphics? They look fine. There's like one shot that doesn't look like it has AA. Man, tough crowd to please.

They're not bad. There's just a couple of times where it doesn't look any better than its predecessors. And the dogs, man, the dogs look horrible.

I mean, come on ,she is wearing a bikini top with the German flag on it and cowboy clothes?
Not even the Japanese design something like this,as long as it's not for an oneechanbara game.

I can't watch youtube while I'm at work, so I can't see what you're refering to. Certainly wasn't wearing a german flag bikini haha!

But I rather enjoyed Haunting Grounds, enough to see it through to the end :) Some of the characters are very creepy.

I'd only recommend it for big fans of the genre as there is a lot of backtracking however. The dog mechanic puts a great spin on it :)

Anyone here played Silent Hill Origins? I got it for the PS2 last week, and am about half way through (I know its a short game, but have been playing Civ 4 a lot aswell, heh). I'm actually really enjoying it, and it has given me a bit of faith that an external company can make a good SH game. Origins has a good atmosphere, great monsters, and the combat isn't too shabby either. It FEELS like a SH game, much more than 4 did in my eyes.

Has anyone noticed that recent pictures of Homecoming look quite nice, but ones from about 2 months ago looked decidedly last gen? Blocky and poor texture work? And before THOSE pictures, it looked very nice... What the hell happened 2 months ago? I'm at work so can't really track down the pictures at the moment, but I have a feeling that the last-gen looking pictures could actually be a PS2 or Wii version of the game. Would make sense to me... especially a PS2 version, considering all other versions (except 1 of course) have been on PS2.

Kind of hoping for more from Climax aswell now... they did a good job with Origins as I said, and with that game under their belt and the experience gained from it, I think they could make an even better SH game. Perhaps they could do a remake of SH1? As someone else here said, if they did a remake of that, I would buy multiple copies.

What I hear of Origins suggest that it tries far too hard to be an SH game, and comes across as a poor copy of 2.
I would much rather games that feel less like the previous SHs and do things we haven't seen before.

I've found it to be enjoyable on the PS2... graphics aren't terrible (though not up to the standards of 3 and 4) and I've found it to be genuinely creepy at points. The story is almost non-existant, but overall I think its a good game. Perhaps if they were working on a remake, rather than an original game, they could do a better job as all the story work has already been done for them.

As for the series moving forward... I agree to a point. SH4 proved that moving too far away from the tried and true formula of the series can have bad results. I'm not saying don't try new things, but at least stick to some of the elements that have made previous games so good. Origins is a much better game than 4 so far, and that is because it treads familiar ground.

The thing is with SH4, was that it wasn't even meant to be a Silent Hill game originally... and it shows. A lot. The connections to Silent Hill were shoe-horned in, the locations, even before having to go back through them, were boring, the atmosphere wasn't the same as previous games, the characters were uninspired, and the monsters the same. The only things I liked were the room itself, but they didn't do enough with it. The first hour of the game, up until the end of the Subway level, was alright, but it just kept going downhill for me from there. The music, as always, was great though.

I didn't mind the ghosts TOO much... they were interesting and a bit creepy, but they did get annoying after a while. The breakable weapons were alright, and inspired Origins, but Origins did a much better job.

I don't know, I just felt SH4 was really weak, and not really a Silent Hill game. Origins feels right to me, even if its not got the best story. It does everything else very well I feel, and for a game not developed by Team Silent and originally for a portable console, it does much more right than SH4 ever did.

SH:O for the PSP is a good time because it is a portable SH.

The PS2 port loses all its charm.

Is it worth buying a PSP for? Because I already have a PS2, and there's not really anything else on the PSP I'm interested in (except Metal Gear Portable Ops, which I borrowed a PSP to play) that isn't getting a PS2 release as well (Ratchet and Clank).

That's what I thought. At one point I was happy to hear that the PSP Slim (or whatever it's called) was going to have AV out because I would just plug it into the tv to play SH0 anyway. So PS2 port sounds like a no-brainer for me.

Didn't play SH4. Mostly based off the reviews, I just read about the plot instead as thats the part I play them for. The games are just too scary for me to enjoy playing through normally. I think the last 3 I had cheat cartridges on for and even then I was scared.

Oh man, I love being scared while I play a game. I don't get scared watching movies, so this is the only thing I can do to get that rush.

But yeah, you're not alone. I have a friend who is exactly like you. He won't play any of the Resident Evil games, none of the Silent Hill games, and I'm sure he won't touch Condemned with a 10 foot pole.

That's what I meant to mention earlier.

Silent Hill 4 was the scariest one, I felt. Not the slow feeling of dread and creepiness that you get from SH2, but the more immediate pants-wetting fear you get from inevitable scares and surprises.
Like your apartment no longer being a safe place to recuperate on the second time through the zones.

I would fucking kill for a Silent Hill 1 Remake. None of this crazy evil sexy nurse bullshit, nurse with humps and crazy controlling parasites, and doctors too. It easily has the best gameplay of the series. 2 has the best story, but the gameplay took a step backwards.

Still wanna pick up 2 and 3 though. I have them both for the pc, but surprise, surprise, 2 no longer works. Let me know if you guys know where to find these two at reasonable prices.

I have a feeling SH5 is going to be mediocre, hopefully I am proven wrong.
