Virtual Console:
Pokémon Puzzle League
Renegade
And that does it for this week!
What's everyone getting?
For me, I'll probably pick up
Boom Blox, because it actually looks like a lot of fun. I'm also very interested in seeing
R-Type Command aka RType Tactics, because I'm a slight RType fan and it looks interesting and unique and has a cool style.
Otherwise, the PSP finally gets its version of
SNK Arcade Classics, since the PS2 got its version last week. So that's a good portable buy.
Other than that... er.... Well, Nintendo is publishing
Crosswords DS, so maybe that game is okay - it's clearly a Touch Generations game. It's crosswords, held Brain Age (book) style! Might be good if you need to do crosswords, although the New York Times version is supposed to be really good.
Speed Racer is out. All I know about it is that it looks like a cross between Fzero and Extreme G.. but I've never heard of the developer (Sidhe) so who knows. *edit: apparently Sidhe made gripshift, so this game shows promise
PS3 owners can now get
COD4 GOTY edition, too, since the 360 got the same version a while ago. So get that game if you like... good.. games... yeah.
Anyone else getting some'm some'm?

Seriously, I figure if I don't get that SNK Arcade at launch, it'll be gone.
There's a demo up for download of R-Type Command at the Playstation Store.

Even though I promised myself I wouldn't do this much, this will be the fourth game I've downloaded which I already own on a platform that works.
PPL
Super Metroid
Harvest Moon
Startropics
There are at least ten other games I'd probably do the same to.
Same.

Does that make me a bad person?

Hell no. It's actually pretty fun, although I got my ass handed back to me on the third demo level.
Yeah it looks like a lot of fun. There's going to be something like 300 levels, and there seems to be plenty of variance, and then you have all the different types of block creatures, the different multiplayer modes, and the level creation editor thing. The fact that it has all of this content and makes excellent use of the wii's control features, and it looks pretty good in a stylistic kind of way that is conducive to the wii's hardware, it seems to have all the right ingredients for an excellent Wii game.
Fuck no! That game looks like a really cool, unique perspective on the strategy game formula, and it seems to be full of sweet RType fan service stuff.
I didn't realize it was by the Gripshift people. Now I'm significantly more interested in it than I was before.

Yup, it's that rare elusive third party designed-from-the-ground-up for Wii beast that everyone is always looking out for. Should be quite a bit of fun. Plus, who doesn't love playing around with physics playgrounds? The Wii is the perfect platform for gameplay like that.

Indeed.
I just hope EA markets this thing well - the accessible concept, the excellent use of Wii features, the family friendly gameplay, the multiplayer gameplay, the great style - combined with the Steven Spielberg name, this could do really, really well if EA markets this thing properly.
And when I say markets it properly, that means doing it smartly. Because printing ads in the typical "gamer's" magazine, or running website ads on gamefaqs or IGN, or running commercials on G4TV, that's not the way to sell a game like this. EA needs to run commercials that are just like the "Wii Would Like to Play" commercials, and they need to run them during TV shows that are more inclined to appeal to the same audiences that enjoy games like Wii Sports or Mario Galaxy or Mario Party 8.

You can see what I put into the spoiler tag...
Also, there are only a few reviews out, but only from magazines that I can tell:
80
PSM3 Magazine UK
Fans might feel confused at first, but they won't be disappointed. [Feb 2008, p.78]
80
Play Magazine
The R-Type shooters have always been tough-as-nails, and as it turns out, the strategy game is no different - a rarity and a blessing in Japanese games of late. [Jan 2008, p.69]
60
Edge Magazine
Tactics lacks what it needs the most, which is the seemingly limitless potential achieved by its predecessor. [Feb 2008, p.94]

I may have to pick it up. I love R-Type and I love tactical stuff... Hmm...
Steam ID: slashx000______Twitter: @bill_at_zeboyd______ Facebook: Zeboyd Games
There's a demo of R-Type Command on the Playstation PC Store. I briefly tried it but it was more out of curiosity, as tactical play isn't really my forte and seeing the walls of stats just made my eyes glaze over. I thought it was kind of a hybrid of action and strategy but it looks to be 100-percent TBS.
Hmmm, we sort of do need to bring the /realspoiler back. The problem is the spoiler tags are just too useful for hiding info out of the way.
As for games, I've heard all kinds of hype about Boom Blox from all kinds of places including those that seem Wii adverse. I'll probably have to pick it up.
(Please do not gift. My game bank is already full.)
The 2 things most knocked off for is the only 1 or 2 player mode and lack of online racing.
Nintendoworldreport:
Speed Racer at its core is an amazing game, with great depth, control, and nice difficulty progression. Perhaps Sidhe Interactive will use this great engine (and maybe even the Speed Racer license) for another title with more inspired track design, better graphics, and a more fully-featured package overall.
Gamepro:
I'm sure anyone with a taste for combative racing is deep in their quest to unlock everything Mario Kart Wii has to offer, but if you're looking for something faster, with a lot more car-fu, Speed Racer: The Videogame is surprisingly recommendable. For what it is, with voiceovers from the actors, what I imagine is probably movie soundtrack, and some excellent-looking, swift racing with seriously fun combat stunts, Speed Racer: The Videogame is awesome. Popcorn game for a popcorn movie? Nothing wrong with that.
Also, Boom Blox has been getting great reviews, too, as I posted in the BB thread:
1UP
Boom Blox may not be the best Wii game, depending on your proclivities, but it's definitely the best use of the Wii yet. It's immensely accessible, wonderfully tactile, and stands as one of the best treatments of gaming in a 3D space.
Nintendo Power
The production values aren't going to win any awards, and some of the mechanics work better than others(the hose is pretty lame), but Bloom Blox is an innovative and amusing piece of entertainment worthy of the Spielberg name. [June 2008, p.87]
Wired
Boom Blox does what so many Wii titles wish they could, by splitting the difference between casual players and lifelong gamers. You can pass the Wiimote to your grandma or a 5-year-old and they'll have a ball with its clever mix of brainy puzzles and satisfying explosions. But hard-core players like me will find a surprising amount of depth to the gameplay and a satisfying, addictive challenge.
