Finally got this game yesterday, which means it is
FINALLY AVAILABLE IN CANADA! HOORAY! I got it for $20 at Future Shop (and so Best Buy could have it as well), though I've heard Blockbuster also have it. EBGames should get it as well, as when I tried to buy it from them I was told it was "sold out".
For those that will TL;DR....
BUY, YOU FOOLS!
I haven't been able to try enough of it out to give some decent impressions, such as multiplayer or the other modes beyond simple arcade play, so I'll edit this when I do get a chance to do so.
All impressions are based on the Wii version. This game is also available on PS2 and PSP, but the PS2 version does NOT have Jive Time and Sorcerer.
First impressions/Intro: Each copy of this game in Canada will ONLY HAVE THE FRENCH MANUAL. Don't ask me why this is, aside from the bi-lingual laws. I don't know why there's no English version.
You can download the English manuals in PDF on the official website though, so it's not all bad. The game itself is in English though, so you'll have no problems with it. When you pop in your purple disc of pinball love and it starts running, three words will enter your mind:
NEEDS MORE COWBELL!Game itself: Every pinball table is enjoyable, though Jive Time goes by very quickly because of how easy it is to lose balls from the outside lanes and there will be times when Pin*Bot is unforgiving as I've literally lost balls due to the strength of the plunger alone and I never had a chance to use the flippers. Beyond that, it is PINBALL, and it is FUN!
Four of the 10 tables have Free Play unlocked right at the start, and you have 20 credits to spend to play the other tables. You can get more credits by achieving any of the five goals each table has, and you can earn a single credit through the match game at the end of your final ball. There could be other ways of getting more credits though, because I seemed to grab credits like no one's business. I stuck with just the four Free Play tables for an hour and quickly got 100 credits, so.... You can earn Free Play for the other tables by completing any table's five goals (it will give you the choice of which table you want Free-Play'd) but this will also give you "Wizard Goals", and you'll need to be damn good to beat all of those ones. You can also buy Free Play for each table, though I haven't done this yet as I want to try to earn them. I assume this will take a certain number of your credits to do.
Oh, how silly of me. Here are the ten tables in the game:
Pin*bot, Funhouse, Gorgar, Firepower, Black Knight, Space Shuttle, Taxi, Jive Time, Whirlwind, Sorcerer
No table is locked away from you, so you can play your favourite right away. It'll just take a moment to find them due to the presentation of the tables in an actual arcade setting. The reviews are not kidding when they say they wish they could go through the whole building instead of just circling around to each pinball table. However, the "Upstairs" section is simply just two of the ten pinball tables, which makes me ask why bother making an upstairs section and not a bigger 1st floor.
If you don't know how to play the tables, the Instructions option (located in each table's main menu just before you start) is where to go as that will show you step-by-step how they work. They did an incredible job with the level of detail that was put into this part. Text, voice-over, and zooming camera angles for each specific area of the table is described clearly. If you ever need something described to you later on, just remember what "page" it was on and all you'll have to do is keep hitting Left until you get there.
Controls/Audio: Controls work extremely well. Z and B are the left and right flippers, respectively. The analog stick works as the plunger, and the "waggle" works as nudging the table from the left or right. A button is something for Black Knight, I have no idea. 1 and 2 are your camera controls. 1 switches between Full View and Smart cameras (and Plunger camera when needed), and 2 changes your perspective of the table. There are 5 sets for each kind of camera, but they both work flawlessly that I don't need to change from the default. While using the Smart camera, it will zoom in on the ball while it's in the upper half of the table so you can have a closer look at what's going on. As the ball goes back down toward the flippers, it will revert back to basically where your head would be if you were playing an actual pinball machine. Multi-ball will force Full View style, but when you lose a ball, it will go back to the Smart camera if that's what you were using. It's so buttery smooth, you'll think it's fattening. (And I don't care how cheesy that sounds.)
As I said, the controls are great, but I wish there was a custom option solely so I could mirror the controls and therefore have the remote in my left hand and the nunchuk in my right. All of the tables have their plungers on their right side, so I'd like to use the analog stick in my right hand. That's probably taking nit-picking to the extreme, isn't it?
Audio is just as great as it captures the feel being in the arcade with its background sounds in addition to the sounds made by your pinball table. Basically, there's your pinball table's sound and music, the background sounds of the arcade, and the music that's played while looking around in the arcade, and you can customize how loud each aspect can be. Maybe it's just me, but the background arcade noise seems a bit too loud for the default setting in comparison to how loud your pinball table is. I just remember from my experiences that no matter how loud an arcade is, you can always distinctly hear everything of the game your playing. You may have to do some audio tweaking, or maybe you'll just crank everything up to 11.
Worried about the size of the save file? It's 1 block. Relax.
The price? You missed it at the top of the post. $20.
IT'S ABSOLUTELY WORTH IT! $20 for 10 tables with amazing controls should be a no-brainer/impulse buy. You would have to HATE pinball in general to disagree with that.
I'm not sure what else I can put here, so if you have any questions, ASK THEM!

