Mobile radar speed display camera police...thing?

Alright so one of these things is posted just a few houses down from where I live in the middle of my neighborhood. Whenever you pass by it it flashes and displays your current speed. So my question is if the flash is just related to the radar function or if the flash has any camera functionality.

I mean it's neat and all but it would be fun to see how accurate my speedometer is but i'd rather not risk a ticket.

I think the flash is from a camera. I have one near me that never flashes but tells you how fast you are driving.

By "it flashes," he means the number flashes. Usually if you're going over the speed limit.

No, those are not speed cameras.

Probably one of the neighbors complained about people driving to fast down the street. Instead of posting a cop there for several days they just dropped of one of those units to remind everyone of the speed limit in the area. After a week or two it will probably disappear.

Or it stays there and even the middle aged women you know admit to having fun seeing how fast they can blow past it.

    I don't think these things have the intended effect . . .

Speed cameras are usually mounted on poles or attached to a stationary van.

I found that tilting it doesn't work very well, and once I started jerking it, I got much better results.

They use those things on base all the time. The goal is to slow people down, not to bust them. They actually work incredibly well at the intended effect.

Too many people think they can actually send tickets. Which is the only reason they have any "positive" effect.

Yeah I didn't realize they didn't have a camera on them. :P I never really wanted to risk finding out, just like the OP.

I've seen similar ones that are a lot bigger and branded with state trooper decals. Any word on whether or not those have cameras in them? I suppose it would probably vary state to state.

I've seen some with "Video enabled" or something similar stenciled on the side, but upon closer inspection didn't have a camera.

Like the the 'cameras' on school buses, it's there to scare you. You don't really know, so it's better to play it safe.

Some school buses do have cameras on them.

If you already have an officer, why is there a need for a big radar and display?

As someone mentioned above, some people are stupid and like to blow past it way above the speed limit to make it flash a high number.

Its basically baiting people into getting speeding tickets.

LOL SO VERY FUNNY AND COMPLETELY UNPREDICTABLE LOL LOL LOL

Anyhow, you're not supposed to be speeding so if you're following the law, why worry? Even if there's no camera, the presence of a fancy thing that tells you how fast you're going (as if your speedometer doesn't already) isn't a good excuse to go two or three times the speed limit. It's still dangerous and stupid whether the sign is there or not, dumbass.
