Ways to fake sick

I've got a mild cold, but not enough to get me out of school. I desperately need a day off to catch up on some work, but my parents are notoriously frugal about the sick days.

What are some simple ways that I can convince them? Stomach stuff is ineffectual, and they have one of those fancy thermometers that can take your temperature from your ear in like half a second, so keep these in mind.

migraine? basically say that your entire fucking head feels like it's going to explode, and feign aversion to light sources - especially natural light

impossible to prove. i use to use this excuse all the time... never mind that this was actually the truth, it still worked. i must have skipped half of an entire school year doing that.

edit: this only gets you off the hook for one day, though.

A lot of people will tell you a good phony fever is a dead lock. But if you've got a nervous mother, that could wind up with a trip to the doctor's office. That's worse then school.

Movie quotes aside, one time I made myself throw up to get out of school so maybe you could try that? It really sucks but it worked for me the one time I was desperate enough.

Inducing vomiting really doesn't sound like a good idea.

Well if i'm not mistaken the school year is just about over.

Why not actually tell them the truth? You're falling behind in your studies and the day would really help to get you back on track. You have the opportunity to use the day and going to school would do more harm scholastically than good. It could be a valid alternative if you can actually let them know where you are falling behind and why.

Not for Australia, we're not even halfway, and they already know I'm behind.

Migraine is probably the most effective non detectable way to fake illness to get out of something. The good thing about it is that it can resolve itself within a few hours if you can't keep up the facade all day, and genuinely need to get some work done. Some other ideas include ear ache, or tooth ache (be careful with this one, it can land you at the dentists!)

Why don't you tell your Mum & Dad the truth? That you just need to catch up on work and you're being bombarded at school. I am sure if you put on the waterworks and could prove the mountain of work that you need to do that they would be receptive.

    *removed illegal advice*

Of course, I highly recomend the whole "Truth" angle in this case. It's a lot less likely to get you on the shit list with your parents.

Be up-front and truthful with your parents.

Just tell them "If I had a long period of time, maybe one day, I could make up a lot of ground and get close to or even current on my work. In exchange, I will accept some extra chores/some minor or moderate punishment/give up some privlieges as payment for said day." They're suspecting you want a day off so you can laze around. You have to convince them you won't, and then follw through.

How do you get to school? I mean, do you drive yourself to school, or take the bus, rides from friends?

If you drive yourself, it should be a simple matter to simply go somewhere else for the day and catch up on your shit there. Say a public library or something.

Recommending truancy seems like a...let's just say a terrible idea.

You could man up and go to school. Do the catch-up work during your lunch break and after you get home.

As a school teacher, I can tell you that it is an effective tactic to talk to teachers about your work. Students who wait until deadlines to ask for extensions are, naturally, seen with little pity. However, when I am approached by a student ahead of time, especially one that seems sincere about doing the work to a high quality, I am always inclined to give extensions.

The goal, after all, of any educator is to teach a set of skills as well as responsibility for work. Demonstrate these to your teachers. Arrange meetings with them, after class or school, informing them you are behind but wish to catch up, and maintain a strong presence in the classroom. Most students who fall behind attempt to AVOID contact with the teacher, thinking this is somehow preferred, when it in fact only makes it easier for the teacher to assume the student does not care.

Your school may even have accommodations to help you catch up. I know my school has several after school tutoring programs for just the scenario you describe.

In short, the key to this problem is not to further delay, but to immediately begin tackling what you have in front of you.

Either man up and go to school, or tell your parents why you need a day off (which I suspect is because you have something due today that, rather than pull an all-nighter to finish, you decided to try to fake it today).