i might have to go buy it tomorrow. thanks thread!
What I've found out about it is that it is quite possibly one of the best pinball videogames that exist with superb physics and accurate and detailed tables and excellent controls, based on really fun 'classic' Williams pinball tables.
If I were a fan of pinball, I'd buy this in a heartbeat.

I alternate primarily between Funhouse and Taxi, since they are tables that I actually used to play in an arcade. Okay, there was also a Whirlwind there, but I found the spinning playfield to be far too random and annoying, and it's a testament to the accuracy of the simulation that it is in this game as well. I also like Pinbot and Black Knight, but the rest of the tables are largely uninteresting.
My major wish is that they'd do this for some of the more modern tables. A Star Trek: Next Generation simulation? I'd buy that on a disc by itself.
I don't know what you mean by this statement but I've hooked my nunchuk up and played like that. Also, This is an awesome 20$ title if you like pinball. Fun house alone makes this worth it. Hitting randy never gets old.
I did reviews for this and Dream Pinball 3D over on Snackbar Games, and I played them both at the same time. DP3D was so outclassed by PHoF that it was sort of embarrassing.
Would anyone be interested in high scores?
Yes, please! A Williams sequel with their licensed tables (TNG, Addams Family, etc.) would be heavenly. The only problem then would be having to switch discs.
Is there any place in the game where the goals are listed? Every now and then while I'm playing something will just pop up, but I don't always have the time to read what it was. I'm curious what I've managed to accomplish, and what things I should be trying to do.
Huh, I didn't realize that the Midway/Bally brands were actually part of Williams. In which case I demand a sequel containing Twilight Zone and The Addams Family. I'd gladly give up TNG for those two.
I picked this up a few weeks ago at Target, and I have to agree it's pretty superb. Even when compared to the Gottlieb collection, which I enjoyed immensely. Being able to switch to a static camera is a godsend some times, and even for the auto-cam, it's good at showing enough of the table so that you feel like you're in control.
Though having tables not be free play annoys me, I do like the mechanic of having goals to achieve for each one. The only ones I have yet to unlock are Firepower and Jive Time I believe.
Each table's menu has them listed; you can check either before you start playing or by hitting the + button during play.
I didn't either; I just assumed that it was a Williams game because I never really payed any attention to which companies made the tables.
Some digging around reveals that Bally/Midway was purchased by WMS (Williams) in 1988, so at least Addams Family and Twilight Zone were made after that and could probably be included on the same collection (in fact, Wikipedia says that only two Bally pinball games were released prior to '88).
Are you sure you didn't accidentally pick up a copy of Dream Pinball 3D?
Alternately, what version did you pick up? Because the Wii version feels spot-on.
Dream Pinball won't display in widescreen so it's stretched-out and crap. Not to mention the game itself is middling at best.
The Williams Collection, however, is brilliant and awesome. Tough to see some of the table, too much of the time, so I would have liked a better camera, but the pinball gameplay itself is simply fantastic. Really, it's damn near impossible to go back to most of the other modern pinball games afterwards, and really shows the poor table design in Pinball FX. The only ones it really compares well against is the Pro Pinball series.
Honestly, at 20 bucks, it's a ridiculously awesome value.
If you've played with the remote in your left hand and the nunchuk in your right, then you should know that you have to mirror your thinking about how to use your buttons. To use the right flipper, you have to press on the left trigger (which would be B on the remote) and vice-versa. If custom controls were allowed, you could switch how the triggers work.
Also, regarding the tables that are not free play, when you complete a table's set of goals, not only do you unlock the Wizard Goals for that table, but you're also given the option to unlock any locked table for free play.
Has anyone actually bought a table for free play? And has anyone done the other modes besides free play? I haven't even touched those because I'm just happy enough with playing any table at any time.

hmm, I will have to retry this again tonight and see how I have it setup. I'm just happy enough to use the triggers at all holding my fingers like I would in a real pinball machine. The tilt function leaves something to be desired but oh well.
I would easily pay another 20 bucks for twilight zone, adams family and Startrek the next generation pinball .
But......there's only ONE setup! o_O
Tilt works okay, but you do have to shove it very hard for it to kill your ball.
......scratching your head really quick could also cause it if you're not careful.

