360 - Xbox 360 players should add PA GTA IV to their buddy list if they want to play online with people from Penny-Arcade with ease and without filling up their friends list. If PA GTA IV's friends list is full and you didn't get accepted in time, keep trying. There will be inevitable cleanings due to inactivity, so spots will eventually open up. In the meantime, send friend requests to as many people who are playing as you can from the list below, so you'll still be able to get invited and play with us.

As far as activity goes, monitoring won't be strict. Just play every now and then. As time goes on and the game has been out longer and longer, activity may stop being a concern.

If you are going to be inactive for a long period of time, such as your system red ringing or other concerns, don't worry. Send a private message to PA GTA IV (you can do it quickly through http://live.xbox.com) or Dashui on these forums and you'll be safe.

How does it play?

GTA IV takes place in a redesigned Liberty City (Grand Theft Auto, Grand Theft Auto III, Grand Theft Auto Advance, Grand Theft Auto: Liberty City Stories). Four boroughs of NYC are represented, as is New Jersey. "Broker" is Brooklyn, Queens is "Dukes", the Bronx is "Bohan", Manhattan is "Algonquin", and New Jersey is "Alderney."

Combat has changed from previous 3D GTA games, and now has a Gears of War-like cover system, and Crackdown-like lock-on/free aiming hybrid targeting.

Feature list brought to you by bruin:

- The location will be Liberty City, a completely retooled and more realistic, denser version.

- There will be five boroughs: Dukes (Queens), Bohan (the Bronx), Algonquin (Manhattan), Broker (Brooklyn), and Alderney (New Jersey). The player starts the game in Broker.

- You can no longer simply walk up to a car and jack it, or go to Pay and Spray to remove your wanted level. Some cars need to be broken into via the window and hot wired, older cars may stall, and you need to evade the police's line of sight.

- While the game is not as big as San Andreas, it has more detail and less wasted space.

- The police system has been entirely retooled. You will not instantly become wanted whenever you commit a crime, even in public. If there are no cops around, and someone sees you, they will have to notify the police. When the police are notified, a circular search area will appear on your radar. If you are outside of this area the cops will not be able to find you unless you commit another crime. If you are spotted in the circular area, the police will follow you to that location.

- Since Pay and Spray isn't an effective way of alluding the police, you must use other ways to get rid of wanted level: changing your clothes (especially if they are bloody); switching cars to confuse the police; running into someone's house, out the back, and on to their fire escape, among other things.

- Many interiors are fully decorated and have been given a much bigger emphasis and importance.

- While the game does not have planes, it does have helicopters.

- Holding down the fire trigger half-way will allow you to free aim your weapon, while holding it down completely will lock on to the nearest enemy.

- Niko has a cell phone. With the cell phone, you can call any number that's in the game, including mission leads, various characters, 911, and more. You access multi-player through your phone.

- Car trunks are now usable. You can put bodies and weapons into car trunks.

- Missions have been completely retooled. You won't have a giant arrow over someone's head if they are your target. For example, if you have to kill a target, but he's surrounded by a group of people, you may not know who he is. You can handle this in multiple ways. You can find out his phone number, call him up, see if he responds, and kill him; or you can simply go up to the entire group and kill all of them. The choice is up to you. Of course, if you do the latter, your boss may be upset with you...

- Depending on how well and what you do during missions, you can form relationships with your bosses and clients. If you do well, you will have a good relationship.

- Maintaining character relationships can result in specific rewards. Little Jacob is the man who sells you weapons. Your relationship is maintained through phone contact and loyalty. A relationship with a lawyer can help remove your wanted level with a phone call, for example.

- Trip skip feature from Vice City and Vice City Stories is back. Now you can even use cabs to drive you pretty much anywhere you want. You can skip the cab ride and get to the destination quicker for a cost, or you can view the ride from the first person and enjoy the trip.

- Ammunation is not a good supply for weapons any more. Having good relationships will get you access to more and better weapons.

- There is more emphasis on hand to hand combat in GTA IV.

- You should beware night time in certain burroughs, as you may get jumped by random gangsters and the freaks of Liberty. You can get robbed.

- There is now a GPS.

- The game now has a cover system.

- You can have girlfriends in the game. You can meet women through the internet for blind dates. They will react to how you act, where you take them, and even what you wear. Some are more clingy than others. For example, one may constantly send you text messages. If you ignore her, you could upset her.

- The internet is a feature in the game. You can use it to browse for information, view and send e-mail, and even setup blind dates.

- There will be no turf wars.

- You can now use an ATM or go to the bank to deposit or withdraw funds.

- You can now shoot different body parts and your victim will react realistically depending where he has been hit.

- Rockstar will use the Euphoria Engine, known from Star Wars: The Force Unleashed. It will power much of the physics in the game.

- Pedestrians have a memory. They remember your face when they saw you doing a criminal act and run away in terror whenever they see you again.

- The multiplayer will be activated via the cell phone. There are 15 game modes with up to 16 players online.

- Two minutes equals one hour in-game.

