So I've had my HDTV for a good year and a half now, and outside of my 360 and PS3, I don't have anything that really takes advantage of it. I have a few bluray movies, mainly chosen from the get 5 free deal, along with Blazing Saddles and The Terminator (which is a terrible transfer), but nothing that really wows me.
The patriot is the best bluray movie I own. It looks noticeably improved, but I want something more. I already plan on getting Planet Earth, and I know the pirate movies are supposed to be phenomenal, but I'm not too sure what else is out there.
Blade runner has a very, very nice transfer. Detail and quality wise its probably the best Bluray i've seen, that being said it is rather old so the special effects and whatnot probably won't wow you, nor add sparkle. For more recent stuff I Am Legend and 30 Days of Night both look very good. I've heard the Harry Potter movies also look very good and have great special effects, but they aren't exactly my thing and I haven't seen any of them personally
Yeah, thats another point - I'd like a movie I would enjoy. I'm not a big harry potter fan so no deal on those, but I'll pick up I am Legend and 30 Days of Night.
I have enjoyed 300, Live Free or Die Hard, and Casino Royale. All extremely pretty on Blu-Ray if you like the type of movies they are. I've tried some of the other transfers out there and so far, they haven't really blown me away except movies being widescreen on my widescreen.
I hear that computer generated movies are the way to go for Blu-Ray because they can just re-render the movie to the higher resolution. Happy feet in particular was recommended to me. Strange I know, but it might work.

300 was fantastic on blu ray. I suggest it highly.
I highly recommend anything thats animated and more specifically anything by Disney and Pixar. Ratatouille, Cars, Meet the Robinsons, Chicken Little, and Open Season all have extremely good PQ as does TMNT. Other movies such as any of the Pirates of the Caribbean, I Robot, and Live Free and Die Hard also have good PQ. For a more exhaustive list I recommend looking at the AVS Forum PQ Thread.
As a side note, if your one of those people who doesn't like grain you may hate certain movies such as 300.

Reservoir Dogs is a great Transfer. My brother and I are waiting for the 15th anniversary version before buying.
As someone else suggested Pixar, especially Cars. I have the Blu-ray Die hard box set and it's pretty good. Troy (Director's Cut) was also worth a rent.

I suppose I could go buying some now and watch them on my 22" monitor, but it's just not the same as a big 1080p hdtv.

I've got a spare copy of Portal, if anyone wants it message me.

And I'll second Die Hard. It was fun.
it's not an awful transfer, necessarily, it's jut not all that great. It just looks like a cleaned up copy.
I imagine that when they invariably release a Terminator Bluray boxset, they'll do a higher quality transfer.
Also, I couldn't stand 300.
