How the HELL do you kill the 2 Abobos that smash through the cliff face in mission 3? I've only done it once by luck. I can go the entire time before that now without dying, and they just deplete all my lives. I saw a video of a guy using the Elbow Punch, but I can't seem to get it to really work for me (I have learned it by that point, though). The one time I did beat them, it was on my last life, and the cave with the falling spikes owned me after that, so any tips there would be welcome, too.
Basically, is there some trick to beating them? Something I'm missing? Thanks in advance.
Oh, one more thing, any way to earn more than the 3 lives you have?

Just elbow punch the shit out of them. It was easier in the arcade version (I could get through the whole game on one credit just elbow punching everyone) but it's pretty reliable on the NES too if you can get the timing just right. The jump kick works sometimes, but sometimes they duck it. Elbow punch...sorry that is the only way.