its a very well done pinbot and whirlwind, I swear these feel really close to the real thing. Its awesome.
I think I bought one; I made it my business to have Whirlwind available to me ASAP (fortunately Pinbot and Funhouse were already free), so I might have spent credits on that.
Of course, now I'm zeroing in on 1000 credits. They simply have no use once you've unlocked all the tables, which is a crime.
I've also played both the Williams Challenge and Tournament Mode. Tournament Mode is sort of bland (take the "replay" value for a given table, divide it by ten, and then score one point each time you score that many points), but the Williams Challenge is an experience you should try at least once. Just be sure to have some time set aside, because you have to play all ten tables and have three chances to score a minimum point total on each one. I don't think I've ever failed out, but it was close a couple of times (I'm looking at you, Pinbot!).
Heh. The first Goals I cleared were Black Knight's.
On my first play.
During a Williams Challenge.
I made that table my bitch; it was the first one I cleared all of the Wizard Goals on as well. I'm pretty sure I cleared most of them while clearing the original Goals, but you don't get credit for that. :P
Should I get the Wii version, the PSP version, or both? Is the PSP version turned sideways? That would be kind of awesome, if uncomfortable.

Get the Wii version. I see what BTP sounds like. I was tired when I posted about the controls earlier. Ya, you use the nunchuk on the left hand and Z and B but going from pin-bot in the NES days, its a welcomed relief.
I just wish I knew what it took to unlock everything under the options menu.
On a slightly off topic but semi-related note, I recently had the awesome experience of playing the two Playboy machines at the Playboy Club in Vegas. Got the gf to take photos of it 'cause I was in my glee. Unfortunately one visit wasn't enough to learn the ins and outs of each table and get good at them.
Two pinball machines? At one time? That's hot.
The next time you're in Vegas, you should try out the Pinball Hall of Fame. Bring twenties.
If I had known that such an animal existed I would have visited, depending on it's distance from Fremont Street or The Strip. Spent a fortune on transportation while I was down there. I noticed in that write-up that the Pinball Hall of Fame swiped it's change machines from the Golden Nugget's trash heap. We were staying at the Nugget.
..don't know why I saw fit mention that pointless coincedence.
We're already planning our return trip for next June. The Burlesque Hall of Fame's Miss Exotic World convention. I'll make it a point to get to the Pinball Hall of Fame then.
"You there! Stop saying Hall of Fame!"
Jive Time is a beast, but I kind of like it for it's simplicity and complete bastardness. Taxi and Whirlwind are my favourites, although Funhouse and Gorgar have their charms. All nice tables though. Only a matter of time before I go grab the Gottlieb collection, does anyone know if it's any good?
It's hard to fault it. If a table is a bastard to play, then it's the table's fault, not the games. It's probably been a net save in terms of monet spent in quarters versus buying the game.
The pinball itself is just as well done, it's just much harder to play them effectively. I'd say pick it up, since it's probably cheap as hell by now. And I do love some of the tables, especially the pool one. I just really hope they redo it with the new cameras.
Jive Time is kinda spooky, with no music and hardly any sound effects. Also hard to get a good score with unless you're very lucky. I think the Wizard goals are nearly impossible for that one.
This game (the Williams Wii one) rules, though. Anyone know of the Wii Gottlieb port in Europe? Is it any good? It's apparently just the Gamecube one with new controls...

I need to play this some more. No More Heroes booted it out of heavy rotation a couple of months ago, and then I went on a MegaMan kick in anticipation of MM9 and dug out my GCN MMAC for a while.
I actually managed to play through the whole Williams Challenge recently, and the way you describe Tournament Mode (which I haven't tried yet), it sounds just like the Williams Challenge but only for one table at a time. Is this correct?
Oh yeah, I only got 60 or so points in the Williams Challenge for a rank of "Tommy Wannabe". I rocked the crap out of one of the tables, but only barely squeaked by on many of them.
I hope there's more people enjoying this game.

I think you can choose how many tables, but otherwise yeah.
I named it my #2 game of the year. Sure, I had an incredibly small sample size, but hey.
If for whatever reason you've been waiting and praying for a 360/PS3 release of this game, look what NeoGAF found on Gamefly. It would seem your insane magnitude of patience has been rewarded.
According to Gamefly, the release date for these are June 12.
Since pinball is all about getting the highest score, I can't wait to see the leaderboards for this game. We could even try to have our own leaderboard spanning every version. I'm talking about a Top 10 regardless of the console used. That would be crazy.
