Konami strikes back at Rockband and GH4 (well tries to)
Publisher Konami kicked off its 2008 Gamers Day yesterday with the announcement of Rock Revolution (PS3, X360, Wii, NDS), a new multi-instrument rhythm title developed by Zoe Mode and slated to arrive this October.
The PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 versions feature a drum kit described by the company as "the most realistic drum peripheral on the market," with six drum pads and a kick pedal arranged in a manner similar to an actual drum kit.
Rock Revolution PS3 and X360 renditions will include a five-note guitar peripheral, which can be used for lead guitar or bass in-game. Microphone-supported vocal performances, however, are not included.
The game's Wii incarnation is said to include air-drum and air-guitar gameplay utilizing the Wii Remote and Nunchuck, but no additional peripherals. The Nintendo DS version makes use of stylus-based rhythm play for all instruments, and even includes support for vocals via the handheld's built-in microphone.
The initial release of the console version will feature 40 songs, with downloadable tracks to follow after release on the Xbox 360 and PS3. A representative of the company later clarified to Shacknews that, unlike the master tracks seen in other rhythm titles, all of Rock Revolution's playable songs are covers.
Rock Revolution comes equipped with two complete career modes for drums and guitar/bass, as well as five difficulty levels. The game features gameplay conventions similar to those seen in other rhythm titles, including an overdrive mode which increases the player's score multiplier when engaged.
In addition to local and online multiplayer, the Xbox 360 and PS3 versions of Rock Revolution also feature Jam Mode, aimed at allowing players to create their own songs with the guitar and drum peripherals. Though the mode was not directly demonstrated, Jam Mode is said to allow players to record songs on up to eight separate tracks.
The Wii and DS versions feature neither Jam Mode nor online multiplayer, but do support local battles and cooperative play.
A complete list of songs was not disclosed by Konami, but songs spotted during the demonstration included covers of "Blitzkrieg Bop" by the Ramones, "Chop Suey" by System of a Down, "Run to the Hills" by Iron Maiden, "Cum On Feel the Noize" by Quiet Riot, and Wolfmother's "Joker and the Thief."
When questioned about cross-compatibility with between Rock Revolution's peripherals and other rhythm titles, Konami senior brand manager Lauren Faccidomo said that the company was hopeful.
"We're trying to work [cross-compatibility] out," said Faccidomo. "The drum peripheral was specifically made for this game—if it works with others, that's great too."
A price point was not disclosed by Konami for any versions of Rock Revolution. However, it's presumable that the Wii and DS versions, which require no additional peripherals, will clock in at standard retail prices of around $50 and $30, respectively.
Rock Revolution is currently scheduled for an October release date on all platforms.

Ah, good thing I checked—was just about to make this thread.
Rest of the pics are at the link, along with an embedded vid. Talk about being late to the party, Konami—you could've had this shit locked down years ago. But seriously:
unlike the master tracks seen in other rhythm titles, all of Rock Revolution's playable songs are covers.
This is pretty weak. Too little, too late, and I think people are already getting plastic instrument fatigue.
if they go along with what made Beatmania, DrumMania, DDR and the like awesome then this could be great. The thing is, the only things in Rock Band I hate are the lack of ANY modifiers (speed mods, dark and note mods, goofy mods...etc) and that the scrolling happens sorta like hallway from ITG2. I'd MUCH prefer the scrolling be overhead top down so maybe Rock Revolution will be good. Here's hoping the songs are actually ok.
oh and if the drums are awesome like they are at the arcade version of Drum Mania then I'll definitely buy it.

That video was seriously boring.

The fretboard is exactly Konami/Bemani style, so you're in luck. The game's presentation seems so blah compared to RB and GH, though ... honestly, it looks like a dolled-up Frets on Fire.
I am guessing this will be terrible, but it is my hope that more people keep making this kind of game so that someone gets desperate and eventually I get to play Keyboard Hero, or Rock Band (now with keyboard).
Well... they did make Guitarmania and Drumania, so... maybe they'll be good. It's not like they don't have experience with the genre.
it has 40 songs all covers no less, song overlap with other games, and its not even Konami developing it its Zoë Mode who made
Dancing With The Starsâ„¢
Crushâ„¢
EyeToy® Play Astro Zoo
EyeToy® Play Sports
SingStar™ (for PlayStation® 2, in Collaboration with Sony London Studio)
and you cant deny its fucked up for a company who touts Singstar as a developed title and doesn't have Vocals in any version except the ds version.
I will say that a 6pad+kick drum kit is awesome but just like GH4 I'm not buying another fucking drum peripheral (much less another fucking guitar) if it doesn't support the competitors. I'm not stupid.

This actually could have been a cool opportunity for Konami to give Beatmania/IIDX a second lease on life in the West by going with a keyboard/turntable angle—instead, they're going to look like a third-rate Rock Band/Guitar Hero ripoff, which is Diagram 1.5 in the Irony Textbook.
And man, I love System of a Down, but I don't even want to think about what a cover of Chop Suey is going to sound like.

