Giant Animal Mechs! - Zoids Assault from Atlus (360 Strategy/RPG)
Wow, Atlus is really pushing the XBox 360 for Strategy/RPGs: this is the third one they have planned for this year.
"Dear Atlus Faithful,
Beasts of Steel. Diverse battlegrounds. An intense covert military campaign in the middle of a tense cold war. Advanced tactics including support fire and electromagnetic pulse systems. Tons of customization and upgrade options, including melee weapons, rockets, rifles, machine guns, shotguns, cannons, and more.
Zoids Assault, a new and decidedly original strategy RPG take on the long-running Zoids series, brings all of the above and more to the Xbox 360® this August."
Interesting, although after playing the Operation Darkness demo, I'm going to be very wary of SRPGs on the 360. Aren't they also releasing another SRPG that isn't OD or Zoids?

God dammnit Zoids. I was free. No more watching the addictive anime no more importing models, no more playing that lame ass GC title that was pretty okay.

I kinda wish this was more of an action/strategy game with collecting parts and winning matches with online multiplayer. Like the show.
But no. Its a S-RPG. I'm still happy though. Let the wallet rape continue.

I've never gotten into Zoids. And this game isn't going to be the thing that does get me into it. It looks really dull and bland and boring. Which reminds me of the Operation Darkness demo they put out...

You just have to get into the back story=
German Space Colonists find a world inhabited my living machines. They then modifiy them for use in battle.
there is nothing not awesome about that setting.

As long as atlus doesn't fuck this up, I will be pleased.

Modified for really boring battle apparently. I guess SRW games have spoiled me. I just can't watch a little machine gun fire off a few rounds, or a tank gun blast the side of a robot. I need crazy awesome animations with ridiculous attacks.
I'll still look into it, because I strive to like anything with giant robots

So there I am, playing Zoids Legacy on my DS, minding my own business, when I slip on a banana peel and end up ordering the GC Freeloader along with the Zoids GC fighting game from PlayAsia.
Yeah, the thing that bugs me about that trailer is how stiff and rigid the motion is. I know it's a strategy RPG, but zoids are known for, you know, moving and stuff while fighting. I'd imagine zoids being more suited for an RTS or squad-based action RPG kind of thing.
I like giant robots and all, but like Operation Darkness I'm gonna wait to hear how it is.

I remember that during my school years that show used to be on uncomfortablely early in the morning, yet I'd still get up and watch it.
The GBA game is pretty cool. The translation is a bit clumsy at times, but it's effectively a JRPG where you can build your own bots, upgrade them, paint them and stick huge weapons on them, so it's all good.
Zoids Assault is not the regular, brightly-colored Zoids you know and love. It's a more "realistic" (if you can call giant liger-shaped mechs that) take on the franchise. More like a Front Mission.

Bleh, If there is no color/fun time with it I may become disappointed already with this title. Zoids should never venture towards realism. That just kills it.

Which I think is a shitty direction for them to take. Why not make this super over the top like the shows are? As said above, action packed super robot wars style attacks are way more interesting then "50 Cal Machine Gun Burst for 10 damage"
Last time I checked if I wanted to play a mech game like Front Mission.. I'd play Front Mission..

When things like this try to be too serious, it always fucks shit up. Case in point- Mechassault 2. I'm still sore over that game. They fucked that one up so badly. I'm still annoyed at how it turned out.

fixd :P
Were there multiple Zoid anime series? I seem to remember vast differences in the cast and overall plots in some of the episodes. I remember one that seemed to have a largely military focus and another where a teenager and his friends traveled around fighting in some sort of tournament.
Or quite possibly I'm just crossing my Giant Robot Animes.
Ugh, well that'd explain it I guess. I suprised Bandai wasn't behind it. I always wondering why it seemed so disjointed.
From what I can tell I enjoyed the mishmash of Chaotic Century and Guardian Force I was able to see and was New Century Zero was the one that annoyed me.
Giant animal-bots for warfare? Awesome. Giant animal-bots acting as Pokemon? Less awesome.
Wonder if I can find them cheap on DVD. I need something to tide me over until Avatar Season 3 comes out.
Anyways back to the game I think I might pick this up. I always thought a Zoids game could be fun and I'm a sucker for srpgs.
Looks like it could be good. I enjoyed Front Mission 3 a lot, it just started slow (like a lot of rpgs) but never really picked up the pace. But the customization of the game was a lot of fun.
I've been waiting years for a good srpg to be honest. The last one I really enjoyed was FFtactics for the PSX. It's one of my favorite games, and while I enjoyed Front mission 3, it's not quite as good.

Wait wait wait... there are people who didn't like Mechassault 2 because it was too serious, and insufficiently over the top? Wow.
This thread made me realize that Operation Darkness had a demo out (didn't know), and it made me realize that since I recently bought my 360 I have to start looking at 360 games as potential buys. Also, the OD demo isn't bad at all, what were y'alls complaints with it?
Also, this doesn't look too bad but the only time I like giant stompy mechs is when I'm playing Armored Core. Oh god, I just realized I can buy Armored Core 4!

My problems with the Operation Darkness demo were as follows:
1) Seems like I spent more time moving my characters across the overly big levels than actually fighting.
2) Having surprise reinforcements appear on the enemy side feels like cheating to me.
3) For a game where viewing large portions of the battlefield is important, having a camera that hovers at just above shoulder level is not a good idea.
4) Mission failure conditions: Deaths of like half your team members. Characters can die in 2 or 3 attacks. Multiple enemies can go in between your characters.

I'd think about resisting, but I know it's futile.
Imagine the customization on this game too.

Will they call it a Wardick, or Warshark?
This may decide whether or not I buy this game. Because I need a game where I can pilot a beam cannon armed wardick across a desert.
1. They called one of the "zoids" Liger, and that's awesome. After all, who wouldn't want a giant robot that's bred for it's skills in magic?
2. The "zoids" kinda look like the robots from Voltron, and I loved Voltron back in the day.
