Oi, whats this then?
My Life as a King is a fantasy city-building simulator in which the player creates a kingdom from the ground up. Starting with a barren town consisting of a lone castle and a large power crystal, by using the crystal's power the player can magically place a variety of buildings to populate the settlement and draw in residents.
To continue using the crystal to build up the settlement, the player must accumulate elementite which must be obtained from crystals found in the dungeons and caves that surround the town. Instead of actually gathering the crystals first hand, the game prompts the player to recruit young citizens to do so. These soldiers are paid via taxes the player collects from the residents of the town, as well as from treasures found during their quest. The player can follow their progress by reading message boards placed around town.
The player must also tend to the needs of their residents by building amenities such as a bakery to increase their happiness, or a weapons shop to better equip their soldiers. As the game advances the number of quests increase for the player, their soldiers will be able to gain experience and aspiring adventurers will appear, asking to be recruited
Some have described it as "Actraiser Like" others have said it is "Majesty-ish", no matter how you describe it everyone agrees, its the best damn thing you can spend $15 American dollars on.
You are the King, a King trying to rebuild your kingdom. In order to do this you send impressionable youth to their doom. You can help these Doomed Youth by building Weapon, Item, and Armor shops. Or by building training centers when they can learn new skills or change classes.
Why do you need to put kids, barely even young adults in harms way? Because you need resources to build your kingdom thats why! You in turn use this resource, called Elementite (catchy no?) to build more homes, shops, and other things to aid your Glory Blinded Soldiers.
You also have the parents of these idiot kids to take care of too. Pressing their children into military service can be hard on a family. You need to help boost your citizen's morale. You can build parks, bakeries, Megalo-Marts all to help make your people happy.
The King and his Posse.
The King and his fancy Hat.
King Leo is his default name, though you can change this. He is a bit of a pansy which explains why he sends others to do his dirty work. Sure his followers try to tell him he needs to stay back and do kingly things, but deep down they know. . . they know.
Chime. . . eye candy.
Chime is the Chancellor, as such she manages the boring parts of running a Kingdom. She also seems to be your nanny and construction contractor. Whenever you want to place a building just ring the bell and she will pop right there. Also when you scratch your head, twitch, or any other slight movement with the wiimote will cause her to teleport and interrupt your King Time.
Hugh Yurg, small dude what trains you manz.

Hugh Yurg is a Lilty Knight that helps you hire adventures and runs the local Warrior training place. He also apparently cooks.
Is this game for me?
Yes.

I have braved the Gamefaq message board and have retrieved a handy FAQ (go figure).
Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicals: My Life as a King FAQ
Q: How long is this game?
A: Depends on how you play. Some people beat it in less than 8 hours, but do so by skipping a lot of the content. I'm about 14 hours into it so far and probably not even 75% done.
Q: Do I need to get Downloadable content?
A: No, DLC isn't required at all to play the game. It's pretty complete without it, it just adds more depth, if you want to pay for it.
Q: Is any of the DLC unlockable through gameplay?
A: No. All the DLC is standalone. The only way to get it is to pay for it. And again, it's totally not neccessary to enjoy the game.
Q: Is *insert DLC here* worth it?
A: All depends on the user. I bought most of it and haven't had a second thought. Other people don't think so.
Q: Do I actually get to kill stuff?
A: No, all you do is manage the town and send adventurers to kill things for you. It's a lot more time consuming than you think.
Q: How do I get morale spheres?
A: When you build your first bakery you will get them, and an explanation about them.
Q: How do I make the day longer/stay up later?
A: This is related to your moral spheres. When you have a full sphere you can call Chime to you. One of the options she gives you is "raise morale." Using this will consume a sphere and your morale bar will turn orange and start counting down. While this is active, any adventurer you talk to will get a temporary stat boost, and talking to any townspeople will make them get along better with their family. The latter is what lets you stay out later at night. The more families that get along well, the later you can stay out.