Hmmmm, nope no more money to invest into plastic instruments. Having different games in the genre is fine. However having to bounce from X company's BS instruments is not. I'm already burned out of the genre and it's not even that old.
Yeah, looking at the video, it seems like they just gave their standard notechart a GH/RB paint-job. More intuitive than the old one that looked just like beatmanias, but terrible compared to GH and RB.
And the drum charts, even on that easy difficulty, have very close-but-offset notes next to each other. Looks like they want to be really, really anal about timing.
But this drumset has six pads and a foot pedal. The GH4 drumset has three pads, two cymbal pads and a pedal, and the RB set has four pads and a pedal. :x This is just as much of a screwup in the marketplace as different models of game consoles; I think too much confusion is just going to leave people frustrated and ultimately sink everyone's boats.
And it's just sad that Konami's game doesn't have vocals in it. I'll be curious to see if they spin it as anything other than "We don't want to stop people from buying Karaoke Revolution, now do we?"

Having played Drummania and Guitar Freaks, I can safely say that Konami's versions just aren't as fun as Harmonix's, even though they did it first. (Though Drummania is admittedly way more complex.)
And the covers are no surprise. All the recent DDR mixes are buried in awful, awful covers. It's practically Konami's specialty.
Credit given for trying to jump start what they innovated, but this isn't the way to do it
It wasn't even developed by the Bemani team? Way to epic fail.
System of a Down almost sold me on this, until I saw 'cover'.

Serj's voice can't be mimicked. Good luck trying.
Serj sounds just like Will Ferrell. Just get him. (That's why I never could take the band seriously, I keep imagining Will singing the songs and leaping around like an idiot.)
Ok, next generation sony, microsoft, and nintendo all need to make official peripherals for this shit and just tell everyone to play nice with those so that all can be happy and we can buy then all.
He sounds about as enthused with the project as most of us are.
I'm trying very, very hard not to be massively cynical about this game, but it's not working very well. Six months ago I would have told anyone that there's plenty of room in the marketplace for both Guitar Hero (as a focused shredding experience) and Rock Band (as the all-encompassing rock legend). Now everyone is trying to do everything and we have a third game that looks to bring really nothing new aside from another set of equipment to buy.
“Rock Revolution” does do a couple of cool new things that “Rock Band” doesn’t. One, there’s no penalty for freestyling extra hits on the drums. I’m not a drummer, but even I feel a little constrained by “Rock Band” penalizing me for improvising during a song.
Two, Konami’s take lets you turn off the kick pedal. My girlfriend stopped trying to play “Rock Band’”s drums because the kick pedal was too much for her. “Rock Revolution” features five difficulty levels and doesn’t introduce the kick pedal until hopping into medium.
There’s also a guitar, but I didn’t have a chance to try it out. It doesn’t look much different from the stock guitar included in “Guitar Hero III: Legends of Rock,” and there’s nothing differentiating it from the guitar in “Rock Band” or “Guitar Hero,” except that it’s a different color (all black). There are five buttons, but they’ve been assigned brand-new colors.
The interface is about what you’d expect from a Konami Bemani game, except the traditional animated backgrounds have been replaced with a full-fledged rock show. It’s a little odd at first, actually; I’ve become so accustomed to the slanted nature of both “Rock Band” and “Guitar Hero” that following the notes in Rock Revolution was distracting.
It's like the people designing some of these "me-too" peripherals have never actually played the instruments they're mimicking.
You put the hi-hat pad on the left and the snare drum pad on the right, and you expect people to cross their arms over, but you put both the pads at equal height?
I can see what they're going for: The circular pads are the snare and toms and the triangular ones are the cymbals. It's still pretty doofy looking, though. With Rock Band, the pads are huge and easy to differentiate because they're just left to right. The GH4 drums are kind of funky, but at least the cymbals are way higher and between pads so you can kind of differentiate. These are just plain weird.
I'm calling it right now: This game wii still be better than RB Wii.
Yes, even the Wii version of this game.
You did see the part where there's no DLC, online play or even drum and guitar peripherals for the Wii version of this game, right? Air-strumming and air-drumming only.

What?
How the hell is that supposed to work?
Yeah. I'm wondering where the "more like their real counterparts" is being taken from. If this is more realistic, I'm starting to wonder what they thing drums actually look like.

Anyways, everyone jumping on the "Rock Band"wagon is eerily reminiscent of the 90's era fighting game craze. The cream will always rises to the top.
...and by cream, I mean Harmonix.

I assume you've downloaded his stuff on Rockband?

Oh good lord yes. Makes me think of the godawful Rage Against the Machine cover in Guitar Hero II.
Heck no, I won't do what you tell me!
Agreed; except I don't own Rock Band or the appropriate system. That's awesome to hear, though; his solo work, I'm guessing?
yea thats going to work out well

EDIT:
And the Drumania kit had five pads plus the kit, for the record. So bemani had always had 'one-up' on Rock Band, so to speak.

I should know, I've played RB for the PS2.
