360 - Xbox 360 players should add PA GTA IV to their buddy list if they want to play online with people from Penny-Arcade with ease and without filling up their friends list. If PA GTA IV's friends list is full and you didn't get accepted in time, keep trying. There will be inevitable cleanings due to inactivity, so spots will eventually open up. In the meantime, send friend requests to as many people who are playing as you can from the list below, so you'll still be able to get invited and play with us.

If you are going to be inactive for a long period of time, such as your system red ringing or other concerns, don't worry. Send a private message to PA GTA IV (you can do it quickly through http://live.xbox.com) or Dashui on these forums and you'll be safe.

There is also a UK profile, PA GTA IV UK. Please send a friend request only if you're in the UK. You can be both on the main list, PA GTA IV, and the UK list. However, I don't recommend people start making a PA profile for different regions. That will cause disorganization and a fracture. There shouldn't be a need for more than the primary profile, and as stated above, inactivity will be monitored and more room should open up (but don't fear that it'll be too strict, because it won't; just log on and play every now and then!).

How does it play?

GTA IV takes place in a redesigned Liberty City (Grand Theft Auto, Grand Theft Auto III, Grand Theft Auto Advance, Grand Theft Auto: Liberty City Stories). Four boroughs of NYC are represented, as is New Jersey. "Broker" is Brooklyn, Queens is "Dukes", the Bronx is "Bohan", Manhattan is "Algonquin", and New Jersey is "Alderney."

Combat has changed from previous 3D GTA games, and now has a Gears of War-like cover system, and Crackdown-like lock-on/free aiming hybrid targeting.

Feature list brought to you by bruin:

- The location will be Liberty City, a completely retooled and more realistic, denser version.

- There will be five boroughs: Dukes (Queens), Bohan (the Bronx), Algonquin (Manhattan), Broker (Brooklyn), and Alderney (New Jersey). The player starts the game in Broker.

- You can no longer simply walk up to a car and jack it, or go to Pay and Spray to remove your wanted level. Some cars need to be broken into via the window and hot wired, older cars may stall, and you need to evade the police's line of sight.

- While the game is not as big as San Andreas, it has more detail and less wasted space.

- The police system has been entirely retooled. You will not instantly become wanted whenever you commit a crime, even in public. If there are no cops around, and someone sees you, they will have to notify the police. When the police are notified, a circular search area will appear on your radar. If you are outside of this area the cops will not be able to find you unless you commit another crime. If you are spotted in the circular area, the police will follow you to that location.

- Since Pay and Spray isn't an effective way of alluding the police, you must use other ways to get rid of wanted level: changing your clothes (especially if they are bloody); switching cars to confuse the police; running into someone's house, out the back, and on to their fire escape, among other things.

- Many interiors are fully decorated and have been given a much bigger emphasis and importance.

- While the game does not have planes, it does have helicopters.

- Holding down the fire trigger half-way will allow you to free aim your weapon, while holding it down completely will lock on to the nearest enemy.

- Niko has a cell phone. With the cell phone, you can call any number that's in the game, including mission leads, various characters, 911, and more. You access multi-player through your phone.

- Car trunks are now usable. You can put bodies and weapons into car trunks.

- Missions have been completely retooled. You won't have a giant arrow over someone's head if they are your target. For example, if you have to kill a target, but he's surrounded by a group of people, you may not know who he is. You can handle this in multiple ways. You can find out his phone number, call him up, see if he responds, and kill him; or you can simply go up to the entire group and kill all of them. The choice is up to you. Of course, if you do the latter, your boss may be upset with you...

- Depending on how well and what you do during missions, you can form relationships with your bosses and clients. If you do well, you will have a good relationship.

- Maintaining character relationships can result in specific rewards. Little Jacob is the man who sells you weapons. Your relationship is maintained through phone contact and loyalty. A relationship with a lawyer can help remove your wanted level with a phone call, for example.

- Trip skip feature from Vice City and Vice City Stories is back. Now you can even use cabs to drive you pretty much anywhere you want. You can skip the cab ride and get to the destination quicker for a cost, or you can view the ride from the first person and enjoy the trip.

- Ammunation is not a good supply for weapons any more. Having good relationships will get you access to more and better weapons.

- There is more emphasis on hand to hand combat in GTA IV.

- You should beware night time in certain burroughs, as you may get jumped by random gangsters and the freaks of Liberty. You can get robbed.

- There is now a GPS.

- The game now has a cover system.

- You can have girlfriends in the game. You can meet women through the internet for blind dates. They will react to how you act, where you take them, and even what you wear. Some are more clingy than others. For example, one may constantly send you text messages. If you ignore her, you could upset her.

- The internet is a feature in the game. You can use it to browse for information, view and send e-mail, and even setup blind dates.

- There will be no turf wars.

- You can now use an ATM or go to the bank to deposit or withdraw funds.

- You can now shoot different body parts and your victim will react realistically depending where he has been hit.

- Rockstar will use the Euphoria Engine, known from Star Wars: The Force Unleashed. It will power much of the physics in the game.

- Pedestrians have a memory. They remember your face when they saw you doing a criminal act and run away in terror whenever they see you again.

- The multiplayer will be activated via the cell phone. There are 15 game modes with up to 16 players online.

- Two minutes equals one hour in-game.

- There will be no seasons in the game.

- Every cop car has a working computer, which allows you to search for any criminal in the city, find his where abouts, and any thing remotely related to him or her.

