So i did a pretty thorough search, didn't find anything. so, NEW TOPIC!
Today (cinco de mayo! aaaieee!) Trent Reznor updated NIN.com with a post about his new record, not to get people hyped for it's coming release date, but to actually inform people that it is now out and ready to be downloaded.
No warning other than the release of a single about one week ago.
"The Slip" is the new record.
1. 999,999
2. 1,000,000
3. letting you
4. discipline
5. echoplex
6. head down
7. lights in the sky
8. corona radiata
9. the four of us are dying
10. demon seed
and i know the debate will rage again about free downloads, and whether it's a gimmick or actually putting the proverbial boot up the proverbial ass of the proverbial RIAA (that last one wasn't necessary. sorry.)
personally? i'm fucking
ecstatic to see this happening.
the other new twist on this free download binge?
a
1.21GB completely lossless .wav download of the record
finally, our musical 1.21 giggawatts has been found.
comments?
***i'll also edit in, i've not heard the whole album yet so i cannot comment on the content. i've only heard the single, which i was somewhat surprised with. I put in my email for the download about 20 minutes ago but have no received it yet. blink blink.

It's impossible for us to without a doubt prove the non-existence of God. We just have to take it on faith that he's imaginary..

The Slip is just all-round awesome. Electronic elements from YZ, dense sound layers from the Fragile, a dash of W_T and Ghosts for good measure along with some new sounding stuff. Standout tracks (IMO) are Letting You, Head Down, Lights in the Sky and Demon Seed.

I like that we don't have to wait quite so long between songs/albums from NIN anymore.
This is pretty dumb. WAV has no advantage over lossless compression like FLAC, why would they waste the bandwidth?
So is he ever going to do the follow up to Year Zero or is this it or what?
It's easier to work with in programs like Audacity or FinalCut or whatever, and Reznor likes to encourage fans to remix his music.
They do also have FLAC versions, the 1.2GB one is just for people who want to show off their $3k sound system for once.
The FLAC version is CD-quality. the WAV version is better-than-CD quality.
From the site:
Its a trap!
Sheesh, I thought you said this was free
It's worth noting that unless the tracks are specially mixed for 24/96 audio, FLAC is indistinguishable from WAV or CD. For your everyday 16/44.1 stuff, FLAC is as perfect as you can get in a digital medium.
Trent clearly knows his shit and it's awesome to see a 24/96 release, but in 99 out of 100 cases these days FLAC is the same thing as WAV, just takes up less space.
As though I really need to convince myself to get that 24bit sound card and a pair of $600 phones. Some day....
It may be moot, since it seems neither my Zune nor iPhone will support it.

I have to agree with Medopine, Year Zero was awesome sauce.
The Slip is pretty damn good so far. I already listened to Discipline and Echoplex when they were released before the album. Maybe its because I've had time to warm to them, but they really stand out for me.

I know there is a CD-quality FLAC available, but I think it is a poor decision to distribute the better-than-CD quality file in WAV when FLAC will do just fine for that as well at a smaller size.
To each their own, but as someone who owns at least one copy of every halo, it's the only album that got worse the more I listened to it. Personally I'd suggest taking away Trent's steroids, giving him back the the good drugs, and shaving that thing off of his lip.

I'm not arguing for restricting features. FLAC is a more capable format than WAV in every way. Its quality is exactly the same, it supports metadata, and it's much much smaller. Than 1.21 GB WAV file would likely compress down to a 700-750 MB FLAC (not going to test that because downloading a 1.21 GB file = HAHAHA).
Oh yeah, and so far it sounds good too :P
And I agree. It is a little bit odd to put out 24/96 media in an uncompressed format. I'm getting that version because I am a whore. I'll let you fine folks know what it squeezes down to in WavPack after the download is over.
Also, mein Gott, all the downloads are torrents. They've done everything fucking right with this one. I hope other artists start adopting this method with a fairly priced payment scheme. This will be the golden age of me downloading music legitimately.
Still, it's nice to have something that is the exact same as a CD copy.
Edit: Also, audiophiles do suck.
I'm not advocating that people pick one version over the other, I just like that there are options.
I actually just find audiophiles to be silly. But so long as their preferences don't affect my music options I don't really care either way.
