I am tasked for my english final with creating a soundtrack for and then giving a presentation on The Odyssey, the epic poem.

I'm not entirely well versed in classical music, though I do have a few ideas, such as Holst and Tomita, and I know of Mozart and Bach and Beethovan, but I'm looking for something a little more... obscure?

Just something not as well known.

I can come up with the reasoning on my own after listening to it, but, H/A, give me something that's truly epic.

You could always go with "Achilles Last Stand" by Led Zeppelin, though that would obviously be more appropriate for the Illiad. :P

It's about as epic as classic rock gets.

I meant classical as in orchestras and symphonies.

But I like the way you think. ;D

Does the soundtrack have to be classical music?

No, but I'd like a theme, and seeing as it's a classic book, and symphonies have an epic feel to them, in my head they went hand in hand.

If the classical thing doesn't pan out, classic rock was my second choice.

I was thinking of Grantchester Meadows (the pink floyd song) for the arrival on calypso's island and in my head it was totally tits.

Well, check out Holst for sure. A lot of his pieces are very distinctive and lend themselves well to being paired with stories. The Planets especially, but also individual movements of First Suite and Second Suite.

Mahler 5 has some fairly epic moments too.

I was trying to fit in the Firebird Suite somewhere

I like Tomita's arrangement of the Nine Planets a lot, too.

ooh, see also: Mussorgsky's "Pictures at an Exhibition". All the movements have distinct personalities.

It was originally written for solo piano, but it's been arranged for every conceivable type of ensemble.

The clips on this page sounds like a high school orchestra's recording--rife with poor intonation and outright missed notes--but you get the idea, and there's a billion better recordings out there you can track down if you like the music.

"Tales of Brave Ulysses" by Cream damn well better be in there. Maybe you could make it your introduction music.