Q: How do I get more morale spheres?
A: Look for dungeons that give you "Bakery+" or "Emporium+" as a reward. You can have three bakeries (one sphere each) and one Emporium (two spheres).
Q: How do I declare a holiday?
A: You have to upgrade your town, which is done by going to the castle when you have a full morale sphere. Chime will tell you all about that. After the second upgrade you get the option to declare a holiday by choosing it as a behest from the castle.
Q: How do I get new classes?
A: Unlock their building through dungeon exploration. Gambling Hall is the Thieves requirement. Black Mage Academy and White Mage Temple are self explanatory. You can also improve Warrior abilities with the Training Hall (which also will train certain weapon skills to anyone who can use them).
Q: How many classes are there?
A: Four: Warrior, Thief, White Mage, Black Mage.
Q: How do I change classes?
A: When posting the daily behests, select the castle. There are behests there that sends out recruitments for a class change. Then just talk to the character you want to change classes.
Q: Wtf, the guy I wanted isn't there?
A: Tough luck, you'll have to try again tomorrow. AI is kinda random when choosing who wants to change classes. One way to avoid this is by only posting one behest.
Q: How do I get more behests?
A: Build a bulliten park.
Q: Why are my adventurers always sad?
A: You probably need to raise their pay. Go to the Guild Hall (build one if you haven't) and increase their pay level.
Q: How do I get more Adventurers?
A: Guild Hall again. You can upgrade it up to a maximum of 16 total Adventurers.
Q: My adventurer sucks, how do I replace them?
A: You can't. Once you hire someone they're yours to deal with forever.
Q: How do I get *insert building*?
A: Look at the dungeon info when you're setting behests. If you can get a building, it will say that, by clearing the dungeon, you get a certain building. This is also how you increase the building limit on some of them (houses, bakeries, etc.).
Q: How do you group adventurers into a party?
A: Requires the Tavern. Comes from a level 10 area south of the castle. You need black mages for this, the boss is immune to physical.
Q: What does each building do?
A: When you get a new building the moogle by the lookout tower will have any information you need about the building. Ask him.
Q: How do I get my adventurers to stay out later?
A: After you build an Emporium, all your shops will be able to research new stuff. Research "Survival Items" at the item shop to learn torches.
Q: What happens when I demolish a building?
A: Any residents move into the castle until you rebuild it. If you demolish a small house, then build a spacious one, the residents will move into that one instead (and bring more people!). You gain back 100% of the elimentite at the end of the day (shown in your morning report).
Q: Is there a limited amount of elimentite in the game?
A: No, you can get elimentite from exploring old areas, but the amount is usually very low (in the low double digits).
Q: How do I get Sword Metal/Armor Plating/Fire Magicite/etc?
A: When a shop owner tells you they need specific materials to continue advancing research on their wares, the next day you will be able to place a behest on a certain area that says you can find that material there. This is sequential so look for the lowest level area that has the item. When you clear it it will go from "X can be found" in the info to "X has been collected." Also, beware, because the Boss that guards it is much more powerful than the area level.
Q: *Dungeon* has the item I need, but I can't place a behest for my adventurers to get it.
A: Two possible problems. 1: You need to get a lower level one first. 2: You haven't fully explored the area. An area must be 100% explored for you to behest research material gathering.
Q: Why does your morale gauge start to glow in a blue aura?
A: Your adventurers killed a boss, either to clear an area or gather resources for one of your shops, or it's a holiday. All morale gain from talking to citizens is doubled. However, if you use a morale booster, you will lose the aura and the bonus morale gain.
And some pretties-
UncleSporky has a bit of awesome to share, a map of the city!
After a sojourn at GFAQs, I come bearing gifts for the OP!
Plan out your city!
Here's a handy dandy flash simulator for city planning. Good luck figuring out which buildings are which.
Also a tip: back up your DLC.
