id Software today announced that it has begun production on Doom 4, and is now in the process of expanding its internal team of developers to work on the shooter sequel.

"Doom is part of the id Software DNA and demands the greatest talent and brightest minds in the industry to bring the next installment of our flagship franchise to Earth," said id Software CEO Todd Hollenshead in a press release.

"It's critical for id Software to have the best creative minds in-house to develop games that meet the standards synonymous with our titles."

The company is currently accepting applications to fill job openings covering roles such as producer, lead designer, and lead animator, among others.

Though no further details on the game were released, the studio will likely make use of its new id Tech 5 engine for the project.

Ahahahaha. If you wanted news on The Darkness sequel I'm afraid you came to the wrong place. This is about a different type of darkness.

I think this is good news upon good news. As much shit as D3 has received since coming out, there's no way id has turned a deaf ear to it all. I fully expect Doom 4 to be free of any complaint-worthy issues, and to be the best game ever made.

I wonder if they will take the same approach as Doom 3 with the slower pace and more horror aspects. Or will they look at the older gameplay mechanics?

Thought this was going to be about the sequel to The Darkness, which I believe I read was being made. Either way, I'm interested to see if id learned from the Doom 3 mistakes (MONSTER CLOSET++)

This is kinda good news. Except that I fucking hate you XoB. :)

I hope it's not all the stupid scares that's popular in Doom3, you know where the fucking imps come out of the stairs and the "inconspicuous" closet door. Too predictable.

I'd be cool with it if I could shoot the monster closets first.

You know, just blast a shotgun round into every door and cupboard I see and listen for pained screams and howls of inhuman terror and confusion.

(Man, these games stopped being scary the day I realized that the player character is the baddest monster of them all.)

Its a rock PC gaming was built on. Doom 3 was great, it was just overhyped. It was a mid 80% game and thats decent.

Plus at the time it was bleeding edge graphically.

If Doom 4 is on id tech 5, which i guarantee it will be, then that engine already has 2 games in the pipeline. Which is also good, id make great game engines but just dont have the support.

My hope is that they will have learned from the Doom 3 criticism and will create a game more like the in-between of Doom 2 and 3. Doom 2 was great, but I have a feeling that it would feel contrived and phoney without the nostalgia backing it up. Doom 3 also felt contrived, but went for a horror rather than "big area, lots of monsters, kill then and don't die." So, maybe a mix, without so many monster closets! /ramble

So, is it wrong that I kind hope that Doom 4 and DNF will come out at about the same time, and both be magical, allowing me to relive some of my happiest grade/highschool gaming years?

I am a HUGE Doom fan. I just need it to be a little more classic. Running 100 miles an hour and devastating thousands of demons is what I crave.

I still play 1 and 2 fairly often these days. I actually have friends I can trick into deathmatching with me. Not a good proposition for them.

I want a game that isn't trying to do horror the way doom 3 did, instead it's more like Doom 2's bone crunching atmosphere - doesn't have to have a plot or cutscenes or even great AI, I just want lots of monsters and a double barreled shotgun, and the run and gun style gameplay that made the first two games so much fun.

DOOM and DOOM 2 are two of the games that got me into gaming in the first place. I feel amazingly old hearing that people are seeing them for the first time on XBLA.

*sigh* I'll probably end up upgrading my PC and buying this, just like I did for DOOM 3.

I really liked Doom 3 (still play it every now and then on my 360 and PC). I never really had a problem with the "monster closets" or flashlight issues since I thought it added a lot to the atmosphere and horror elements of the game. I'm stoked as hell at the prospect of id making another Doom.

I'm just glad we will see more than one id game every four years. Also this will be pretty interesting, since we now have 3 internal teams working on 3 separate games (RAGE, QuakeArenaNext [i.e. not Quake Live same team though], Doom4 now). All id games have a distinct feel to them movement/physics wise, which any id fan can safely say no other game can successfully duplicate. So to play them will be interesting because we may see the differences in between the 3 teams on how the game feels.

Yeah...I must of pressed the refresh button like 5 times before I realised it was a joke...I'm an idiot. The OP is evil to. On another note I look forward to this game, I picked up doom 3 day 1 with a friend and he brought his system to my house and all we did was play that, it was sweet. I enjoyed the game

Also for the guy a few posts up, the expansion was okay, I didn't enjoy as much as the orignal but t'was fun. Added the double barreled shotgun for nostalgia's sake and acutally it rocked ass. It would of been well worth the 5 bucks.

I don't know... I'll withhold judgment till there's some more information. All a Doom game needs to do is let you shoot hordes of shit with excessive fucking weapons. They can't possibly mess that up twice.
