I have enough money to spend around $220 on a used 360 at a local used game store. It's got the HDD and cables and such, but I keep worrying that when I buy it, it's either going to red ring this week or that it, will, inevitavly red ring sometime down the road and I will have thrown 200 bucks away.
so, it a good idea to pick it up? I don't have the cash to buy a new one, but I've bought used systems before (ps1, ps2, dreamcast) and all are perfectly fine to this day. It's just that the 360 has a lot of horror stories that I don't particularly feel comfortable with. Is there anything I should do or know before hand about the warranty?
The store is a really good store for selling systems used. they test them with a few games for a half hour or so before they buy any system from anyone just to make sure it's good to sell.
Well, if you're honestly this worried, you could hold off a bit longer and save up the remaining $130 that it would take to get a new one.
If you've had no problems with the store in the past, then you probably won't have any problems now. I would personally wait, but I like to have new, especially with something like this.
the only worry I have really is that I buy it then when it does red ring (ok, if it does) then I won't be able to get it replaced since it's not from like Gamestop. Would the 3 year warranty from MS hold up?

MS doesn't even check the time remaining on a warranty right now. You just say that you have a red ring and they tell you to ship it back to them. It's really easy.

This is just for red ring issues, though; anything else is only covered for 1 year (and if it's used they'll likely use the manufacturing date)
also, if you're buying from a store (vs creepy stranger from the internet) you may be able to purchase an additional warranty, or at least ask them what their guarantee is on it
