Installing Ubuntu - A Few Issues

So, I finally decided I wanted to try out Ubuntu after hearing so many neat things about it. So I get a disk and set out to get a nice dual-boot going (XP and Ubuntu).

Thankfully, the install disk even has it's own little partitioner, so it really takes care of most everything for me. But I ran into some trouble. When I boot from the disk, there's several options, two of which are "Start/Install" and "Start Ubuntu in Safe Graphics Mode". I tried the first, but for some reason I get nothing but graphical gibberish and over my screen and I have to restart my computer to get out of it.

The second option yields better results. It actually loads up Ubuntu and on the desktop is the Installer. So I go through all the steps until it wants me to set the size of the partition for Ubuntu. I tell it what size, and give it the go ahead... And as it starts it says that there was an error, and it can't continue. Doesn't tell me what went wrong or what error, just that it can't. So no matter what I try, it just tells me it can't and sends me to the manual partition setup screen.

So, I know these problems are rather vague, but could anyone help me figure this out? I'd like to get this working.

I'm not running any Linux OS at the moment, so I'm probably not going to be of any help, but I'll try anyway.

I don't know what the included partitioner is capable of, but I'd suggest using Partition Magic or the like in Windows to prepare or allocate the space for the Ubuntu partition.

It seems kind of odd to me that it would load the Ubuntu OS and have an installer on the desktop rather than installing it directly.

Is it a Live disc or some such? If it is, maybe look for a dedicated install disc. If it's not, maybe you should try a Live version so you can just see if it'll run normally off the disc before installing it to the HDD.

See, at first I did have a separate partition already set aside for Ubuntu. However, when I went through the installer, I didn't see any option to install to that partition. Perhaps I just missed it.

And it is a Live CD, but it clearly gives instructions for installing Ubuntu so I don't know what's up.

It's a pretty capable partitioner, it can resize fat32/ntfs/etc.

    The LiveCD includes the installer.

Vann Diras: if you're just trying Ubuntu out, you could try installing using Wubi. When booted into Windows, insert the Ubuntu disk and it should let you install to a file in your Windows partition:

Let me guess, you are trying to use 64bit?

Did you check the MD5 checksum of the disc? It might have come across as wonky.
Also, I never really liked the LiveCD of Ubuntu. Try the Alternate CD. Straight up text-based installer, same difference in the end.

Also the wubi thing. Did that to my brother-in-law's computer.

Alright, I'll try out the wubi thing. That sounds much better for just trying Ubuntu anyway.

Alright, so an update on my difficulties.

So I've installed Wubi now and gone through all that, and when I tell it to boot into Ubuntu, it freezes once it gets to the loading screen. It does this every time, forcing me to restart.

Ubuntu really doesn't want me to see it, I guess. Any tips?
