Managing Fillable .pdfs

edited May 2008 in Help / Advice Forum
Okay, so I'm working for a place where I have to fill out a shitload of fillable .pdf files. I'd much rather e-mail them than fax them, so I'm looking for a way to save them after they've been filled out that doesn't involve purchasing the pro version of Adobe Acrobat. It's worth noting that the .pdfs in question open in IE, and I haven't been able to figure out a way to get them to stop doing that.

Would the pro version of Cute PDF be able to handle this?

I think the free version of Foxit can, though it's been a while since I've used it. The Foxit main site has an irritating "sign up for these free offers before we give you a download link" policy, but the installer can be acquired hassle-free from Softpedia and their ilk.

Edit: Foxit has a browser plugin -- might work if you disabled Adobe's / enabled theirs.

From the form can you do Documents > Forms > Export? Or something along those lines?

Edit: Nevermind, doubt that if you're in a browser.

Probably the easiest way I can think of to do it is to install a PDF printer and just print the completed form into a new PDF. There are free PDF printer programs available.

Yeah, I believe this is what Cute is supposed to do, but I can't get it to do it with the free version.

That'd kill the editability of the PDF, but otherwise, yeah, good idea. An open-source option for such a PDF printer can be found via Sourceforge.

Edit: Is your PDF-reader of choice not offering a "print" function?

Any idea how I disable Adobe's? I've turned off all the plugins/extensions from Adobe I've got, plus a few more.

I'm running IE 7.0.6000.16643, if that helps, and an updated version of Adobe 7.0.

I get this error when attempting to print the filled-out forms from the browser into CutePDF (it appears in the "printed" adobe document).

I don't really care if the editability is killed. It doesn't need to be edited after I fill it out, it just needs to be signed, which means they have to print it out, anyhow.

I'd say try other options besides CutePDF to see if any of them work for it: Foxit Creator, the PDF creator Oz linked or this one

It might be an issue with CutePDF, from the way you describe it. Perhaps try a different PDF printer -- the open-source one I linked earlier, or possibly BullZip.

This is, of course, assuming you have the ability to install software / virtual hardware on your workstation. >.>

Foxit turns all the text on the form into dots (including the text that was already there, not fillable or editable). PDF Creator gives me the same error as CutePDF.

I suspect this is because I'm trying to do this from a browser. Anyone know how to not do it from a browser?

Well, are they links that you're opening, or are they PDF files on your computer that for some reason open in IE?

If they're links, is it possible to save the PDF from the link first and then just open it from your computer?

If they're already on your computer and opening in IE, try right clicking on them and choosing Open With, and pick your PDF program instead of IE.

They're links I'm opening that are opening in my browser as .pdf files. Turning off Adobe extensions doesn't seem to prevent this. Saving it makes it so the document can't grab the information from the website it needs (right now, I put in an ID number, and it fills out a bunch of stuff for me). I don't have an "open with" option.

So, FoxIt, when I print from Firefox, gives me an error of "cannot find the font Z@XXXX.tmp" where the "XXXX" changes depending on which form I'm looking at.

It seems like they've specifically designed this interface to fuck you over for using anything other than the full version of Adobe to save these things. :?

You might have to Shift-Right click (or ctrl-right? I forget) to get the Open With option. Of course since you say this breaks the auto-filling behavior of the form this wouldn't really help.

Try opening Adobe Reader, going to Edit, Preferences, Internet, and uncheck Display PDF in Browser. Then try closing and reopening IE and opening the PDF to see if that causes it to open externally in Adobe instead.

The opening Adobe Reader thing worked.

Unfortunately, it also killed the ability to download info from the site, which means it's pretty much useless to me. :?

Well it's nice of them to make it as difficult as possible to access this stuff. I'm out of ideas. It looks like the forms auto-filling at least is linked up to with opening in a browser, so you may not be able to get around that.

I'm tapped out as well -- in the course of running off to take care of my own job, Daenris ran through the steps I would have recommended.

See if Foxit Reader has a similar setting for view in browser, and if that will pull auto-fill information. If not, then you might be stuck with the fax.

So filled with rage right now...

How the fuck do I get Adobe to go back to opening up .pdfs in the Internet Explorer window? I've fucked with every setting I can find, even re-installed Adobe twice.

There is no "open with." This is the same shit I was trying to stop opening in Internet Explorer earlier, that now absolutely refuses to open in Internet Explorer.

Yes, like four times, and I just did it one more time to make absolutely sure.

I assume that if you got to acrobat reader and go to edit > preferences > Internet you have "display in browser" checked off.

So right now it is still opening in Foxit Reader? or Adobe Reader? Have you tried uninstalling all the random PDF readers you just installed? I suppose it is possible that some setting in one of those programs is having an effect on how your computer is handling .pdfs

I uninstalled all of them before I even posted, and just checked for the tenth time or so that "display in browser" is, in fact, checked.

Thats kinda fucked. I deal with adobe issues quite a bit at work.. (remoting into peoples computers and fixing shit). So far in my experience setting it to "display PDF in brower" usually works...

Wish i could be of more help. I've kinda gotten spoiled by the whole remoting into people's computers thing.

Do you possibly have multiple versions of Adobe or something that would confuse it like that?

Yes. I've removed and reinstalled them many times.

I also tried uninstalling Acrobat Reader, deleting all Adobe registry entries that I could find, then re-installing it.

    Same fucking problem.
