Free Comic Book Day 2008

Tomorrow (May 3rd) is Free Comic Book Day. I thought we might have a thread to talk about what we intend to get, what the stores did for the day, and to gloat over our respective hauls. In case you hadn't seen it, the list of comics available is at http://www.freecomicbookday.com

Personally, I'll be swinging by 3 of the 4 shops here in town, so I ought to be able to get all of the books I want. If they're anything like last year, at least a couple of the shops will have sales as well. The books I want to get are X-Men, Hellboy, Marvel Adventures, Tiny Titans, Project Superpowers, and Kid Houdini and the Silver Dollar Misfits.

Robos A Go Go

I'm getting whatever I can get. I mean, the entire point is to get people reading things they wouldn't usually read, right?

I'm also going to get Hellboy Library Edition at a 25% discount which, all things considered, is still more than it'd cost on Amazon without shipping. Still though, I'll at least be able to return it if I hate it, which I probably won't.

I didn't even realize until this morning it was FCBD tomorrow! It's like Christmas in May!

I'm planning on yanking the Hellboy and Tiny Titans books, as well as whatever else I can get my hands on.

My son is planning on grabbing All-Star Superman and Transformers.

The shop I'm going to has some grand opening thing going on tomorrow, apparently, because they just moved to a new (larger) location. They've got a local radio personality coming, and a couple artists I've never really heard of.

Cosmic Monkey Comics is having a bunch of local artists come in for their Free Comic Book Day, including the writer/artist of Fear Agent and the writer/artist of Too Much Coffee Man.

Unfortunately I have to work on FCD, but I'm going to try to shoot out on my lunch break and snag the free Atomic Robo, since it's the only thing I really want. What sucks is that my shop's having a few pro artists in to do sketches and stuff, and I won't be able to take advantage. I know Billy Tucci's going to be there, as well as some guy that draws Freddy v.s. Jason and apparently lives in the area. Then some other dude I've never heard of.

Ah well.

My LCS is having a cook-out tomorrow, as well as a bunch of stuff on sale.

I've mentioned this in another thread, but if you're in the New York City area, I recommend going to Midtown Comics - experience from previous years suggests that you will get in the neighborhood of 30-40 comics there (as I understand it, you get one of each FCBD-branded comic, of which I count 41 on the FCBD website). In comparison, most of the other major stores will give you maybe 10 at the most.

Also, the Iron Man HeroClix figure? Looks sweet.

My LCS sucks for Free comic book day on comics - Limit 1 per person and I have other things to do tomorrow which means I can't cruse around to get what I'm missing out on. But between me, the misses, and the kid; I should get 1 good book. I let my child pick what she want she wants. On the upside, my LCS does give away some cool swag. I've scored a free Hero-clixs figure last 2 years. Spidey and Bats so far. Not to mention posters, bumper stickers, a just stickers. And a photo op with Spider-man last year.

I guess my LCS ain't that bad really.

I forgot to add my comic book store did something totally awesome for Free Comic Book day.


When Spider-Man 1 came out they sold tickets to it. It was a little more then ticket price but you all the free comics, all the swag, and entered a drawing. That it's really not that awesome when you read it.

But 1st showing of Spider-Man in a room full of comic loving geeks (including myself) with out other people who don't "get it" was way worth the price. When Spidey hung upside down in the warehouse, a chear was heard from the crowd.

Best time I had at the movies ever. Bar none. And I owe it to free comic book day.

I got The Broken Trinity, Tiny Titans, Avatar: The Last Airbender, Transformers, Avengers/Invaders Sketchbook, Hulk/Iron Man, Hellboy: The Mole, Hellboy: The Golden Army, Dan Dare, Devil Man, and X-Men, along with the Hellboy Library Edition which wasn't free.

The free books I got were Hellboy (FCBD and Golden Army), All Star Superman #1, Project Superpowers, X-Men, Graphic Classics FCBD Edition, The Stranded/Dan Dare, Atomic Robo, and Broken Trinity Prelude. Besides that, one of the stores had free random older issues, so I got JSA Classified #8 & 9, Action Comics #850, and an Absolute Sandman preview book. I also got the Iron Man Heroclix figure, and I bought Essential Luke Cage vol. 2 and Essential Power Man and Iron Fist, along with about 10 back issues. Overall, I got a lot of shit to read. I did notice, though, that the shops were giving out fewer free books this year. My main shop only gave out three, but they did include a coupon that's good until next Saturday to get 3 more free comics.

So I went to the first comic book store nearby to pick up some free comics and Cable and Deadpool #3. Then I went to the second comic book store nearby. They were having a 30% off sale on TPB... damn, I wasted like 4 bucks, oh well. Then I wander to the back of the store and notice that there are some people kinda gathered around. Turns out Phil and Kaja Foglio of Girl Genius fame are there as part of the event or something. I just thought this was completely awesome as I'm a huge fan of Girl Genius and seeing them there was completely unexpected. I previously had, but lost, the first few volumes so I took the opportunity to replace 2 of them with signed copies. Today was a good day.

Toxic Toys

Every book I got had a big ass sticker on it, and there was no swag this year other then the Iron Man and Clone trooper Hero Clix. FUCK YOU ATOMIC COMICS!

I did get Teen Titans, X-Men, Salem, and Broken Trinity Prelude. My kid got Transformers Animated and Gyro Duck. And her first Pokemon toy, Buneary - I bought it.

As far as the ones that were available, I grabbed Hellboy for my wife, and one I'd never heard of before called "Maintenence" caught my eye. I read it. It was hillarious. Free Comics day scores another successful new customer.

And though I don't play hero clix, I grabbed 'em both... maybe some monitor decoration.

But in truth, I went for the deeply discounted sale at my local comics store. Maintenance was a good find, but 50% off Magic singles was too good to pass up.

My LCS didn't get the Iron Man heroclix, but I loaded up on burgers and hotdogs! I was also able to pickup just about all the FCBD books.

My favorite Dallas comic store, Zeus Comics, does a big outdoor show for FCBD every year. This time I was able to get Mark Waid to sign my Absolute Kingdom Come, Tony Bedard and Gail Simone to sign some Birds of Prey, as well as Atom and Agent X for Gail, and Greg Pak to sign my WWH hardback. And the wife made enough at her artist table to cover the long box of quarter books I bought. Other than sunburned arms and neck, was a great day.

FCBD has taught me I need to either go to a bigger city for it or I need to publish a popular comic so that my LCS can make a big event out of it.

Edit: Lolz, it was yesterday, when I actually could've gone for real. Balls.

How'd it go? I haven't done one of these since the first two, and I'm honestly surprised they still go on.

had to work but called my lcs and had them hold a set of the free books for me but no sale or heroclix which was upsetting. got home looks like I got most but not all of the free books. think my lcs may not have ordered all of them too bad that Maintenance book looked cool. Oh and I picked up the new thor hardcover

I got the Iron Man heroclix. I don't play at all but it'll look good with my other stuff. My store only allowed you to have 2 items (IM counted as one ) but if you had a coupon you could get 2 extra items. I didn't have the coupon but since I'm a loyal customer I got 4 times . Got X-men, hellboy, Allstar Superman and the Iron Man. Also picked up the Fallen Son trade and the first Fables trade at 30% off. I almost picked up some back issues of Alias (in a set) but decided not to even though they were 10% off as well
