Borked laptop battery?

Recently my laptop has been acting oddly, dropping the wireless connection for a moment and when it comes back absolutley refusing to accept that it is connected to the internet. Nothing works, instant messengers, internet explorer, firefox, windows update, whatever. This persists until you restart the computer.

Which leads to oddity two, instead of restarting it just shuts down and sits there off. Then when I hit the power button it lights up, hard drive starts..whirs for a second and then goes dark again without the screen lighting up. Sometimes, eventually, if you keep on pressing power it'll go through and power up. However removing the battery and running straight from the wall it starts up just fine. Also haven't had the wireless connection cut out yet, but it is a random occurance, so we'll see.

I think the wireles connection issue popped up after I used the laptop to host an adhoc internet sharing network to a wired connection at a hotel room, so my friend could browse as well. Not sure if that may be part of it. The laptop is an HP pavilion.

So, completley unrelated problems? Or could the battery be the root of the issues?

Many wireless providers (campus, etc) don't like shared connections, so that may be why that's screwing up.

How long did you have your laptop / that battery? Depending on its age, and usage patterns - do you keep your laptop plugged in all the time? does it run hot often? etc, the battery's effective lifespan can decrease, which causes problems with the current and things like that.

This is at home, connected to our linksys wireless router, the shared connection was only temporary at a hotel.

Had the laptop just over 3 months, runs somewhat hot, let it sleep unplugged overnight, usually have it plugged in during use.
