This is against the Terms of Use you signed up to when you created your account. I'm also fairly sure it's illegal, as the account is not your property, it's Blizzard's.

    EDIT: Here we are:
    8. Ownership/Selling of the Account or Virtual Items.
Blizzard does not recognize the transfer of Accounts. You may not purchase, sell, gift or trade any Account, or offer to purchase, sell, gift or trade any Account, and any such attempt shall be null and void. Blizzard owns, has licensed, or otherwise has rights to all of the content that appears in the Program. You agree that you have no right or title in or to any such content, including the virtual goods or currency appearing or originating in the Game, or any other attributes associated with the Account or stored on the Service. Blizzard does not recognize any virtual property transfers executed outside of the Game or the purported sale, gift or trade in the "real world" of anything related to the Game. Accordingly, you may not sell items for "real" money or otherwise exchange items for value outside of the Game.

Whether it is indeed illegal is hard to say, but it is against the forum policy to have such discussions here on this board.

From the MMO subforum rulethread (i expect it applies here aswell):
    Don't break that EULA,that achy-breaky EULA.
If it is against your MMO's End Users License Agreement, like selling your characters or running independent servers, don't post about it here. What is illegal in your game is also illegal here.

EDIT: Wrote forum police by mistake, was supposed to be forum policy :P.

No, it's easy to say, it's not illegal, it's just against the rules of the game, which holds up here. Blizzard isn't going to call the feds on you, they'll just cancel your account.

At one point in time I was in the same position and researched it. There is a guide online from someone who does it professionally, so just try googling for some keywords. I decided it is not worth the hassle, because there is no professional fool proof way to do it. There are quit a few forums around where people trade/sell their accounts, but unless you have some top notch characters it is not really worth the risk of getting scammed. The only way it could work is if you know someone locally that you could meet to do the transaction in person.

Also, he isn't advertising his character here, simply seeking advice on the matter so I don't think he should be apprehended for it. And if he is breaking the Blizzard EULA, well, I don't think he cares about it if he is quitting WoW.