Downloadable content is not covered in the Nintendo ToS (Terms of Service). This means if your Wii were to break, and Ninty doesn't back up your files it's game-over.
While you can re-download content if you have active save file, that's not always going to happen. Instead, enter your saved game data and copy the file with the Golden Crown as it's emblem.
This file can only be used on your Wii, and is proof of your purchase(s). If your Wii is irriversably damaged, pack your SD card with the Wii and have them link your files.
MyNintendo doesn't recognize DLC, so every time you upgrade, replace your back-up!
I will add whatever you think should go in the OP. I especially need a pic of Hugh Yurg, but cannot find one.
Let us discuss, share stories, and even write poetry!
A Capellan's favorite sheath for any blade is your back.

I looked for a picture of the Black Knight from FF:CC to replace Hugh Yurg, but sadly I couldn't even find one of those!
Anyways, this game is the best of show in this "Summer" gaming season.
I'm calling it right now; I'll enjoy this game more than any $60 game this summer.
A thousand space pardons. Please note I have rectified this problem.
I know its WAY early to be talking about sequels, but one thing I really, really want to see added is the ability to watch your Adventurer's battles or at the very least just the Boss fights "Ogre Battle" style .
Only on day 5-6 but I can feel the appeal already. I can't imagine the king having enough time in the day to talk to all the citizens later on.
Is there some sort of indicator on how tired an adventurer is? or is there a rule of thumb for how often you should commission them? My first adventurer I sent out 3 times and on the 3rd mission, he came back early saying he was too tired.
My second adventurer came back early after back-to-back missions, was only her 2nd mission and she came back early! Sigh...Her name is Rydia, I had high hopes for her, but maybe her place is better served in the bakery than on the field. I was hoping she would marry Richard, my first adventurer, but seeing as he's a lazy bum too... I should them both out and hope they perish. My kingdom deserves bettter! BETTER I SAY!
edit: what does the exploration meter for a dungeon accomplish? is there any reason to actually behest them to explore the dungeon when you can just tell them to EXP on their own?
When they line up for the behest at the beginning of the day, if their emoticon face is blue, tell them to go rest. That's pretty much the only indication the game gives you. But fountain parks will help with that.
As for the exploration meter, you need to fully explore areas in order to do some quests, and you need a sufficient amount of exploration to challenge the boss of an area, and in doing so, clear it.
Okay. So far I only send yellow happy faces out on behests and I tell blues to just EXP (since there's no rest option for them) and greens I tell them to rest.
Is there a cooldown on when you can get elementite from an area or once you've cleared it, that's it? I'm noticing a distinct lack of elementite income when i'm looking over reports.
edit: whats the purple named monsters in an area mean? rare spawn? do I just send guys there on behests in hopes they battle him?
You only get text notices and reports on their progress. You don't actually see them fighting. The combat reports are pretty in-depth though. Tells you what they fought and then breaks down the individual monster encounters and then further into each round of combat and how much damage was exchanged per round.
As a tip, after you give your adventurers their assignments, follow them to the equipment shop and wait for them to exit. After they come out from shopping, talk to them for the morale bonus. When they start returning from their missions, wait by the gate or the castle and talk to them before they pick up their payment. You can hit them 2x in a day for morale.
I agree! It's so addictive. It's been a while since I played a game with such a "one more day" draw, and I know it's because of the way they lined up the end of day/start of day events, but knowing doesn't help me resist.
I like how much they spaced out the various buildings especially, in most building games you get access to everything pretty quickly but this one stays fresh for longer. I just got the tavern at 60 days in.
Someone was mentioning before ways to obtain extra medals from the townsfolk, anyone know what is going on there? Also, does walking into people's houses do anything?
You know, unless the bikini one is hot naturally.
