Broken/Damaged 360 - Please Help

It hasn't been a good month for my hardware.

First my PSP screen cracked.

Now my 360 is apparently having issues.

I have a friend back home in the US that is having problems finding work. He expressed his desire to play GTA IV but couldn't justify the purchase of a new system and the game while unemployed. Since I bought GTA IV for my PS3 and haven't even turned on my 360 since I finished Mass Effect, I offered to loan it to him if he would pay for the shipping. I sent it USPS because it was the cheapest way to go, and paid money to insure the 360.

He sent me an email today, and told me that the 360 works, but when he turns it on with the HDD attached he gets an error code of E-68. There were no problems prior to shipping, so now I need to know what to do with the system. He's happy with it as is, because he said he'll just buy a memory card to play GTA IV and has no intention of playing anything else.

However, one day I would like to use my 360 again, with the hard drive. The system was purchased in December, so what kind of warranty am I entitled to? Am I eligible to make an insurance claim? One potential issue is that I bought the system here on a military base in Korea. He doesn't have access to military bases in the US so he can't go through the same store. How can I get my 360 working again?

The first thing I would do is call Xbox support and see what they can do for you (1-800-4MY-XBOX). If you purchased the system in December it should still be covered by warranty, but I couldn't tell you exactly what it does and does not cover.

Failing that, file an insurance claim with the postal service. Be warned, though, as dealing with the USPS can be a bitch. If Microsoft can handle the problem, life will be much easier.

I'll have to email their support. 800 numbers don't work overseas. Damn.

The Xbox support contact page lists this as an international direct dial number: 425-635-7180
I don't know exactly what that means, but in any case I find it hard to believe that MS wouldn't have phone support for international customers.

I saw the number but the hours are basically the middle of the night/early morning here.

If you can't get any repairs for the hard drive, you could borrow someone else's to test that it's just your hard drive that's the problem and not the console itself; that way you know if you have to buy a new HDD or get the console repaired.
