This is a great thread, but I only recognise about half of the unlabelled screens. Could you please label them, as they look lovely, and I'm feeling all retro recently and might get some of them.
If my computer could actually get it to look like that, I'd probably be a little angry that Valve hasn't released the graphically updated version of HL2 and Ep1 for PC.

The most beautiful image I can remember while playing a game is from Beyond Good and Evil. It was near the start, when you have to go out and take pictures of the animals to get money. I was looking out over the cliff onto the horizon and a whale jumps out of the water in an arc leaving a trail of water going behind it. It was possible the most beautiful image that I've seen in a game, and it literally made me stop playing just to appreciate it.
Why the hell would Valve re-release graphically updated versions of HL2 and Ep1? That's such a waste of gorram time, they look and play fine as it is.
iirc it's because the 360 versions got an update during the orange box development, they said they would release a graphical pack for the PC, too.
Other proposed changes by Valve would be retroactively adding achievements to HL2 / Ep 1. Of course, the time when this change is supposed to drop is (adjusted for Valve time) approximately five minutes after the sun dies.
It's strange, the screenshots you take specifically because you thought something looked really good, don't always end up looking the best. I thought Lotro had pretty graphics, but a lot of my SS's ended up pretty ugly. Same thing with Stalker.
Can most of you actually post what game you're getting these images from? It is tough to know when I don't own every console, and don't pay attention to everything just because.
I can understand that you can't appreciate the game if you don't like the Bioware formula, but really the graphics were quite nice. Sure, it doesn't compare to some of the stuff in this thread, but I felt it deserved a spot here.
Man, I wanted to find it and then post it so anyone who hadn't seen it would be all like "Wow!", but I can't even remember the name. It was a PSX RPG that had killer watercolour style hand drawn backgrounds. I thought it was published by Square, but I looked through their list of games and couldn't find it, so can anyone name it?
Saga Frontier?
Say what you will about the game, but it is very pretty.
No, it wasn't Saga Frontier. The backgrounds actually looked like watercolour paintings, as far as I can remember. Like they had that paint on paper look.
OK, turns out it WAS Saga Frontier, but I only looked at Saga Frontier 1 and it was Saga Frontier 2 that I was thinking of. Check this shit out:
I didn't see Majora's Mask mentioned. I really liked the change in art direction from OoT to Majora's Mask. Generic fantasy versus alternate reality being attacked by the moon. Awesome.

Salmon'd for snideness!
But no, it's just not a nice-looking game and never was. It has a horrible art direction >_<
Aren't most of them labelled? I didn't label Product No. 3 (Capcom, GC)... but I think most are. Or are instantly recognizable.
What are you wanting to be a-knowing?
This one:
Though the website did take me to the right place, there were a few others on the first few pages with no label, and it seems that while they are mainstream, I'm just too much in a cave.

Oh it's such a nice day, I think I'll go out the window! Whoa!

Fuck you people and your nice computers!
Is... is that Loom?
At the time, Skies of Arcadia was visually staggering. Its a shame its so old there are so few decent captures or screenshots to post.

Still:
American McGee's Alice
Dungeons & Dragons Online
Knights of the Old Republic
Trackmania Nations Forever
I guess the correlation is that when a developer pays attention to graphical details he will do the same with gameplay details.
*edit: okay, so all of those look better in motion. :P Anyway.
And a bad game.

I suppose you should keep in mind this game is almost 20 years old
the backgrounds still look fantastic

So good.
World of Illusion was superior, of course, and Mickey Mania.
You know David Jaffe was one of the top men on Mickey Mania.
World of Illusion though was the best co-op game ever made for the better part of two decades.
I'd go and grab some kick-ass high-res screens from the PC version right now, but I don't have the disk with me.
Even more conspicuous in its absence - Yoshi's Island:

The clouds... so confusing...
Oh and what about that limbo game? Is it coming out or not?
Yes thank you. I totally agree with this. I never saw the appeal of psychonauts. The fugly art style just kills the game for me.
I never asked for this!
Loco Roco is just so... bouncy.
I bought it on Xbox Originals and gave it a fair shot, but I couldn't get over it. It distracted me so much.