- There will be no seasons in the game.

- Every cop car has a working computer, which allows you to search for any criminal in the city, find his where abouts, and any thing remotely related to him or her.

- You can call the police, ambulance, and other services via 911. You can use this to escape from a heated battle or even clear out a police station.

Reviews

Note: Grand Theft Auto IV hasn't been reviewed based on platform, therefore there's no need to list both PS3 and 360 reviews from the same network. These networks, such as Gamespy and IGN, essentially copy and paste their review for each platform, tweaking a word here or there. Both versions of the game are mostly equal, so buy the game on the platform your friends are for the great multiplayer or based on your controller preferences.

WKTT Radio
WKTT Radio is a Conservative talk radio station located in Dukes. One of their top shows is the Richard Bastion show, who is a parody of right-wing talk show hosts such as Rush Limbaugh and Michael Savage.
In a Grand Theft Auto first, series fans could call in to the Rockstar offices and have their opinions on current issues recorded and go in the run to have it placed on the station in the final game. Rockstar Games announced this on 14 July 2007 and opened a website—WKTTRadio.com—with all the details needed to participate. This website now redirects to the WKTT page on the official GTA IV site.

Gamers will then receive a text message with the song and artist names, and if they're registered at the forthcoming Rockstar Games Social Club community site, they'll find an e-mail waiting in their inbox with a direct link to a custom playlist on Amazon.com. All songs tagged "ZiT" will be stored here, available for preview and purchase at Amazon's going rate of $.89-$.99 per track. Best of all, those MP3s are free of the Digital Rights Management (DRM) limitations imposed on files downloaded through Apple's iTunes store and thus can be imported into any computer or digital device with no constraints.

Needless to say, record execs are thrilled at the prospect of using GTA IV's radio to reach millions of ears and, in turn, wallets.

"We think giving players the ability to identify and buy their favorite tracks from Grand Theft Auto IV's popular radio stations is a great new music discovery tool for fans and an innovative new revenue stream for artists."

The recent success of downloadable music in other games gives credence to ZiT's ambitious dreams. In a mere three months, owners of MTV Games' hit music game Rock Band have downloaded over 6 million songs. At roughly $2 apiece, that's a hefty source of post-launch revenue.

None of those tracks, however, are accessible outside the game, and that's where GTA IV's model really takes off. Rockstar has boldly proclaimed that GTA IV's soundtrack is "the biggest in the history of entertainment," and with over 150 tracks, we're not prone to argue. In addition to high-profile tunes from popular artists, the developers are aiming for music geeks by handpicking rare, hard-to-find songs such as Electrick Funk's 12-inch treasure "On A Journey" and Elton John's "Street Kids" off his relatively unheralded Rock of the Westies. Some artists have even contributed brand new songs written exclusively for the game, including "Vagabond (Liberty City Mix)" by the Greenskeepers and "War is Necessary" from iconic rapper Nas.

One Hundred and Eighty (10) -Score 180 with 3 darts in a darts game.

Pool Shark (10)- Beat a friend at pool.

Finish Him (15)- Complete 10 melee counters in 4 minutes.

Genetically Superior (25) -Come first in 20 singleplayer street races.

Wheelie Rider (30) -Do a wheelie lasting at least 500 feet on a motorbike.

Gobble Gobble (10) -Score 3 strikes in a row in 10-pin bowling.

Driving Mr. Bellic (10) -Unlock the Taxi special ability.

Rolled Over (30)- Do 5 car rolls in a row from one crash.

Walk Free (50)- Lose a 4-star wanted rating by outrunning the cops

Courier Service (10)- Complete all 10 package delivery jobs

Retail Therapy (10)- Unlock the special ability of buying guns from a friend.

Chain Reaction (20)- Blow up 10 vehicles in 10 seconds.

One Man Army (40)- Survive 5 minutes on 6-star wanted level.

Lowest Point (5)- Complete mission "Roman's Sorrow."

Over Fulfilled (10)- Complete all 10 Exotic Export orders.

Manhunt (15)- Complete the Most Wanted side missions from the police computer.

Cleaned the Mean Streets (20)- Capture 20 criminals through the police computer.

Fed The Fish (5)- Complete the mission "Uncle Vlad."

It'll Cost Ya (5)- Complete a taxi ride without skipping from one island to another.

Sightseer (5)- Fly on all helicopter tours of Liberty City.

Warm Coffee (5)- Successfully date a girl to be invited into her house.

That's How We Roll! (10)- Unlock the Helicopter special ability.

Half Million (55)- Reach a balance of $500,000.

Impossible Trinity (10)- Complete mission "Museum Piece."

Full Exploration (20)- Unlock all the islands.

Dare Devil (30)- Complete 100% of the unique stunt jumps.

It's easier to just race them since they all crash in the first 20 seconds of the race and will never be seen again.

A bit hard to do via beeping. I got off and got onto the other bike and beeped but then he got on to the new bike. I tried to drive away from him and in little circles but no go. It was someone from pa so after that game I just explained why I went completely beeping loco at him with a forum PM, but with a headset I could have said "get on the other bike".

