So I'm trying to get some pictures off of my girlfriend's laptop and everytime it gets past the password/user name screen, it goes to the BSoD. Is there anything I can do to get around this? Even the last "good configuration" option is resulting in the error.
Going into safe mode and there's no pictures there, so I don't know what that means.
I don't know Vista at all but from my tech experience not seeing files you know are there are indications of a hard drive dying (in which case they're probably gone). Have you been able to try the usual scan disk? That would be the first thing to try. After that, if Vista has the similar option that Windows XP had, you can reinstall the OS overtop itself so it restores any corrupted system files, which may solve the BSOD. If you are able to get into safe mode but not regular mode that may mean something as simple as corrupted drivers but again could be more serious like (again) the hard drive failing and therefore corrupting your files. You said it's a laptop, do you have a habit of shutting it down, or just closing and picking up and going? If it's the latter, than you may be in for a bad hard drive, the hard drive doesn't always turn off as soon as you think it may in stand by, and then by moving it while the hard drive is spinning then you could have damaged the hard drive. I don't hear of it happening often but it's not uncommon for people that work out of their trucks and drive on bad roads.
If you wanna take the safe route is taking out the hard drive and putting it into an enclosure or device like this (LINK), an option for you. That is usually a route I recommend if your comfortable on taking the drive out.

edit: Ah, I get it, you're just knocking on vista. There's probably a better place for that.
