Forgotten Hope two. It's an awesome, epic, realistic, slow-paced, and utterly fantastic BF2 mod. Volyu introduced me to this some time ago with a thread but I missed the radness, and, after booting this shit up again, I'd like to see if I can convince some of you douchebags to play this sweet mod with me.

It focuses entirely on the Africa campaign, giving you the option of being either British or German. It functions via the same basic system as all Battlefield games, with an emphasis on tank combat and realism. I admit it can be difficult to learn at first, but after a few rounds, I promise you will enjoy this mod more than most of the other shooters available right now.

There's a decent map rotation, and I've been playing on the hslan server, since it's usually the only one with people on it, and usually 25-60 of them. It's absolutely awesome. I have grown fond of the Recon class with it's rifle and incredibly useful binoculars, but all of my attempts to take the fight to the jerries in vehicles have more less ended with me getting exploded in some spectacular way. The fighting is always super intense and the level design pays incredible attention to detail, particularly in the small, close, urban fights.

We should play. I will maintain a nice little list of anyone who is down and also here are some pretty screenshots.

You can download it here, at www.forgottenhope.bf1942files.com

I'm not sure how many versions away from realease it currently is, but I'd characterize it as anything but stripped down. All the classes are fully featured, there is a pretty large variety of vehicles, they integrated a lot of neat features. I think the only complaint I'd make is that there are only two guns available to each side, though they change from map-to map sometimes.

Lots of neat stuff. More content then most modifications, by all means.

I heard from some players that they're releasing a content update sometime soon. I agree that more weapons would be idea, hopefully they're adding those later on.

But if you truly yearn for bazookas, there are plenty of artillery positions on pretty much every map that can be satisfying to man.

Oh, yeah. There are also 88's and Machineguns, but they have like 15-20 slots per team and can only be deployed lying down. I completely forgot about them.

Mostly because the anti-tank rifles aren't that effective for killing tanks, but they sure do make for satisfying infantry kills.

Haha they still haven't done anything but Africa after how many years?

Guys that are interested in FH2 should also look at this. It's a monthly subscription, but if you have a hardon for realism it is awesome. They seem to be leaning away from their ridiculously time consuming setup that they used to have for infantry and tanks, but it's still not too great. The flying in it is awesome though.

I played WWII online back in 2004 for a few weeks. I remember how all the buildings had 2d walls.

It was actually a decent game, but it's not 'fun' in the same sense that FH2 is. It's much, much, lamer.

Once you actually know what you're doing it's a shitload more fun. Knowing one of the top 10 tankers and top 50 pilots when I was learning was pretty handy, too. And as I said before, planes are a shitload more fun than anything else. It can be one of the most frustrating games in existence though, oh god the ragequits. They're still making a heap of improvements to the game, it looks a hell of a lot better than it did, but having it play well with so many people around is always going to require it to have crappy graphics in relation to other modern games.

I still have the mod installed, might be up for some playing later this week or something. I'd totally be down to help people train with the game, we'll just get on vent and grab an empty server and have at it.

I played the first Forgotten Hope for like 2 years, loved every minute of it. Forgotten Hope 2 is awesome, and they're coming out with a patch that will finalize the North Africa theater, fixing some issues and adding new maps and shit.

They've already begun work on the Western European theater, so expect that sometime in the coming months.

The original Forgotten Hope had like 40 maps, all theaters, so don't expect this mod to "finish" any time soon.

    PS, Fandy, I love you.

Edit: Also duders if you do install the mod be sure to adjust your graphics so that you can play with a good framerate while also having your draw distance completely maxed out. You need the full draw distance because tanks have realistic ballistics (hell, so do the rifles and shit) so they engage at long distances. Nothing sucks more than getting shot by something you can't see, so trust me, this is something you'll want to do.

Edit 2: And pay attention to your God-damned minimap. Don't expect any magical blue or red names to pop over your enemies. Learn to tell the uniforms and tanks apart or you'll kill teammates.

I may take you up on this because the only reason I even owned BF2 was in anticipation for FH2. FH was so good but I didn't get in until around 0.6 so the lack of content and steeper learning curve has made FH2 tough to get in to.

Well the steeper curve I am talking about may be just the differences between BF and BF2. I never played BF2 (a buddy gave it to me for free because it didn't run on his computer) and it literally sat on my shelf until FH2 came out. Having no one to really play with and missing a lot of the content FH 0.7 had to offer it was tough for me to get into.

I know the game is going to be fucking amazing it just sucks how slow the development has moved.

The learning curve in relation to, like, basic infantry combat and vehicle usage is pretty easy. But as to flying, I still can't do it - though I could never fly in BF games, and the planes control a lot like the ones from 1942.

As far as tanks, what Volyu said about them functioning realistically is pretty accurate. There are three types of ammunition available for the main cannon, each useful in a different situation. You have to choose your ammunition carefully and generally stop to site your shot, etc, making tank combat precise and exciting.

Planes play a pretty important role and look as if they'd be fun as hell to pilot. I just suck at that sort of thing.

Do you have a joystick? BF flying wasn't hard if you had a decent stick and if you don't you are really missing out. The best thing about FH really was the air combat. Firing rockets from P-38s, IL-2's, and Typhoons was so great. Also that Stuka variant with the twin 37mm flak cannons was the shit.

    No joystick.

Maybe thats why all of my flights end with me banking sharply and being unable to recover, and thus crashing into a dune or something. The firefights look really intense from the ground, though, planes all swooping around, strafing infantry, dropping bombs and shit.

For those of you who remember what Battlefield 1942 looked like, the trailer for the first Forgotten Hope can be viewed here. They took that decent game and modded the hell out of it, adding tons of vehicles, maps, and features. Features like the grass EA and Dice said was impossible. Features like push/progressive conquest maps, tank sights, and enhanced historically accurate graphics.

But enough of that jazz, here's the trailer for Forgotten Hope 2, showcasing the North Africa theater.
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oMlLp1WGF7Y

Plenty of gameplay videos on youtube where you can watch stuff like tank combat, infantry combat, and so on.

And this is a pretty hilarious of some infantry combat narrated by some crazy British dude.

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XS2Suf45C-g

The way he rejoices when he makes a great shot is hilarious.