I really wish you could text people on your phone list. Why is this feature not implemented. Whyyyyy.

I found a sweet spot about a half step left from the default position and rolling it perfectly straight. I got four in a row on my last four bowls.

Take the lane all the way on the left. Get in position with two full steps to the left, and bowl straight as an arrow, and don't try for speed. Just a casual release.

So I saw that key to the city thing for getting 100% before the 19th and thought to myself 'fuck yeah, I can do that, look at that awesome key'. I print off maps for jumps and pigeons and side missions at work and set about pigeon hunting last night. I got six pigeons before having an epiphany. I don't need this shit, this isn't how to enjoy GTA, why would Rockstar run something so blatantly unpleasurable as forcing yourself to 100% a game this big in such a short period of time, the key is just rubbish anyway and would serve more as a symbol for how pathetic a persons life is than a trophy of accomplishment. Then I decided it'd be way more fun to go on a rampage get four stars and try and steal armored cars and FIB cars and climb really tall buildings a shoot down helicopters. And I was right.

I do this all the time. You can shoot the tires out while racing and not fail so the other cars just skate around slamming into each other. You can't shoot the drivers though...

BEWARE! When doing this you will often get a comfortable lead. If you start to slack off and let them catch up they will WRECK YOUR SHIT from behind. The time I did this was hilarious because I was racing on a motorcycle and just practicing my power slides. Then all of a sudden when I took a turn wide the entire pack came, with wheels sparking, around the corner and threw me off my bike at high speed when I hit a house and died.

Darts is definitely the easiest of the games. I can win it in six throws (two turns) every time now. I'm no darts expert but I reckon that's the fewest possible throws to win at 301.

How do you know those few thousand people aren't enjoying it though, I certainly had fun earning some of these achievement. I guess this achievement is aim towards the more hardcore players rather than causal Bob and Tom.

Packie fucking ran the table on me. I was like what the fuck? CALM DOWN YOU IRISH PRICK!!!!

He has surpassed L.J. as my favorite character. The insults he throws at people, the shit he says to you when he's drunk is fucking hilarious. Being a low-brow drunken Irishmen myself, I can appreciate all of that.

Bowling's achievment is hard because Niko's side steps aren't uniform, sometimes it's a big step, some times little, sometimes he does a flip over into the other lane, says TADAAA then throws the ball, u can never tell.

I played Quboid once, I got 2nd place and I have no urge to ever play it again.

And I found shooting out their tires in a race doesn't make them drive worse, they always seem to drive like their tires have been shot out already.

Just like every other GTA game I will never ever ever get all the hidden packages.

And one thing, if people haven't done it yet, walk through Times Square (or Star Junction I think?) at night. Just walk and take it all in, it's fucking amazing. The job they did with this game is great. How they made an insane driving and blowing shit up fantastic game also be awesome when you're taking a stroll, enjoying the sites and over hearing some hilarious conversations worth while I'll never know.

Yeah, I look at the size of the city, and it's almost overwhelming. Most of the time, I'm speeding past it getting to my next destination. But I keep reminding myself that I need to just start walking around the streets to see what I can find. Based on the map, that'll take me forever to do, but I think I should sometime. I feel like I'm missing half of the game by not exploring every dark corner.

I blame taxi cabs being so damn convenient for my lack of exploration, in GTA:SA I knew most routes, I'm still lost in LC after 30+ hours of gameplay.

See also: SatNav. A blessing and a curse. The first ten hours of GTA games are traditionally taken up running into walls, rivers, getting stuck in infinite cul-de-sac loops etc. until you learn the paths through the city to get to where the arrow is pointing. Once you learn them, you are the God of that city, you know every backalley, freeway exit and apartment block and can orientate yourself in an instant. Now with satnav there isn't that initial HOW THE HELL DO I GET THERE?!?! situation but at the same time if you rely on it you never learn the city in as much detail as you would without it. Whats worse is that I've noticed it obeys the rules of the road, so while once upon a time, I'd always take the shortest possible route I now find myself doubling back through one way routes or driving round the block rather than down an alleyway, across someones backyard or over a jump to shortcut onto or off the freeway.

i wish i could put bookmarks on the map that were saved... I have come across so many things i want to come back to from random driving... you never know when that bus depot can come in handy.

Dead-on Szehcuan...this really screws me up in multiplayer in things like team mafiya or car jack city. If you set a way-point to the objective and follow what the SatNav tells you, you will be the last person to get there. You really need to be jumping your car off cliffs and shit to get the job done.

Just do what I do, start putting bookmarks on the map that comes with the game. Am I the only one who uses that map regularly? Especially to figure out that subway system.

Hit down on the D-pad. You can see if your GPS route is being unnecessarily convoluted and act accordingly. I've adapted to a 'use the GPS as a general direction marker and not much else' strategy. It also helps that I know the city better - that Star Junction has that massive one-way street down it that I can weave through, for example.
