Wii:

Mario Kart Wii
Mario Kart Wii comes with the intuitive Wii Wheel, which makes it easy for novices to compete against veterans, so no one is left in the dust. And with a broadband hookup to Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection, players can compete with up to 11 other drivers from around the world for racing dominance. The game includes 16 new courses and 16 classic courses from previous Mario Kart games. For the first time ever, players have the option of racing with either karts or motorbikes. Players can also hit the road as their personalized Mii caricatures in addition to the handful of classic Nintendo characters found in the game. True to the series, the game features tons of racing, plenty of power-ups and oodles of objects for players to use to slow down other drivers. And 10 battle arenas keep players busy between trips around the circuit. Mario Kart Wii supports four different control options: Wii Remote with or without the Wii Wheel, Wii Remote and Nunchuk controller combo, Classic Controller and even the Nintendo GameCube controller. So there's bound to be a configuration that fits everyone's style. Mario Kart Wii launches with a new channel added to the Wii Menu to enhance game play: The Mario Kart Wii Channel. This new channel builds on the online community of Wii owners and lets players compete in tournaments, check worldwide rankings, see when their friends are playing and download ghost data. Virtual Console:

Double Dragon (NES)
Hot on the tails of River City Ransom from last week the theme of violence continues with the legendary Double Dragon on the NES punching its way to the Virtual Console.

The NES version is a fun adaptation of the original arcade classic however there is no 2 player simultaneous option in the main game which is a crying shame (even the Master System adaption managed this). That being said there is a VS mode added in to allow you to take out your aggression on a friend. At the end of the day the single player game is still a hoot to play so we think Double Dragon still deserves its classic status on the NES, but don’t say we didn’t warn you.

And that’s it for this week, only one game! Next week in the series of NES beat ‘em ups we’ll be getting Renegade. Let’s hope there is another game to go with it as it is not in the same league as Double Dragon or River City Ransom sadly.

That's it for this week!

So, we have a big week, eh?

Everyone and their mother is gettin' Grand Theft Auto IV, of course.

But don't forget about gaming's other juggernaut: Mario Kart Wii!

And while you're buying one or both of those, don't forget to pick up SNK Arcade Classics Vol 1! It's only $20 for PS2, and $30 for PSP! Should be an excellent arcade compilation from one of the best developers/publisher of the arcade golden era.

We also see the release of Iron man on everything (but PC). Some people think it looks OK, but I have no idea.
edit: apparently the demo for this game blows.

So what are you buying this week? GTAIV and SNK Arcade, or Mario Kart and SNK Arcade? Or all three?

Because it's easier to do this by platform, in this manner.

And since IronMan is releasing on 6 platforms, it appears 6 times.

    NDS, PS2, PS3, PSP, Wii, and 360

My wallet is about to give out too. I just bought SuperStars tennis because it was $20, and they happen to get in PerfectShots, so I had to get one of those before they disappeared again.

I have to get Mario Kart Wii, but soon after, I have to get Okami and then Shiki3, which I've been looking forward to forever.

WiiFit comes out soon after.. but I'm going to have to put it off, because it's $90.

Speaking of lightgun shooters, I just got a Nyko PerfectShot today. The thing is great - it has a nice heft to it and a large comfy grip. It has a spring loaded trigger so that the trigger isn't reliant upon the B button. It has a decent site too. It works really well, and I can comfortably play House of the Dead 2+3 with the onscreen sites turned off after calibration.

SNK's got an arcade comp out, too, which I want to get, but it may have to wait, like Wii Fit. I need more monies!

I hear ya. I just picked up Breath of Fire III for the PSP, Civilization IV Complete Pack (On sale on Steam for $39! Damn good deal.) and last week I pre-ordered WiiFit and this week is Mario Kart and GTA IV. Ugh. I have to sacrifice GTA IV (I didn't particularly enjoy the first three)

Oh and thanks for doing this slash. That is the one thing I missed about hanging out on Joystiq - they would post all the game releases for the week. I don't miss the asshattery though.

