So my wife wants a 360 for her birthday as the Wii is not quenching her thirst for RPGs (She loves Oblivion and will cry if she cannot play Fallout 3). I was wondering how bad an idea of buying a refurbished console would be. I've found quite a few refurbed premium consoles on eBay with a Buy-It-Now of ~$250 and wanted to know if saving a hundred dollars could hurt me in the long run. Is RROD still a big issue? Also, are refurbished units still protected under warranty?
Refurbished units are covered under the original warranty; it is not extended. You will be protected under warranty from the RROD until November if it's a launch unit (or the original was sold at launch).
However, the warranty isn't transferable. Depending on how the CS rep feels, they're not obliged to give you a free repair if you did not purchase the first unit originally and you don't have proof of purchase.
To be honest I'd jump on a new Premium. That way you get a full three years of protection against RROD and a brand new 12-month warranty for all other faults.