- You can call the police, ambulance, and other services via 911. You can use this to escape from a heated battle or even clear out a police station.

Reviews

Note: Grand Theft Auto IV hasn't been reviewed based on platform, therefore there's no need to list both PS3 and 360 reviews from the same network. These networks, such as Gamespy and IGN, essentially copy and paste their review for each platform, tweaking a word here or there. Both versions of the game are mostly equal, so buy the game on the platform your friends are for the great multiplayer or based on your controller preferences.

WKTT Radio
WKTT Radio is a Conservative talk radio station located in Dukes. One of their top shows is the Richard Bastion show, who is a parody of right-wing talk show hosts such as Rush Limbaugh and Michael Savage.
In a Grand Theft Auto first, series fans could call in to the Rockstar offices and have their opinions on current issues recorded and go in the run to have it placed on the station in the final game. Rockstar Games announced this on 14 July 2007 and opened a website—WKTTRadio.com—with all the details needed to participate. This website now redirects to the WKTT page on the official GTA IV site.

All songs tagged "ZiT" will be stored here, available for preview and purchase at Amazon's going rate of $.89-$.99 per track. Best of all, those MP3s are free of the Digital Rights Management (DRM) limitations imposed on files downloaded through Apple's iTunes store and thus can be imported into any computer or digital device with no constraints.

Needless to say, record execs are thrilled at the prospect of using GTA IV's radio to reach millions of ears and, in turn, wallets.

"Music has long played an integral part of the game playing experience," said Ronn Werre, EVP, EMI Music's Sales, Licensing and Synchronization unit. "We think giving players the ability to identify and buy their favorite tracks from Grand Theft Auto IV's popular radio stations is a great new music discovery tool for fans and an innovative new revenue stream for artists."

The recent success of downloadable music in other games gives credence to ZiT's ambitious dreams. In a mere three months, owners of MTV Games' hit music game Rock Band have downloaded over 6 million songs. At roughly $2 apiece, that's a hefty source of post-launch revenue.

None of those tracks, however, are accessible outside the game, and that's where GTA IV's model really takes off. Rockstar has boldly proclaimed that GTA IV's soundtrack is "the biggest in the history of entertainment," and with over 150 tracks, we're not prone to argue. In addition to high-profile tunes from popular artists, the developers are aiming for music geeks by handpicking rare, hard-to-find songs such as Electrick Funk's 12-inch treasure "On A Journey" and Elton John's "Street Kids" off his relatively unheralded Rock of the Westies. Some artists have even contributed brand new songs written exclusively for the game, including "Vagabond (Liberty City Mix)" by the Greenskeepers and "War is Necessary" from iconic rapper Nas.

It is a tough choice. I actually reloaded a save and lost an entire morning of play to go back to that decision.

They are both scum, but I considered Francis to be more scum than Derrick. Derrick, while a bit misguided, was honest. He got along well enough with his brothers, too. Francis, on the other hand, was a crooked cop, threatened Niko, and everyone hated him. When I reloaded my save, I had to go back through that boating mission with Derrick. He died and I had to redo it. This time, there was an entirely different conversation. In it, Derrick postulated that it was Francis who sent these man after him. And Hell, Francis did come to you to kill his own brother, which is another bad mark against him. Derrick just wants you to defend him.

People were complaining about a lack of quick weapon switching before; it's left bumper + directional pad on the 360 (or one of the bumpers, anyway). It mentions it in one of the missions. Despite that, I still just use the left/right on the d-pad.

Edit: Oh yeah, what I like the most about Niko is how low key he is. Everyone he meets gives him attitude and makes some sort of threat, and he just brushes it off with no attitude. Then when they really piss him off, he fucks up their whole world with incredible passion.

Some things:

1. Probably should change the radio stations stuff in the OP, as it is pretty inaccurate.

2. DLC should be a delorean. And when you hit 88 mph you can replay any mission you want (and see some serious shit.) Just don't fail! or you create a paradox and then ruin liberty city.

3. Cops N Crooks. Heavy traffic. We're on a bridge above the escape boat and decide to just jump into the water, the boss (bill cosby) get's out of the passenger side and in slow motion i see a car come and he gets hit and flips over the hood. FAIL. Man that car must have been going pretty fast. I laughed for a good 2 minutes, had to turn off my mic

First you kidnap her; she's grappling at the wheel, you slap her out cold. And later you need to take a picture of her, so you go up to this ratty apartment with her all tied up and gagged, crying. You slap her in the face to get her to look up at you ("Hey, you forget about me, bitch?"), all the while she's crying and moaning. It's just a little too serious, I don't know.

Alright, so which quest line advances the story? I don't want to miss out on anything. Michelle spoiler and onwards, I guess.

Michelle called you up soon after opening up the second island, if I recall correctly. The mission shows up as Unknown Contact near Star Junction. I haven't touched that yet. I've pretty much done all the McReary quests, including Francis, Packie, and Derrick. I'm 60% through Gerry's. He's in prison and I kidnapped that girl, as the above spoiler mentions. I also did all of Ray's missions, and now he sent me a message asking to meet with him and Phil Bell.

Apparently the people I chase have an affinity to being hit by cars. 2 missions so far have had that happen. One was on foot, but he got up and kept running. This guy on a bike crashed into a car/got hit by one when I was chasing him for the mission. All I had to do was run him over, then.

God I agree. I love MP so much when it's working correct;y. As it stands, I can get one good game going (sometimes ) and then it empties out. and everyone loses motivation.