    (Yes, I'm getting GTA)

Did anyone else try that Iron Man demo? It sucked. I don't often say that about video games - I can usually find a very redeeming quality, but that demo just... sucked.

Totally mediocre gameplay, Hulk:UD on the PS2 had a better desert environment... ick. The only thing that looked halfway decent was 'ol Iron Man himself. Too bad they did that to such a beloved character.

I'm not saying it's surprising - just disappointing. The surprise is that they let that fugly demo out.

Yes, thanks Slash for putting this thread together each week. It has been consistently produced and a fine place to discuss the latest releases.

I've seen the Perfect Shots in my local Gamestop once or twice, and they look quite tempting. The Wii Zapper definitely has a squishy, kind of soft feel to it. How comfortable is the Perfect Shot for prolonged use? The other thing I've noticed about the Zapper is that the grip isn't too ergonomic, and can feel awkward in a long session. At least, to me.

My game budget is definitely being pushed to the max this week, and I don't know if I'm going to be purchasing any new games in May. Of course, this thread may "help" me to change my mind. :)

Chance, about the Iron Man character model, for what it's worth I recall reading in Game Informer (I think) that ILM helped to create the model and lended the dev team their assets from the movie effects. I agree that he looks quite striking but that the rest of the demo was decidedly below average. The concepts behind the gameplay were fantastic, but the execution wasn't quite there.

Yep. Even Robert Downey's VO was a disappoint. Le sigh.

I like the Zapper, I find it pretty comfy to hold, and I don't mind the "squishy" trigger, because it's still responsive and you can still shoot really fast with it. But I think the Perfect Shot is a little bit better of a design for faster-paced lightgunners like HOTD2/3. The Zapper is nice for steady shooting because you can hold the thing with both hands to steady your shots. This can be helpful in Ghost Squad, and actually in REUC as well (except you would not have the nunchuck in its slot for that game).

I'm really busy this week, but I'll give the PerfectShot some more playtime with HOTD and probably Ghost Squad since those have calibration. I'll letcha know how it is. From playing HOTD2's first two levels, though, it practically felt like I was playing the game in an arcade, since I had the on-screen sites turned off and everything, and you don't need the nunchuck for that game.

    RE: Iron man

Too bad to hear the demo sucked. It sounded / looked like a good concept; it seemed like it would've been like The Hulk but with the ability to fly and shoot missiles. But... I guess we'll have to hear more reviews/hands-ons/opinions, since the demo is apparently a turd.

    It includes:

Why were they playing the basketball minigame when they could be out flying planes and killing cops?

I have no fucking idea. Thats why I always brought my Guitar Hero stuff over so we could do something that everyone considered fun.

I'll be getting GTA IV next week after finals are all done, but nothing else. Mario Kart looks like the same game I've bought a few times already, I think I'll wait for the next Nintendo system before getting another Kart game and at least get a significant leap in visuals over Double Dash.

    Totally understandable.

Although for me, the bikes and stunts as well as what I consider a refinement in how boosts are handled combined with online multiplayer and a bunch of new as well as classic tracks has me sold. For me, it's enough new good stuff as well as fixing of previous things to justify it.

But yeah. We all have those instances of games in a series that we are comfortable passing over simply because it's just another sequel in the franchise. I've skipped over lots of stuff in the past.

Pretty much exactly what I was going to say. GTA's multiplayer looks pretty fun, so that might convince me to pick it up, but either way I can't afford it for a long while. These past couple months have been killer with the new games.

I just remembered that I earned a $50 gift card by doing online research for a course this semester. That certainly helps take some of the load off my wallet.

How is the PSP version of SNK Arcade Classics more than the PS2 version?

That's all I'm interested in, but ironically, the ones that're supposedly the best(Magician Lord, Last Resort), I've never played.

Oh fuck. Last resort? On the PSP?
