I have a 99 Civic, Blue book value is maybe $4k or so. I currently pay about $500/6-months with comprehensive and collision coverage. Should I cancel both or maybe increase the deductible to the max for them? I get different responses from everyone, but I would like to save a little money. I don't want to reduce liability, by the way.
It's likely illegal (and I'd say unethical) to cancel the collision. You probably don't need the comprehensive. If you have a loan on the car make sure they don't mandate you to carry it though.
Edit: Collision is for when you hit somebody and they sue you. Comprehensive is for when you're driving and some random debris hits your car and inflicts damage.

I think you are confusing collision with liability. Liability insurance is there to cover damages you cause to other vehicles/property/people. Collision covers your car in the event that you cause an accident. Comprehensive covers you if debris hits your car, or the other driver drives off.

You are getting screwed on rates, if you have no tickets on your record. I have comprehensive on my '01 Audi A4 and I pay just a tiny bit more than you.

Well it varies quite a bit by age and area, but that definitely seems high. I have comprehensive w/gap and a $250 deductible for my 07 Civic Hybrid and my wife's 03 Elantra and we're paying roughly $550 every 6 months.

Yea, it appears your right. I was combining liability and collision in my head.
A 10 year-old car? Personally, I wouldn't have collision or comprehensive on that. I mean, it's old enough that the amount you're paying for that coverage is nearly eclipsing the value of the car.

So i looked up some rates online and I can't seem to get much below $480 at best. I have no tickets, but Civics are fairly pricey cars. I was wrong about the value; the trade-in is closer to $5k. I don't really want to switch to John B. McScammington's discount car insurance, and I've had decent service with State Farm for a while now. I don't mind $20 extra; if it was $50-$100 then I might consider changing. Anything I'm doing wrong?
I have the exact same coverage levels as when we got the car in 99. I never thought to change it, so right now it's like $500 deductible for collision and $250 for comprehensive.
Talk to your insurance agent. That's what they're there for.
What state are you in, BTW? Those are, like, New Jersey car insurance rates, there.
I would say look into getting your comprehensive deductible raised to $500, but I'll be damned if I don't really wish I had a comprehensive deductible of $250 right now on my 1990 Civic. :x
Where in Texas? You're going to get a better deal on comprehensive/collision in Bumfuck than you are someplace like Houston or Dallas/Ft. Worth.
I'm in Houston. If it matters, I'm in the city proper, not in the suburbs.
Can I just ask the agent, "Hey, look, I think your rates are too high? Can you reduce them?" It's in their interest to keep my rates high, right?
It's possible they're charging you too much, you can ask them to re-evaluate (I did at the beginning of this year, when a speeding ticket dropped off my record, and saved a shitload).
You can also look into reducing the amount of insurance you're carrying. For instance, you really don't need $1 million worth of liability, or $250,000 in comprehensive/collision. If you're carrying that, drop it.
