Seriously. I need something to try out. Free is always the best option. In fact, its really the only option. Something with modding support would be nice to pour some of my creative energy into.

Ive done most of the old mainstream ones that are now abandonware, so point me into the new generation!

Castle of the Winds is good, but you're limited to editing graphics with a resource editor. Cave Story isn't "old", but it is styled after older games.

And the map/script editor can be found in the links section ("Sue's Workshop").

Your post is confusing. Do you want something olde or something in the new generation? Most modern RPGs have mod support.

New: The Witcher. Made of shiny gold, precious gems, and pure awesome.

Less new: Arx Fatalis. It's on Steam, I believe.

Soddin' old: Darklands, Ultima Underworld 1 & 2.

Ancient: Demon's Winter, Shard of Spring, and Questron 2. For when you want to punish your eyeballs.