I used a Morale Orb at the start of the morning and talked with all my citizens, I got a message after each saying they're getting along better at home. Some citizens i was able to talk to 2-3 times as they were shopping. I checked each house and all of the meters were raised considerably. Two houses were at max, I got medals from both. The parent needs to be home to receive a medal though, if no one is home, the penguin won't give you a medal even if the meter is maxed.
I guess after that there's a cooldown time on getting medals. edit: okay well i just got medals from 1 house back-to-back days...and new houses with full meters didn't give any. I guess just keep checking max meter houses everyday.
Are you saying that you have to pay a re-occurring fee to continue playing? Or are you simply referring to the downloadable content which you have to pay for?
o_O
there's no subscription fee. Just the DLC you pay for.
Plan out your city!
Here's a handy dandy flash simulator for city planning. Good luck figuring out which buildings are which.

No subscription fees, but you can buy extra content. I myself got everything BUT the stupid costumes. I ain't paying for fucking alternative costumes if it adds nothing to gameplay.
Cheesy, to be sure, but kind of clever. The nature of this game makes it endlessly expandable. They could always add new classes, dungeons, items, etc. without really changing the game's basic story and framework.
Your adventurers accept a quest. They purchase items and party up. They leave the town. They return to town to report the results of the quest.
It's like playing as a server in an MMO.
Nope, not gonna happen. Chime was either the secret mistress of his father or a lesbian.
Also, the purple named monsters appear to be related to material collection quests, you need to defeat them in-order to get the materials needed for research. Sending multiple people on a behest doesn't mean they're partied to do the objective, they all try to solo it, and each one fights a completely healed monster. Damn Bavarois wiped out all of my adventurers. (Purple guys might also pop up in random encounters when your dudes are passing through).
I always figured she was totally going to end up with Goliath (my first adventurer, the one you build a Park for so he can ask her out).
And oh how I hate Bavarois. I hate them with a passion. Almost as much as I hate that darn Dungeon where you unlock the Tavern. So many defeats, so very many. And Mindflayers, but they are at least RARE, even if they can kill just about anything very rapidly.
Also, I seem to have one of my Adventurers with a fondness for Axes. She's had 2 drop from bosses (one just a normal axe, another a Barbarian Axe X with a Strength boost), but sadly looks to have sold them off, since all I have available were Sword skills (and now Daggers, which I need to research)
I really wish you could tell adventurers what to wear... The whole shop special day thing seems pointless if the adventurers don't take advantage of it. Maybe when they have specific jobs they'll lean towards certain items/stats more? I didn't pay much attention to their items earlier but after looking at some of their gear it's horrendous. Some of my warriors are taking -5 str axes +5 agi/wis/int type of deals
Also I take it back. Multiple adventurers can complete a single exploration behest and contribute multiple times to it. The only thing multiple adventurers doesn't really seem to matter for is on boss kills. I imagine multiple adventurers on material collection also yields multiple returns.
How you get new weapon skills?
They show up in the shops and training hall once you get an Emporium up and running.
According to the documentation (why do I have to connect to the Wii Shop every time I want to read it again?) you eventually gain the ability to demolish buildings.
Chapter 3. But it sounds like you never can fire an adventurer or raise the limit beyond 16 so plan it carefully (if you wanted to make sure you got a certain amount of the other races in there).
Any idea what the other races provide? just different stats or are there race specific classes?
You'll get a tavern later. Tavern=parties. It's pretty simple.
Pay attention to what the area that gives you the tavern says, though. Use the black mages.
Thanks for the quick response. I was hoping i didn't do anything wrong, since I got the guild hall and nothing was there.
Taverns. Once unlocked YOU can form parties (or let the adventurers setup their own parties). I initially setup some parties myself but then found the characters often could put together their own clever little on the fly parties I think a little better (the problem with when you set them up is that if some members are not available for a run that day, the party will still go out a few characters down since the parties you put together will not adapt on the fly themselves).
I think the only potential overlap was the buying the additional races individually or as a group but once you buy any of the races individually they won't allow you to buy the group package anyways.
