I have an oldish (got it in 2003 or '04) LCD monitor, and when I got home tonight I was greeted by a lovely psychedelic pattern of lines and gradients. I tried everything I could think of - hit the autoset button, hard-restarted the PC, power cycled, pulled/cleaned the video cable, etc. - and still got nothing but vertical/horizontal lines and diagonal blurs. I've come to the conclusion that it's something within the display itself, as trying to pull up the onboard menu adds a splash of red to the mix rather than, you know, pulling up a menu. Considering a heat issue, I let the thing sit for a couple of hours in front of a fan (it's not very warm in here, but it couldn't hurt), but still nothing. I have one fucked-up LCD, and it seems odd to me that there were no warning signs of this happening.
So, the question - is there any hope of my planned stripping this thing down and cleaning/reconnecting the internals tomorrow actually doing anything? Any suggestions for possible easy bodges? Should I even bother, or should I finally rescue this monitor's twin from my ex?
One thing I can think of is check your connection to the PC. I had a monitor that did some pretty crazy stuff due to one of the prongs being missing on the DVI conection. either count them or try another of the same format you use to connect up the monitor. It probably wont be it, but hey you never know.

Your monitor controller board (the circuit board that converts jibberish monitor language to vga) might be going out as well.
I'm getting into homebrew projectors so I've been having to deal with this regularly. You can buy them online in several flavors, from standard vga to super deluxe hdmi, dvi, and rgb television format.
Now that we have that out of the way, have you checked your video card?
Try removing it and re-enabling onboard graphics and see if the monitor comes back up.
